On Thursday, ESPN fired Hank Williams Jr. as the guy who sings the Monday Night Football intro. And this Monday, for the first time since 1989, someone else will rhetorically ask us if "We're ready for some football."

CBSSports.com's Will Brinson went through the painstaking effort of listing 10 acts who might replace Williams, although it appears that ESPN will be going in a different, less musical direction, at least for the rest of the 2011 season.

Minutes before Monday night's Bears-Lions game, former Lions great and Hall of Famer Barry Sanders will narrate the introduction.

Sanders spilled the beans on Twitter Thursday. As for future MNF games, ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said that "This is the format we'll likely use the remainder of the season. We haven't made any decisions beyond that."

As long-suffering Lions fan and PFT.com contributor Michael David Smith wrote earlier Friday, "Regardless of what you think of Williams’ comments and ESPN’s response to those comments, we can all agree on this: There’s no one better than Barry Sanders to welcome America to football in Detroit."

The Detroit Lions haven't hosted a Monday night game in a decade. Will their return to Monday night end in a victory over the Bears? NFL.com's Pat Kirwan joins Jason Horowitz to preview this NFC North showdown.

I hope the hillbillie sues espn for all his lost income over his freedom of speech.  This is america still right.  I mean we didnt lose some war to the F N mexicans did we?
America didn't infringe on his freedom of speech.  ESPN, which is a private organization, fired him within their rights.  I really wish some of you yokels that belly-ache about your "freedoms" would take a government class or two so you can understand exactly what your "rights" apply to.  The first amendement protects you from GOVERNMENT INFRINGEMENT on your freedom of speech.  That's not the case here.

I honestly can understand why ESPN did what they did.  Maybe if HWJ had chuckled after he said it, it may have blown over.  But he looked like a big, fat, dirty hillbilly spewing hate speech when he said it.  Go back and watch the clip again.  I half-expected barbecue sauce and chicken bones to come flying out of his mouth while he was talking.

ame the Lions who should be on the list before Barry Sanders.  He retired because the Lions are a crap franchise who were not committed to winneg.  He had all the money he needed and didnt want to take the abuse anymore for nothing more than financial gain.  He knew there would be no chmpionship in Detroit and if you're not playing for that what are you playing for?

Should have been another Lion player who didn't quit on the team just before the season started. There are more deserving past Lions who put more heart and soul into this team and organization than Barry did.

Barry quit on Detroit because they never committed to him as they should have.  They would spend draft picks/free agents on defensive lineman, linebackers and secondary.  That had to seem like a slap in the face.  The man was taking abuse game in and game out and if he did not get out of there, he would have never been able to enjoy any sort of retirement.  Picking up a decent QB or some lineman would have went a long way for those teams.

I am not a Lions fan but I always held Barry in highest regards.  He was a great running back who walked away while he could.  Keeping the signing bonus is a whole different thing that didn't happen anyway and never tarnished his image with me.
