Money not reason Garrard didn't sign with Miami

It wasn't about money for Garrard, but that the Dolphins were 0-4. (US PRESSWIRE)

Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne played surprisingly well through the first four weeks of the season. Unfortunately, the shoulder injury he suffered against the Chargers Sunday will keep him out for the rest of the year. Which meant that Miami was in the market for a backup quarterback behind newly elevated starter Matt Moore.

The team reached out to NFL veterans David Garrard and Jake Delhomme earlier this week and were told "thanks but no thanks" by both.

The Dolphins finally settled on Sage Rosenfels. Conventional wisdom (based on what Garrard's agent had told multiple outlets) was that Miami wasn't offering Garrard enough to get off his couch. Turns out, it wasn't about the money.

Details via the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero:
I am hearing from multiple team sources that, in fact, the reason Garrard is not on the Dolphins today has nothing to do with money. I'm told that if Garrard wanted his base salary guaranteed, the Dolphins would have done that. I'm told that although reports are Garrard would have played for $1 million, the club might have gone to three times that amount and "probably" paid it.

I'm told that the reason the Dolphins didn't get Garrard is, in fact, because he simply didn't feel like playing right now. Garrard apparently talked to the team and showed no great desire to play. He is, according to this version of the story, quite content sitting out this season, spending time with his family, and hitting free agency next March.
Salguero writes that this account makes more sense than the version previously being pushed -- namely, that the Dolphins were too cheap to pay Garrard, which could be interpreted as the organization giving up on the season after a month.

And while Garrard wanting to spend more time with his family is admirable, there's still more to the story.

"Garrard sure enough wasn't all that enthusiastic about playing right now -- but mostly because the team that came calling has such little chance of winning as the 0-4 Dolphins do," Salguero explains. "If, say, the 3-1 New England Patriots suddenly lost Tom Brady and needed a starting QB, he'd be on a plane in a heartbeat."

So the Dolphins settled on Rosenfels who, according to coach Tony Sparano will serve as Moore's backup. “Yeah, it’s Matt’s job," Sparano said. "We’ve got to get Matt ready to go."

In case you're wondering, Miami also worked out Kellen Clemens, JP Losman, Jim Sorgi, and Charlie Frye before settling on to Rosenfels.

Money not reason Garrard didn't sign with Miami

I agree with you on him getting a unfair shake in Jax David.  He was the scapegoat for a horribly ran system.  I'm not sure anyone could of been successful at Jax over that period of time.  Sadly no matter how much tape teams watch of him.  No matter how good they think he actually was over the course of his career in Jax.  At end of day the w/l still sticks out more then anything.  Like someone else has allready mentioned.  If he think's he is going to get a call next year for a starting job he's fooling himself, and might as well officialy retire.

Then Garrard is retired.  What an idiot he may prove to be if next year he expects a phone call. But its his call.

Sage Rosenfels has previously been at the fins so will be a good fit.  I just cannot believe that the list above all did not want to play - so much for the "love of the game" spiel players give.  Clemens and Sorgi have never had a chance to be starter - with only Moore ahead of them this may have been their best chance.

I can't say I blame David Garrard for not playing on an 0-4 Dolphins team. It sure makes a lot of sense to me. He was going to get beat up a lot, but he sure would have loved throwing the ball to Brandon Marshall and Devon Bess. Hey, his family was very important and I have no argument with that.

The Patriots? That's a joke, right? Ryan Mallett would play before Garrard would get the call.

I don't blame Garrard. He was humiliated by the Jags after being paraded around as the starter. He was blamed for all the faults on offense. The receivers are horrible on the Jags.  As far as the Dolphins, they are 0-4. He would have just taken a beating for nothing. No way they are going to reach the playoffs in that division. If there is a glimmer of hope to reach the playoffs, I wonder what his answer would be.  And no, he is not a lazy spoon, whatever that means.
The simple fact that the Jags are tanking the season just goes to show the problem was not him. The receivers can't seem to catch Gabbert's balls either.

He's what 38-39 or something like that overall w/l?  Do you really wanna start him in a 0-4 hole with that kind of record?

I like David Garrard, he's a good quarterback.  I think that he would have played well this season if he stayed with the Jags.  I'm sure he'll be back in some capacity next season.

Stop being such a hater. This man obviously has enough financial stability to enjoy his family without HAVING to go to work. I would say every man in America would love to be in that position. The man is paid what he's worth. A career as an NFL starting qb is very elite, and he's paid accordingly. Sorry to burst your bubble but career wise, he's better than you. He's getting paid well to do something he loves. So stop being bitter.

Another example of overpaid athletes..A man that will retire before forty turning down a job after being let go..There are thousands of unemployed people in the real world working multiple jobs just to make ends meet that never see their families and cant afford to go to a game, and this washed up QB can afford to sit back and wait for a better situation.
