On Thursday, ESPN fired Hank Williams Jr. as the guy who sings the Monday Night Football intro. And this Monday, for the first time since 1989, someone else will rhetorically ask us if "We're ready for some football."

CBSSports.com's Will Brinson went through the painstaking effort of listing 10 acts who might replace Williams, although it appears that ESPN will be going in a different, less musical direction, at least for the rest of the 2011 season.

Minutes before Monday night's Bears-Lions game, former Lions great and Hall of Famer Barry Sanders will narrate the introduction.

Sanders spilled the beans on Twitter Thursday. As for future MNF games, ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said that "This is the format we'll likely use the remainder of the season. We haven't made any decisions beyond that."

As long-suffering Lions fan and PFT.com contributor Michael David Smith wrote earlier Friday, "Regardless of what you think of Williams’ comments and ESPN’s response to those comments, we can all agree on this: There’s no one better than Barry Sanders to welcome America to football in Detroit."

The Detroit Lions haven't hosted a Monday night game in a decade. Will their return to Monday night end in a victory over the Bears? NFL.com's Pat Kirwan joins Jason Horowitz to preview this NFC North showdown.

Dolfandave, you're better than that.  Sanders quit because it wasn't fun losing anymore.  And the team wasn't going to do what was neccesary to make the team better.  That's what it was like for Payton for the first 8 seasons, but then they hired Ditka, and things turned around.  The Lions had clowns like Wayne Fontes coaching the team.  Sanders didn't owe Detroit anything.  He gave them 10 amazing seasons, so he was hardly in his prime (it probably just seemed that way because of the guady numbers he put up every year).  I think it's a great idea for MNF to use an old legend each week to introduce the game.  I hope they roll with it.

I don't really care what the dude said. Probably a big deal made over nothing.

But I for one have always hated that stupid intro. I always either mute the tv or pause the game before that part so I can speed through it.

t1anda, Obama has something your party doesn't and that's called likability.  Look at the polls, it says that even though people may not agree with some of his decisions they will still vote for him.  Good luck trying to find a likable Repub. or whatever party your with.

Barry Sanders...What a class act he was on the field. I think he will be an excellent replacement for the guy who made the mistake and said the wrong things. I don't think Williams intended it to come out as,or to be interpreted as a slam against our president. It was intended for entertainment but so many people take things personal with everything that is said. Back to Sanders...He left the game because Lions management did not put him in a situation to win except for his own efforts. He had no line, no QB leader, No other offensive weapons except Herman Moore, no defense, and poor coaches. What Barry had done in games was nothing short of spectacular. He could have broken Jim Browns record by a large margin but didn't out of respect for Jim Brown. If you ever saw him play, He was amazing. Did everything with class. He would make great runs and touchdowns, then hand the football respectfully to the referees without childish ball slams, dances, or other celebrative moves or actions. No one has ever done that except him. He was the most talented running back with more class on and off the field than any other player ever. If you do not agree with this, then you never saw him play. I will honor his presence on MNF and hope they show some of his game clips.
