Harbaugh-Schwartz feud's been stewing for months

Yesterday's incident at midfield between Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwartz led everything sports-related all of Sunday night and continued through Monday morning. The randomness of the anger between the respective coaches of the 49ers and the Lions shocked everyone and sparked a slew of discussions about who would be the best coach to have in your corner for a steel-cage death match.

But maybe Harbaugh's outburst and Schwartz anger wasn't as random as it seems.

Perhaps, instead, we can trace the incident to a dinner in March of 2011 that featured Schwartz, Harbaugh and Ravens coach (and brother of Jim) John Harbaugh. John relates that, at the dinner, Schwartz essentially told Jim if the lockout continued, he would be unable to win as a head coach. This didn't sit well with Jim.

"We were having dinner the other night and Jim Schwartz told him basically there’s no way you’re going to be able to get it done (if the lockout lasts into the summer)," John Harbaugh said, per the Santa Clara Press-Democrat. "He told him there’s no way you’re going to be able to accomplish what you need to accomplish in two weeks if this thing lasts a while.

"Jim just kind of bit his tongue, which is what you’ve got to do in this situation. Because there’s nothing you can do about it."

In other words, it's pretty obvious that Jim drew a big, fat Sharpie-style circle around the October 16 matchup in Detroit.

And then there's some additional evidence of how things escalated during the game yesterday -- Chris Chase of Yahoo's Shutdown Corner pulled the video of the first-quarter touchdown that Brandon Pettigrew caught, a play which was challenged by Harbaugh.

Obviously, you can't challenge a scoring play. Harbaugh forgot that, and Schwartz definitely let him know, screaming something like "Know the rules!" across the field.

So it's possible (likely?) that such exuberance preceded Harbaugh's celebration. But it also seems likely that this is a feud that's been brewing for longer than just the brief moments before their post-game handshake.

Did you see MNF last night? The
dolphins need either of these coaches or any coaching staff with half an ounce
of football brains. Miami (which I have never liked so don't peg me as a homer)
has a wealth of talent but can't find their way out of their own way because
they have the worst coaching staff (and owner) in sports history! The Jets are mediocre
at best and have a lower than average quarterback and beat Miami soundly once
the Dolphins gave up late in the first half. Brandon Marshall is another case
of pure raw size and natural talent being wasted through total lack of
preparation, discipline and desire. This guy will set records for the lowest
percentage of times thrown to that he actually catches the ball because he’s barely
half trying. He is a complete waste of space, and would never last in a Belichick
offense. Revis gets away with an amazing number of uncalled penalties by the

I have never really watched an after-game handshake between the coaches...are you people saying that this was out of the norm?

So freaking out after [regular season] wins and screaming at the opposing coach during a game is okay, but ahard handshake and slap is way out of bounds? JimS got what he deserved. The loss and the handshake.

Well... this isn't golf or tennis walsms, it's a violent sport that borderlines gladiators.  This is typical when you have testosterone flowing through your veins.

Funny reading these posts!  First, people dislike winners which Harbaugh is...period!  He will do anything to field a competitive and winning team.  I'm sure many are trying to figure out what he has done with the 49ers.  Sorry folks...this is not the cheating involved.  This is just great coaching, motivation, inspiration and determination.  Now, will they get to the playoffs...sho knows.  Will they be competitive the remainder of the year...absolutely.  So, for all the folks ripping Harbaugh...what about Schwartz?  My opinion, two men wanting the same thing and doing a hell of a job!  Lion fans...stop have a coach with the exact same personality as Jim Harbaugh!  They both will do what it takes to win!  49er and Lion fans...enjoy the ride!

If you listen to what John says during the interview he only states that he had a few go arounds with 'Jim'.  That could mean either Jim.   It was hilarious.

Now, I'm no Ravens fan but I love what John Harbaugh has done up there and I really like the players on the Ravens.  I'm a Lions fan first and a Steelers fan second.

Jim Harbaugh is awesome too.  He is a great coach.  I was wondering if he might have done this for future 49er players wondering if they might consider playing for him.  He was fairly confident at Stanford towards beating USC. Just speculating.

Wish Harbaugh the best except against the Lions!

It's sad to see the demise of gentlemen in pro sports.  All these people need to grow up and play like men, not like they are on the kindergarten playground.  This stuff should have been done away with decades ago for these 2 kids.

The more I hear, the more I think Schwartz is a punk.  I think he's got a bit of a napoleonic complex.  As a Bears fan I watched Harbaugh put up with Ditka's BS for years.  He got killed.  Had a horrible o-line and didn't complain. Same thing in Indy.  He was a tough competitor and it appears he still is.  The funny thing is Schwartz claimed he was shoved and then heard an obscenity.  If you look at the video the only obscenity right after the so called shove was from him.  Then he runs down the field like a weasel to escalate the confrontation and claims he was wronged by Harbaugh's unprofessional behavior.  Talk about revisionism.  Like the Grateful Dead said "You got two good eyes and you still can't see."  Schwartz is blinded by his own ego and obviously has impaired vision.
