With Garrard out, Orton could be option in OAK

GarrardPosted by Josh Katzowitz

The options for the Raiders to solidify their quarterback position in the wake of losing Jason Campbell for the season with a broken collarbone is dwindling, but the Denver Post is reporting that another might have appeared quite quickly if the Broncos decide to trade Kyle Orton to Oakland.

It seems quite clear that Bengals owner Mike Brown is refusing to trade his former star Carson Palmer, and now, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer has the report that David Garrard -- who’s just been kind of hanging around after the Jaguars surprisingly cut him in the preseason -- needs immediate surgery on a herniated disk in his back.

But the Denver Post, via the Contra Costa Times, is reporting that an unnamed source has said the Broncos would be willing to trade Orton to the Raiders for a draft pick. Which makes sense if Denver is willing to go all-in with Tim Tebow (and at this point, why not?).

The news on Garrard is somewhat surprising, since we all kind of figured Garrard was just sitting back and waiting for the exact right offer to come to him.

Garrard supposedly could have gone to Miami after Chad Henne suffered a season-ending injury, but instead he declined, because as a Miami Herald source pointed out, “he simply didn't feel like playing right now. Garrard apparently talked to the team and showed no great desire to play. He is, according to this version of the story, quite content sitting out this season, spending time with his family, and hitting free agency next March.”

So, what now? Well, if Oakland could get Orton for a relatively cheap price, it probably should go for it. Even if it means the Raiders basically would be sitting out the 2012 draft.

But in order not to play Kyle Boller or Terrelle Pryor – or, for that matter, punter Shane Lechler – that might be worth it.

Orton heading into Sundays game which was there bye and   was in the top ten in td passes and that was with him getting benched the week before at haltime . He didnt play last week and hes still ranked 12th

Orton as it stands right now has 8 td passes

Thats more than Rivers,Flaaco,Campbell,Kolb, and quite a few more and hes tied with Ryan,Cutler,Romo and the guy didnt play the last 6 quarters . Orton made a ton of uncharacteristic mistakes but thats been the case for 80% of the starting qbs this year .

If the Broncos couldve played all of there remaining games on the road Orton would still be the QB. But a change had to be made after the front office  saw that the fans lack of support for orton was affecting the entire the team especially at vital home games .

If the Raiders got Orton they would be fine heck that may even be better but this whole Brancos fans mentallity of blaming Orton for everything wrong with that team is just wrong.

Offer the Broncos a conditional 7th rd pick in 2012 that could move up to a 5th in 2013 depending on how well Orton peforms

The raiders should make the trade for orton for two reasons.  1. campbell, boller, pryor are not the answers long term (next 3-4 yrs). 2. The raiders 12 draft is decimated they have a 1 and a 100th rd selection.  If i could tell you with the first rder i could draft you a functional qb ready to play opening day you'd draft him.  thats orton.  his not very good  but he's adequate.  thats all the y need with their defense and strong running game and spec teams.  The raiders have a shot of not only making the playoffs but doing serious damage.  Houston has shown very little steelers are banged up and old pats are very flawed,  Buff is no better than them, the ravens and chargers are the only higher tiered afc teams. Im not a raiders fan nor a bronco fan so like michael vick i dont have a dog in this fight.  I snap at the chance.

If the Raiders are willing to overpay to keep their season going they can get Orton.  The game between the Raiders and Broncos later this season would be awesome to watch with Orton and Tebow head-to-head.  Orton blew it in Denver.  He showed he was a great practice player and not a gamer.  It's Tebow time.  Boom or Bust here we come.

What about Kafka? He looked pretty good when he came on earlier in the season. Better than Young anyway. They might be able to pry him away.

Sheesh, I don't even know that Kyle Orton constitutes a discernible improvement over Kyle Boller (especially when considering the latter has familiarity with Oakland's play designs).  Of course Denver wants to unload Orton & his $9M or so pro-rated deal; they dropped the ball (so to speak) when they failed to move him this offseason.  They did Miami a tremendous favor though.

My opinion is that Oakland should stay the course with Boller, bring back training camp cut Trent Edwards & continue to focus on running/defense/ST.

Whatever happened to one of the primary, unspoken rules of the game: "Never make a trade inside your own division"....??? If the Raiders do this, it would be asinine.. The NFL is becoming overtly corporate, not like it use to be when teams inside the same division genuinely hated each other. Sad.

BTW, the BEST answer for the Raiders is to make a trade for one Donovan McNabb.... Anybody paying attention to anything at all this year will realize that McNabb fits Hugh Jackson's play calling/scheming just right...... Definitely more so than Kyle Orton (who isn't so bad himself) could ever hope for...

@whitetrash

Why tho?  McNabb has been horrible at Washington and has been horrible at Minnesota.  I think the Raiders, if they can keep Orton standing up in the pocket would benefit greatly from having him there.  My Broncos cannot protect a passer, that is why Orton failed.  He's still a decent QB.

If i was Oakland id wait and see if the Vikings bench McNabb, if so i would make a play at McNabb.

Boller seems to have improved somewhat over the years.  Perhaps if he played full-time he would be ok.  He will never be as good as fellow Cal QB Aaron Rodgers but he has had some great games over his career and he's still young.

The Raiders don't need another washed up quarterback.
