Meriweather fined $25K, suspension coming?

Bears safety Brandon Meriweather's found himself on the losing end of the infamous NFL fine envelope once already this year, and now he's losing again -- Meriweather's been fined another $25,000 by the league.

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, Meriweather was tagged with the fine for a late hit last Monday in Detroit, which was flagged for unnecessary roughness.

Add that to the fact that Meriweather's been benched for Week 6's game against Minnesota, and it this probably isn't the greatest week of his life. But it could get worse -- Peter King of Sports Illustrated reported on Friday evening that Meriweather could face a suspension from the league if his on-field behavior continues.

"Unless there's a drastic change in his play, he may be invited to talk to us," NFL VP Ray Anderson told King.

King did say, however, that Anderson, who is "disturbed" by Meriweather's play, wasn't necessarily guaranteeing a suspension, but he would certainly received a warning of a suspension if he continues to draw fines for illegal hits.

Meriweather was one of the players fined heavily a year ago during "Safety Week," when the NFL levied a slew of heavy fines on a number of players for illegal hits and threatened suspension. (Meriweather was fined $50,000 which was later reduced to $40,000.)

Which makes us wonder what, exactly, an NFL defender needs to do in order to warrant a suspension. Apparently, it's going to require a serious injury sustained on a clearly illegal helmet-to-helmet hit.

Oh quit your whining.  You've started out nice, but you are still the Lions which means pretty soon they will self destruct just as they always do.  They'll be lucky to go 8 and 8.  No one cares about Detroit or the Lions, thats why people are just abandoning parts of your city.

this really isnt a surprise. Thats a reason he is gone from new england. He has a lot of raw talent but no instincts plus he is a dirty player. He never tackled anybody, went for the big hit. Thats fine when it works but when u bounce of the guy and he keeps running and ur a safety he generally is running for awhile. Also he took the worst angles i ever seen in a safety

Teres Minor - Amen.

For those who are skeptical of whether the hit was worthy of a hefty fine, it most certainly is. For starters, it was after the play was dead, and it was clearly unecessary. Not only was it very late, he went straight for the helmet. Those two factors alone clearly indicate that his intention was only to hurt Nate Burleson, not contribute to the play or to entertain the fans.

My two cents.

Ain't this the pot calling the kettle black??  This makes me happy to see....because I remember boldly all the bears fans in the preseason calling Suh a dirty player because of a hit on Dalton. Truth hurts, doesn't it?? Meriweather is one of the dirtiest players in the game today. There are others as well, but Suh is not one of them.

I am so looking forward to the message boards about the bears fans crying and whining like little bitches because their team can't cheat. Don't forget about the refs last year handing the bears the game against Detroit on a silver platter. Bears suck donkey balls....always have and always will. Cheap shots are for losers just like Meriweather. I hope he gets suspended.

Great news

For the last fifty years, the league has pretty much ignored any late hits on Detroit players.  Apparently, they thought that anyone playing on such a terrible team deserved any late hit or personal foul perpetrated upon them.  Finally, Detroit is seen as good enough to get some of these calls.  It's a sign of respect from the league and the refs.
After 50 years of William Clay Ford, Lions fans deserve this.

As a Bears fan, even I am surprised by some of the hits that Meriweather delivers. They make for great TV but totally unnecessary.

Am always skeptical with this outlandish 3rd Reich of NFL fines. This is warranted, not only money he should be suspended. The late hit on Steve Smith was nothing, this was helmet to helmet on a defenseless player who did not have a play anymore on the ball. Is BS
