Irsay: Wayne, Mathis 'trade rumors not true'

Somewhere, somehow, rumors about Reggie Wayne and Robert Mathis getting traded popped up. As Phil Wilson at the Indianapolis Star notes, the rumors aren't really rumors so much as conjecture, based on the fact that they're free agents and there was a mention that the Colts should trade both guys in order to acquire picks in the 2012 NFL Draft.

That's not an unreasonable take, but Colts owner Jim Irsay said Saturday that neither player will be heading anywhere other than Lucas Oil Stadium for their home games this year.

"No,the trade rumors aren't true," Irsay tweeted on Saturday morning. "I'm negotiating 2 buy Mars I can ensure inter-galactic,NFL dominance for the 25th century."

OK. Well at least I know I have something in the bag for Sorting the Sunday Pile, even if it lacks a clear-cut, pop-culture reference.

But back to dealing Wayne and Mathis -- it's not that likely to happen even though it probably should. (And, technically, still could.) Both guys are older than 30 and in the final year of their respective contracts. Wilson believes the Colts should extend both guys after this year; others feel differently.

Indy might not net all that much for the pair (or, more likely, if they're individually wrapped), but it seems reasonable that a contender with issues at wide receiver might be interested in Wayne. The Bills, the Titans, the Ravens, the Texans, the Chargers, the Redskins -- really anyone with a winning record would be upgraded by adding Wayne.

And Mathis could be a pass-rushing terror and/or upgrade for a number of teams -- the Jets, the Patriots, etc., -- that can't get pressure on the quarterback.

The real problem might lie in how Colts fans and players perceive the move. Yes, it would be saying "we're done in 2011" but everyone knows that, even if management steadfastly refuses to say it. (Which is totally fine -- no one should ever roll over and play dead in the NFL, at least not in Week 6.)

But maybe more importantly, it would be admitting that the Colts are in full rebuild mode, as they'd start 2012 without their top wideout and their second-best defensive player.

Provided that Peyton Manning will return next year -- something we don't know yet -- it puts Colts management in a tough spot. Can they really rebuild while he's in the final stages of his career? Manning gives them a chance to win like maybe no other player in the NFL. But at some point, the Colts do have to consider life after Manning.

Irsay: Wayne, Mathis 'trade rumors not true'

If the Colts trade Wayne, that tells me that peyton may not come back. I don't think that Manning will want to come back and start rebuilding this team in the 2-3 years he has left. This might mean the Colts are starting to clear cap space to sign the next qb

Its just a matter of time before the Colts go from first to last. Peyton is getting old and their defense just isnt what it used to be. Reggie Wayne is no longer in his prime (32) and I just don't see Austin Collie and and Pierre Garcon doing much without Peyton Manning. The Colts run game will get a boost though while they start developing a quarterback for the future.

Trade em and stockpile draft pix.    This year is OVA!!!
I really don't think the season is over for the Colts at this time, I don't think that Houston or Tennesse will run away with the Division. I still think that the Colts are still good enough to reach 8-8

I am not a Colt fan but I think that as soon as the Colts get used to the backup QB, then you see the Colts will win an few games.

I know it is not going to happen but with our poor pass defense, ranked 29th I think, putting more heat on the QB could not hurt.  But the price is to high and this is not a Ted Thompson type move and since he has won a Super Bowl and I have not, I think I will leave the GMing to him.  We do have to do something to plug our porus pass defense.  He is 30 but you could reasonably expect another 2 or 3 years out of him.  We are also a little thin on the defensive line.  Luckily all have stayed reasonably healthy.  I am surprised losing Jenkins has not had a bigger impact on us.

i do think someone will go, i'd rather reggie than mathis. mathis is a beast his engine doesnt stop. if you can get a mid 1st rd pick for reggie do it. both will cost too much against the cap to resign. whoever you trade you must make sure you can replace him with that pick. even if they dont get luck, our 1st rounder will be top 10, you can still get a qb to groom. but peyton will make that call i think. he will still want a team he can win with now when he returns.

Wayne AND Mathis to the Saints would make ALOT of sense. Colston seems to always be hurt and the Saints can use another starter at DE since they are underachieving a bit. I wouldnt be against the Saints trading for either or both.

Watch out Indy fans.  This is about the time that the Irsay family picks up and moves.....Little Irsay is just as big of jerk as his father was and seems to be more in the media than Jerry Jones.  He loves his Twitter account...That does not say much for Leadership!

I would love to see Reggie Wayne catching touchdown passes from Drew Brees.  Wayne is from this area and the Saints could always use another can never have too many.
