Schwartz unimpressed with Harbaugh's antics

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh explains what happened between him and Lions coach Jim Schwartz, following San Francisco's 25-19 win over the Lions in Detroit.

Posted by Ryan Wilson

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh is known for his exhuberance. And, really, who can blame him. San Francisco is 5-1 and Alex Smith is playing like a franchise quarterback, two things nobody figured possible … well, ever.

So after the 49ers' fourth quarter come-from-behind win in Detroit Sunday, Harbaugh was predictably pumped up.

Maybe that's understating it a bit. As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Harbaugh looked like a frat dude on spring break after pounding vodka and Red Bulls for two straight days.

In the time it took him to sprint to midfield, Harbaugh showed us his belly and gave Lions coach Jim Schwartz a HOW YA' DOIN'? handshake typically reserved for long lost relatives and people who like each other. That last act prompted Schwartz to give Harbaugh a "Seriously? Are you a grown man acting like that?" glare before running him down, bumping him and sharing a few choice words.

The two teams -- and their coaches -- had to be separated, although we would love to have seen how that coaching grudge match played out.

"I went to congratulate coach Harbaugh and got shoved out of the way," Schwartz said in his postgame press conference. "I didn't expect an obscenity at that point so it was a surprise to me at the end of the game.

"Obviously, when you win a game like that you're excited and things like that, but I think there's a protocol that goes with this league."

By the way, Harbaugh's clown-car antics make Pete Carroll's sideline cheerleading seem benign, even tolerable. That's no easy chore.

After Harbaugh had time to reflect on his antics, he admitted that his emotions may have gotten the best of him.

"I was really revved up. That wasn't me, just shook his hand too hard. ... That's on me," he told NFL Network's Albert Breer. "Handshake was too hard."

Still no word on why Harbaugh showed us his stomach.

Schwartz unimpressed with Harbaugh's antics

Mr. Redwings,
No you don't see what Harbaugh did but you should! He showed a thing called ENTHUSIASM and you want to smack him down for it. Please!
And as far as Detroit's coach goes you could put Sam Rutigliano in as their coach and he would take them to the AFC championship because they are that talented now. ANY coach with exceptional talent will win including this jester. Your comment about his respect is almost totally unfounded as he has done next to nothing in the NFL based on what I could find in a quick search. He is a smart man apparently but he ... Nah, nevermind. You are simply a misguided soul and I forgive you. Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio I followed both the Lions and Browns in good times and bad so I am unbelievably thrilled for the Lions and Detroit but that does not mean I have to accept the antics of their coach. It seems the NFL and others are once again choosing to be politically correct by not blaming either coach but telling them to behave like good children. What a shame. A little genuine animosity creates strong story lines and even stronger rivalries. Let's see what kind of decorum Mr. Schwartz has if the Lions beat SF in the playoffs. I am willing to bet it will be childish (Unless mama Stern warns them in advance and then all bets are off). Go Lions, Go Niners, Go Browns! Have a great day all!

Schwartz unimpressed with Harbaugh's antics

Harbaugh is in fact a good dude, and so is his brother John. He's not ass, nor a jerk. Dude just wears his emotions on his sleeves. Emotions got the best of him immediately following the game, he ran across the field already celebrating with his team, and shook Schwartz's hand as he would anyone else's. There was no ill will towards Schwartz. Schwartz should have just kept it at that and walked away. But he didnt like the fact that his team just got punked on the field, and he felt Harbaugh was punking him with that handshake. Its not like Harbaugh dodged the handshake, but had he wanted to do right thing, all he had to do was keep walking and bring it up at the post game press conference. Not run and bump Harbaugh from behind! Let it go, I'm sure all the other NFL coaches aren't worried about it. Schwartz should be fined for unsportsmanlike conduct!

Man,
I had no idea Lions fans were really furry little kittens. Harbough simply shook the guys hand and patted him on his back saying good game. Have any of you people played or coached? I did, and that is exactly what we do. Not all coaches are fatasses that cannot run around and get pumped up. I think the Lions coach and fans are portraying themselves to be sore losers, and the simple fact is you should be used to it. Much like my team, the Saints, both teams had gone years with losing seasons. But for goodness sakes, unless I missed something replaying the video 20 times I'd say you guy's are making fools of yourselves. Whether you like Harbough or not, he won. You lost. And he can celebrate however he wants to, if you don't like it then beat the guy's team next time so that you have nothing to cry about!
This is just silly.

I have to first clarify that I cannot stand Sf, I am a die hard Saints fan of 30+ years and have had many dreams of the playoffs squashed by Joe Montana, Jerry Rice....the list is never ending...but really? The Lions coach is acting like a sore loser. SF has been losing almost as long as the Lions and he gets offended for the winning coach having some fun? This is just another example of what is going wrong in our society. Winners are winners and should celebrate that fact. I see nothing wrong with what SF coach did, NOTHING. He shook the guy's hand with force and looked him dead in his eyes....maybe for you pansy asses out there that sit in your computer screen that is taken as too aggressive but those 2 guy's are leaders of 60 plus "MEN" who throw their bodies around for 3 hours on Sunday for our enjoyment.
I would be embarrassed if my coach had a problem with another "MAN" shaking my habd too hard and intimidating me. Sounds like he had a bitch moment and if I was Coach H i'd say exactly that.
The next time you guy's play each other is going to be awesome! Hell, the next game you play I bet every commentator makes a wise ass crack about how much of a pussy your coach is being.
But that's just my opinion....and I bet more people agree with me than you.

After watching the tape of the handshake several times All I have to say is GET OVER IT, I dont see an issue with it IF Detroits coach does then let the two of them go out behind the stadium and kick the chit out of one another.

Harbaugh is a little bitch and has always acted like his teams have just won the national title or super bowl after a win.No respect for anyone he plays. One of these days someone is going to flatten him on the 50 yard line.
