Harbaugh-Schwartz feud's been stewing for months

Yesterday's incident at midfield between Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwartz led everything sports-related all of Sunday night and continued through Monday morning. The randomness of the anger between the respective coaches of the 49ers and the Lions shocked everyone and sparked a slew of discussions about who would be the best coach to have in your corner for a steel-cage death match.

But maybe Harbaugh's outburst and Schwartz anger wasn't as random as it seems.

Perhaps, instead, we can trace the incident to a dinner in March of 2011 that featured Schwartz, Harbaugh and Ravens coach (and brother of Jim) John Harbaugh. John relates that, at the dinner, Schwartz essentially told Jim if the lockout continued, he would be unable to win as a head coach. This didn't sit well with Jim.

"We were having dinner the other night and Jim Schwartz told him basically there’s no way you’re going to be able to get it done (if the lockout lasts into the summer)," John Harbaugh said, per the Santa Clara Press-Democrat. "He told him there’s no way you’re going to be able to accomplish what you need to accomplish in two weeks if this thing lasts a while.

"Jim just kind of bit his tongue, which is what you’ve got to do in this situation. Because there’s nothing you can do about it."

In other words, it's pretty obvious that Jim drew a big, fat Sharpie-style circle around the October 16 matchup in Detroit.

And then there's some additional evidence of how things escalated during the game yesterday -- Chris Chase of Yahoo's Shutdown Corner pulled the video of the first-quarter touchdown that Brandon Pettigrew caught, a play which was challenged by Harbaugh.

Obviously, you can't challenge a scoring play. Harbaugh forgot that, and Schwartz definitely let him know, screaming something like "Know the rules!" across the field.

So it's possible (likely?) that such exuberance preceded Harbaugh's celebration. But it also seems likely that this is a feud that's been brewing for longer than just the brief moments before their post-game handshake.

So, in other words it was "premeditated". Goodell is a joke, on the one hand he hands down fines on PLAYERS who behave this way and shakes his finger when it's coaches. Both of them were in the wrong as it takes two to HAVE a "scuffle". Both are EXCELLENT at coaching and NEITHER of them has the class of a Tom Landry. IF Goodell ran the NFL like the PGA they would BOTH have been given AT LEAST a one game suspension in addition to the "lecture" AND a FINE on not only the coaches but the teams as well! If NO ONE else "represents" the league, as management personnel THEY DO; and such behavior SHOULD NOT be tolerated, NO EXCUSES!

Harbaugh needs to grow up. His macho style won't sit for long with players and other coaches. Why didn't Luck jump to the NFL along with Harbaugh? Probably afraid of possibly ending up in San Francisco. Harbaugh was pompous and demanding at Stanford. Wanting a bigger bathroom in his office so his fat head can fit in there. Look at how Rex Ryan has shut his fat trap after a few years. He started his bragging and bravado just like Harbaugh and look where it got them. Both Harbaugh's have been arrogant all their lives. Why didn't Jim "bite his tongue" after the game and shake Schwartz' hand like a man and not give him a shove afterwards?

The funniest thing about this is watching the back and forth between the fans of both Detroit and San Francisco, or more accurately the children of fans of both teams.  Harbough is a spaz and shouldn't have slapped Schwartz on the back, but Schwartz shouldn't have gone all Artest in return.

These idiot neanderthal coaches think rules and common decency don't apply to them, and with the lack of fines the NFL obviously agrees.  Don't these one-dimensional 'roide up coaches have any sense of decency?

The next time either one of these petty baffoon man-children decide to go all sideline warrior on each other, just ban them for a year each till they can learn how to be an adult.

And if you are a fan of either team, and in any way try to justify this blatant thuggism, then don't bother replying here.  This is an article for those who like accountability.

You are a Lions fan first and then a Steelers fan second???? WTF are u 12 and like both of the team colors??? How can u be a true fan if u like 2 teams??? Basically what u are saying is that u like the lions but when they sucked u jumped on the steelers badwagon bc they were going to SBs. For that statement alone...u should be banned from posting anything on an NFL blog

Why don't we just let those coaches shake hands at the beginning and stop this end of game charade.  In fact,  why not let the head coaches do the coin toss? Get the plesantries over early...

Without Calvin Johnson to throw the ball to, and Suh on the D, Detroit is a sub-par team. Stafford is awful. It's a good thing Megatron can come down with every errant pass he throws. I actually didn't mind Detroit going into this week. Now I hope this game is the fuse that lights their 2011 season implosion. All of a sudden Detroit is winning games and this joker thinks he is Bill Walsh. I cannot WAIT to see them not make the playoffs. Or if they do, here's to the Niners beating them again!
