Roman Harper fined $15K for shot on Steve Smith

Last Sunday, Roman Harper of the Saints laid what I thought was one of the cheapest shots I've seen in a while on Panthers wide receiver. In a nutshell, Harper tackled a defenseless Smith in the end zone after Smith scored, because he was mad Smith walked into the end zone on a long touchdown.

For his actions, Harper was fined $15,000 by the NFL on Thursday. Which, frankly, seems a little low, especially considering how unapologetic Harper was.

"I just was like, 'You’re not going to walk and showboat in our end zone like that,'" Harper said. "I just lost it, and maybe I shouldn’t have hit him but I did. I’m not going to apologize for what I did."

Does Harper even realize the game was played in Carolina?

Whatever, the result of Harper's hit was Smith trying to figure out exactly what happened, then spinning the ball even harder than he usually does, and then a near fight between a bunch of players in the game. No one was ejected.

Presumably, Harper's being fined for a "late hit," which is actually only a $7,500 minimum for first-time violators. $15,000 is the amount players are fined for the second violation, but it seems more likely that the NFL cranked up the amount of his fine based on the flagrant nature of what he did.

And it still wasn't enough for the absolutely unnecessary cheap shot he got on Smith.

Roman Harper fined $15K for shot on Steve Smith

The individual Smith had by the facemask was Malcolm Jenkins, not Roman Harper.

How was that not a suspendable hit? By not suspending him, the NFL just sets a bad precedent when the next person does this and knocks the guy out.

All I know is Steve Smith is one mean Mother #$%! er!   I would think twice before attempting to get into this man's grill afgter the way he tossed Harper to the ground like a rag doll and then picked him back up by the face mask to emphasis his distane.  Classic! Reminds me of Lyle Alzado back in the day when he was the most intense and intimidateing player in the NFL... RIP Lyle.

Yes, looking back at the video highlights, there is no taunting by Smith evident during the play:

Harper wasn't even in a position to have a shot at making a tackle.  Smith and Greer went for a jump ball, Smith came down with it, and emerged clear enough of defenders so that running at 3/4 speed was sufficient to score.

Again, Harper is at fault, and should have done a better job of keeping his emotions in check.

I see nothing further to debate.

as a football player/coach I see this differently - Next time try OPENING your eyes....

1- Smith did taunt Harper - WHEN? He didnt even see him... how can you taunt someone you dont see?

2- Harper was NOT the corner man that was beat, in fact nobody was beat, nice catch DB falls down - Smith stiffarmed the DB, then ran..

3- Harper let smith know, score that's fine, taunt and get hit - He let him know what? That Haprper is a late hitting moron? Thats the only thing learned by Smith, and anyone else watching the game... that Harper will go for a cheap shot..

4- Harper did NOT launch and hit smith, he hit him high AND made a point (sort of like a high inside pitch in BB) - He hit him high and LATE, and 4 yards into the endzone. Yeah he made a point...that he is a cheapshot artist..

5- Smith did go after Harper, but waited til his posse got there (who's the puss..) - Actually, wrong again.. Smith got up, celebrated his TD, then went after Harper... and treated Harper like he was a rag doll.... that was the best part of the whole thing...

6- You grab my facemask you will get broken in half. - So cheapshotting someone from their blind side is OK.. but grabbing your facemask isn't? Puuhhleeease...

Harper deserved a suspension for that hit. Not only was it late, but it was high and from the blind side of the receiver. Smith never showboated, never taunted anyone.. he looked behind him and saw he couldn't be caught, so he slowed down.. like just about every other WR/RB in the league. Is Harper now going to cheap shot everyone that slows down entering the end zone? If so he will be pretty busy...

Harper must maintain composure, if not for his own benefit, for the benefit of the team.  I empathize with his frustration on the play, but that's football.  As for Smith, let him have his antics and ignore him.  All that nonsense just added up to another game in the 'L' column in the end.

LSUTiger1978, considering you're not a die-hard saints fan, you sure saw that play through superdome style lenses.
-----------------------------------

--------------
1- Smith did taunt Harper
2- Harper was NOT the corner man that was beat, in fact nobody was beat, nice catch DB falls down
3- Harper let smith know, score that's fine, taunt and get hit
4- Harper did NOT launch and hit smith, he hit him high AND made a point (sort of like a high inside pitch in BB)
5- Smith did go after Harper, but waited til his posse got there (who's the puss..)
6- You grab my facemask you will get broken in half.

1- at what time marker in the video, did smith taunt harper? besides spinning the football. smith knew the db covering him when the ball thrown was no longer there and harper was 5-10 yards away and thats why he decided to walk into the end zone.
2 - the cover db fell down only on the landing.  he was up in the air with smith, but the db just flat out failed, then fell.
3 - harper hit smith because the secondary got humiliated on that play. period.
4 - the fine wasn't levied due to a "launch"-type of hit.  it was LATE!  really late. a good 2 seconds late.
5- smith finished his business of spinning the ball before he let harper know the hit wasn't cool.  smith could take harper. no doubt.
6 - who got broken in half?  is that what you would've done, big tough guy behind the computer screen? aaaaaahaha!

i'm just glad you're NOT a die-hard saints fan.  otherwise, who knows what kind of tripe you would've spewed?  thanks for the comedy!

It's good to see someone get fined for this. It seems as if scoring a touchdown entities the defense to take a shot at you. When a guy runs into the endzone, the goal line is much like a sideline in that crossing it kills the play.

If you don't want someone showboating in your endzone, don't let them score.
