Vick: Blame players, not Andy Reid

While we talk about the disappointing start by the Eagles this season, fans and observers have taken to trying to cast the blame about why this season has gone so spectacularly wrong.

Is it new defensive coordinator Juan Castillo -- the former offensive line coach whose defense, well, stinks? Is it Michael Vick’s fault? What about the big-name free agent acquisitions, like Nnamdi Asomugha, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Jason Babin? Is there any way to cast the blame on Donovan McNabb?

And what about, ahem, coach Andy Reid, who was one of the main architects of the roster that, so far, has been disastrous? In Michael Vick’s eyes, that would be a big no.

"We're going to fight for him every minute," Vick said, via the Philadelphia Inquirer. "It’s not Coach Reid's fault. Coach can’t go out and hold onto the ball, coach can’t throw the ball down the field. Coach can’t go out there and do it, he can only give us what we need -- the recipe for victory, and that’s what we’re getting.

Philly cheese struggle
"It’s the little things that’s killing the game. It’s not on Coach. I know the game of football and I’ve been around the game for a long time and I know the intricacies and the ins and outs, and it’s not coach. Bottom line. Put the heat on the players, you can put it on us. Don’t put it on him."

Perhaps to make that point further, receiver Jason Avant -- whose sloppy play was one key component of Philadelphia’s loss to the Bills last Sunday -- called a players-only meeting Wednesday. Vick wouldn’t reveal what Avant had to say, but it’s clear that one of the memes to emerge was to support the ol’ ball coach.

"That hurts all of us," Vick said. "That's our coach and he's one of the best in the business, and that's the bottom line. You look at what we've been able to do from an offensive standpoint, you look at how guys respond, but Coach Reid can't go out there and hold onto the ball for us, Coach Reid can't go out there and make the throws I need to make."

That's true, but if Philadelphia keeps playing this way, who's the easier target to fire? Reid or the 53 players who are making him look bad?

Vick: Blame players, not Andy Reid

The reason the Eagles are not jellen? Maybe! most of the team are family guys and have DOGS they love and think of as one of the family. I don't know about how Vick feels, I believe everyone deserves a 2 or 3  or whatever chance. I know for a fact that if I was playing for the Eagles and went home saw the kids and the mutt I would think to myself I'm a lucky man thats never hurt anything intentionly or undeserved and now I have to block, catch a pass feel good about this guy. I don't think so. USE the back up quarter back send Mike home , get some team... oohrahh

It's the defense and the fact that they don't have a defensive coordinator that can successfully implement a system that works.  When Johnson was there, they had complicated schemes and always did two things; confused the opposing QBs and forced turnovers.  Watching their games this year, they look pretty vanilla, in terms of blitz packages with linebackers.  They have the personel to do it!
I also don't get why, with their cornerbacks, they don't play more man coverage. Aso would be WAY better suited to just play man on one side and take away that side of the field (like he did in Oakland).  This would leave Rogers-Cromartie and Samuel getting thrown at and trying to make plays on the ball.  They have both always been risk takers (getting burned a bunch but also geting picks).

Seriously? How do you have the owner open up the check book and on paper make a good team better, and have them come out and perform like they have no clue what to do without blaming the coaches. The "Dream Team" is only going to be as good as its weakest link. You guessed it, THE COACHING STAFF! And the General of that staff is Andy Reid. Now I know he can't go out there and play himself, but adjustments to what is being done is where the coaches come in. THe fans in Philly have had a problem with Andy Reid for a while and now when you supposedly make a good team better and they completely SUCK, there is no better time than the present to make an "adjustment", get Andy off the sidelines and that defensive coordinator too. I don't know what you are paying him Jeff but it is way too much.

Why fire anyone?  It's always off with their heads with you crazy's!  I'm no Vick fan but I am impressed with how he has got his coaches back.

how many weeks is andy reid gonna say this is totally my fault...blah blah blah. the clock management at the end of halfs has been atrocias, the offense turns the ball over way to much, and the worst problem they have is the defense cant even tackle my grandma! and what bout the dumb penalty at the end of the game? all of this comes back to coaching and completly disagree w/ mr josh katzowitz. andy reid is a stand up guy but things are spiroling out of control. at some point u gotta hold em accountable. i like the eagles and bought a ticket to the rams/eagles game week 1 bc i wanted to see vick,d-jax, mccoy, and hometown hero jeremy maclin. its really sad whats happening to the eagles this season and i root for them to turn it around, but i have serious doubt this team will make the playoffs.

"Michael Vick is turning into a stand-up guy.  Maybe it's the Tony Dungy influence, but whatever it is, Vick is turning into a guy who "gets it."  I can see him getting to the Super Bowl someday."

Oh yea, like the way he was crying his little eyes out, after the Giants game, talking about how he NEVER get the calls by the officals... Oh Boo, Hoo-Hoo. I do admit, there in Philadelphia, you can blame the players on this one... They ALL thought they had the Superbowl won, before the Pre-season even started. I too can see that ex-con going to the Superbowl someday... He certainly has enough money to buy himself a ticket, but that`s about the ONLY way I see him going.

Vick: Blame players, not Andy Reid

Surprised Vick Isn't blaming the Pit Bulls. Lol

I'm not sure how this is funny, could be funny, or was even perceived as funny by you.  Rather lame way to try and tie in the dog fighting scandal with something that has nothing to do with dogs.

I just see no tie in to humor with this other than the need for attention that is screaming from it.

i think that i will blame this guy castillo, the defensive coordinator. how can you put a great offensive line coach as the defenseive coordinator the following year??? do they realize that he works on the offensive side of the ball? the eagles defense has been downright terrible. they have no tackling and their linebackers couldnt cover a sandwich. the eagels need to utilize their great secondary by letting their corners go one on one more often and try to put some pressure on the qb. their linebackers cant play zone coverage, so just match them up with a rb/fb or blitz them. i blame the defense and offensive line for the eagles' trouble. primarily the playcalling of DC castillo

I don't understand why Andy Reid has been getting a free pass all these years. Is he blackmailing the Eagles owner? The Eagles playcalling has been questionable for a long time and especially in the playoffs. As mentioned before in another post, why is their playcalling in some games 80% passing and 20% rushing plays? Why are they playing a zone defense with 3 pro bowl quality cornerbacks? All 3 cbs became garbage overnight? Obviously the defensive schemes are not working at all. So many times have the Eagles flopped in the playoffs yet everybody always wanted to blame MacNabb. Time for Andy Reid to get a big part of the blame for why the Eagles choke every time they are labeled Super Bowl favorites. Yes the players deserve a part of the blame but so does Andy Reid.
