Harbaugh-Schwartz feud's been stewing for months

Yesterday's incident at midfield between Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwartz led everything sports-related all of Sunday night and continued through Monday morning. The randomness of the anger between the respective coaches of the 49ers and the Lions shocked everyone and sparked a slew of discussions about who would be the best coach to have in your corner for a steel-cage death match.

But maybe Harbaugh's outburst and Schwartz anger wasn't as random as it seems.

Perhaps, instead, we can trace the incident to a dinner in March of 2011 that featured Schwartz, Harbaugh and Ravens coach (and brother of Jim) John Harbaugh. John relates that, at the dinner, Schwartz essentially told Jim if the lockout continued, he would be unable to win as a head coach. This didn't sit well with Jim.

"We were having dinner the other night and Jim Schwartz told him basically there’s no way you’re going to be able to get it done (if the lockout lasts into the summer)," John Harbaugh said, per the Santa Clara Press-Democrat. "He told him there’s no way you’re going to be able to accomplish what you need to accomplish in two weeks if this thing lasts a while.

"Jim just kind of bit his tongue, which is what you’ve got to do in this situation. Because there’s nothing you can do about it."

In other words, it's pretty obvious that Jim drew a big, fat Sharpie-style circle around the October 16 matchup in Detroit.

And then there's some additional evidence of how things escalated during the game yesterday -- Chris Chase of Yahoo's Shutdown Corner pulled the video of the first-quarter touchdown that Brandon Pettigrew caught, a play which was challenged by Harbaugh.

Obviously, you can't challenge a scoring play. Harbaugh forgot that, and Schwartz definitely let him know, screaming something like "Know the rules!" across the field.

So it's possible (likely?) that such exuberance preceded Harbaugh's celebration. But it also seems likely that this is a feud that's been brewing for longer than just the brief moments before their post-game handshake.

Schwartz is a vag with tiny man anger issues. He is considering back and hand surgery and will be on IR the rest of the season.

I Don't Think Either of Them Did Anything Wrong

I kind of liked seeing this, both coaches were fired up and into the game.  I don't see what the big deal is.

I agree.  The Lions blew it many times.  Props to the San Francisco D.  We lost in every phase of the game but still had chances to win the game.  Not like the old Lions, but we need to get it straightened out because Atlanta comes to town this week!

What I learned from the Harbaugh-Schwartz fiasco.

If a coach who is known for acting too exuberant comes across another coach who is also too exhuberant then the first coach should not get mad at the second coach. But the first coach did. In fact he went all postal on the second coach and tried to tackle him. The first coach should have been generous enough to let another coach celebrate with exhuberance. But instead he looks more like the hypocrite and immature tool that he is been accused of being. I don't see why so many people dislike Jim Harbaugh. Is it because he stood up to Pete Carroll the bully? I suppose it's safe to say that the people here who support Pete Carrol are probably tools and bullies and hate it when people stand up for themselves. When has Jim Harbaugh done any wrong? I challenge you guys to give me examples of why you hate Jim Harbaugh.....I suppose you guys will really hate him in Feb of 2012 after he leads the 49ers to a SB victory. (Yes, I'm dreaming....but it's better than what you guys are thinking of..hoping to see Manning/Newton/Brady or any QB get crippled).

Oh..I guys dslike Harbaugh because he didn't want to coach the Dolphins. Don't fault him for that. Would you coach the Dolphins if you were paid $5 million a year? Yeah..I wouldn't either.

I'm rooting hard for Clemson to play in the NC. It's about time they play for something meaningful.

They're both whining babys.  Jim Harbaugh has it in his DNA, just look at his brother John.  Schwartz has nobody to blame, but himself.  The 49ers gave the Lions every chance to win that game and they fell flat.

Wow, really> jackass.  Watch the replay and take off your Joe Montana glasses for a minute.  I admitted my coach looked stupid.  Now you need to realize yours was being a douchbag and got called out.  I don't agree with how Schwartz handled it, but you need own that that was not just excitement.  That was a shove.  Sorry, man up

I dont care for either of these two guys, but i also saw this as a shove to the side as opposed to a back slap,... I think if it were a quick shake and back slap as he moved past Schwartz, he wouldnt have chased him down,.. Definatley i could see him half shake hands then shove him while moving by... I dont know if it stems from a comment during a dinner, but no love lost here.

For the record, it was not a back slap.  Watch the replay angle they showed tonight.  He DEFINITELY shoved Schwartz.  Not a friendly back slap. That said, Schwartz should have just told him to kiss his ... but opened himself up to criticism by chasing him down the field.  Made himself look bad.  Harbaugh totally started that.  Schwartz was reaching to shake his hand and congratulate him and he got shoved.  That would piss anyone off, even you.

Schwartz is just pissed because he lost the game to Harbaugh. Especially after what he said at the dinner. I'm sure it took every thing for Harbaugh to hold back at that dinner from not reaching across table and smacking the hell out of Schwartz. Schwartz should keep his pie hole shut and concentrate on trying not to lose two games in a row.
