Roman Harper fined $15K for shot on Steve Smith

Last Sunday, Roman Harper of the Saints laid what I thought was one of the cheapest shots I've seen in a while on Panthers wide receiver. In a nutshell, Harper tackled a defenseless Smith in the end zone after Smith scored, because he was mad Smith walked into the end zone on a long touchdown.

For his actions, Harper was fined $15,000 by the NFL on Thursday. Which, frankly, seems a little low, especially considering how unapologetic Harper was.

"I just was like, 'You’re not going to walk and showboat in our end zone like that,'" Harper said. "I just lost it, and maybe I shouldn’t have hit him but I did. I’m not going to apologize for what I did."

Does Harper even realize the game was played in Carolina?

Whatever, the result of Harper's hit was Smith trying to figure out exactly what happened, then spinning the ball even harder than he usually does, and then a near fight between a bunch of players in the game. No one was ejected.

Presumably, Harper's being fined for a "late hit," which is actually only a $7,500 minimum for first-time violators. $15,000 is the amount players are fined for the second violation, but it seems more likely that the NFL cranked up the amount of his fine based on the flagrant nature of what he did.

And it still wasn't enough for the absolutely unnecessary cheap shot he got on Smith.

Roman Harper fined $15K for shot on Steve Smith

No matter what anybody said about Steve Smith, whether he's cocky or arrogant, pound for pound, he's one of the best wide receivers in the NFL and most of time he can back up his talk.

I will agree that the fine should have been longer but I think the NFL should look at the problem that started it.  It was the showboating..walking into the endzone that started the whole thing.  If Steve Smith would have run hard into the endzone, celebrated and come off the field, there wouldn't be any story, no fight, no late hit and no fine.  You talk about this being Professional football, well stop the unprofessional behavior of taunting.  Don't show up the other team, just celebrate what you have done.   This reminds me of when Terrell Owens celebrated on the Dallas star and getting hit as a defenseless player by Teague.

Both players were wrong but my point is that if you get rid of the taunting, you won't have to deal with these kind of hits.  If it was baseball and a guy does something to taunt, the next guy gets hit.

So, I just rewatched the video of the hit and melee afterward.  The problem with Harper's explanation is that at no point before the late hit did Smith "walk and showboat in our end zone like that."  Smith beat the defender, ran toward the goal line, then slowed down some (not walking) when he got near the goal line - just like nearly every player that knows they can't be caught at that point.  And Smith didn't have time to showboat before getting blind-sided by Harper.

Harper obviously had decided that he was going to try sending a message - regardless of the consequences.  Unfortunately, the only message that got sent is that Harper's a pu$$y.

one more thing? what is the leagues problem only handing this tool a $15K fine? they should have fined him about $50k and suspended him on top of it. there is no room for that crap in pro football. for those of you who think its okay, its called PRO football. you know, as in PROFESSIONAL football. players should have a little more preofessionalism, class, and sportsmanship than that. i guess Harper is just another short tempered thug that would prob be homeless or in prison if it werent for athleticism.

anyone thats says Smith deserved it is a moron. is he a cocky, mouthy, showboat? he sure is, but that doesnt justify taking a cheap shot like this. everyone wants to talk about protecting or defending your endzone...well guess what? that is supposed to happen BEFORE he scores. the cheap shot didnt do anything to hurt the panthers, its only hurt the saints and made Harper look like a little bitch because he got smoked on the play then wasnt man enough to deal with it. instead, he did something that u would see in a prison football league. whats next? raping someone the second time they burn you? grow up man and have a little respect for the game.

I'm a Saints fan, and yet I see absolutely no justification for Harper's cheap shot. We all know Steve Smith is an annoying, aggravating, trash-talking pain in the butt. But all Harper accomplished was to say--"You got the better of me, did exactly what you wanted to do and caused me to act like an idiot ---and cost my team 15 yards". Next time, tackle the guy in the field of play and don't let him score. Then you don't have an issue. That kind of nonsense is NOT Saints football. They should have fined him a lot more and ejected him.

CAN'T believe all you whiners....Steve Smith showboated in a CONTACT sport, had a defender coming at him, guess what happens yoou get hit......he got hit on his side and shoulder pads, nothing head to head.....all was fine, cept for little ******** that take issue......and yes it hie football you protect 'your' endzone, doesnt matter what city it is in, idiot!!!!
Hey JEANYUSS.....he was already in the endzone. You're the one, along with "I look like I'm 50, but I'm only 28" Harper, who seems to get their panties in a bunch because they got burned on a play and the guy waltzed into the endzone. There was no way Harper could've caught him and he should've been fined $50k for that cheapshot. Saints seem to be good at hitting people after the plays are over (see: Brett Favre in Vikings vs. Saints NFC Championship game).

Every action has a consequence. If Smith hustles the play out, then all is good except for the corner that got beat. But when Smith showboats in there, he gets what he gets, especially in a division game. And I agreee, whatever endzone you are defending is yours, no matter where you are. Good for Roman Harper for having the heart and passion to play this game and to care enough to piss away $15,000 for someone mocking your team.
