Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata has been fined $15,000 by the NFL for his hit Sunday night on Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, several outlets are reporting.

The play in question happened with 8:22 remaining in the second quarter and Baltimore leading New York, 20-7. Sanchez dropped back to pass and as he was about to throw the ball, Ngata blasted him from his blind side, causing a fumble that was scooped up by Ravens linebacker Jarret Johnson and returned for a touchdown.

Referee Mike Carey didn't throw a flag on the play but the NFL, after reviewing the tape, clearly feels differently. The league fined Ngata for roughing the passer. "Specifically, on a pass play, he lowered his head and struck the opposing quarterback,” AFC information manager Corry Rush told PFT.

"I thought Haloti actually hit him in the back with his helmet first, but that being said, he made a great play," Jets head coach Rex Ryan said.

You can judge for yourself below:

Earlier this week Ngata told Dan Patrick that "I love hitting Tom Brady because he always complains. He thinks he should never be touched," When asked if the officials listen to Brady and throw the flag, Ngata said, "No. My hits are usually clean."

Except this time, at least in the eyes of the league.

What a joke the NFL has become. That was a clean legal hit. I guess they should put dresses on every QB or play 2 hand touch or play flag football. I've seen Joe Flacco take worse hits than that. Does he complain? No he gets up, dusts himself off and gets ready for the next play.

To Burgh boy, that was spoken like a true Steelers fan. You can bet your bottom dollar that every Steelers fan thinks that every Ravens player is a thug. I suppose the hit that Jarrett Johnson put on Hines Ward was wrong, Go buy Fottball for Dummies 101 and learn the way football is suppose to be played.

Goodell needs to just go away.
He's like that rich kid who brings his mom to the park because no ones "playing nice"

He's a cancer to football, defense is extinct. Or it will be soon...

The NFL is turning pathetic. Wait, it's already. Dang, time to delete all the series recordings of Nfl Live, Total Access and I'm done watching this b.s. I'll only go out of my way now days to see my team. Screw the rest.

Haloti Ngata fined $15K for hit on Mark Sanchez

it's great football by historical standards... but the modern nfl has decided that a defensive player must now learn to run full speed with his head and body vertically while the ball carriers and blitz pickup can lower their heads and deliver just as damaging blows... defensive players are at a disadvantage because if they are too effective they might hurt somebody... eventually teams will no longer invest in the defense or run game because there will be no point... it will be all about the pass and leveraging the QB protection and cheap rules that allow cheezy bubble screens into easy yardage

You can tell from the picture from behind.....his head is turned to the left.....that's not 'leading' with the head. From that angle, there is no way for the head to not make some contact!

Wow, you can't hit QBs in the helmet, you can't hit them at the knees.  Lets put belts around their waste and start playing flag football.  I've seen Flacco take some shots.  He took one last year against the Jets.
