With Garrard out, Orton could be option in OAK

GarrardPosted by Josh Katzowitz

The options for the Raiders to solidify their quarterback position in the wake of losing Jason Campbell for the season with a broken collarbone is dwindling, but the Denver Post is reporting that another might have appeared quite quickly if the Broncos decide to trade Kyle Orton to Oakland.

It seems quite clear that Bengals owner Mike Brown is refusing to trade his former star Carson Palmer, and now, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer has the report that David Garrard -- who’s just been kind of hanging around after the Jaguars surprisingly cut him in the preseason -- needs immediate surgery on a herniated disk in his back.

But the Denver Post, via the Contra Costa Times, is reporting that an unnamed source has said the Broncos would be willing to trade Orton to the Raiders for a draft pick. Which makes sense if Denver is willing to go all-in with Tim Tebow (and at this point, why not?).

The news on Garrard is somewhat surprising, since we all kind of figured Garrard was just sitting back and waiting for the exact right offer to come to him.

Garrard supposedly could have gone to Miami after Chad Henne suffered a season-ending injury, but instead he declined, because as a Miami Herald source pointed out, “he simply didn't feel like playing right now. Garrard apparently talked to the team and showed no great desire to play. He is, according to this version of the story, quite content sitting out this season, spending time with his family, and hitting free agency next March.”

So, what now? Well, if Oakland could get Orton for a relatively cheap price, it probably should go for it. Even if it means the Raiders basically would be sitting out the 2012 draft.

But in order not to play Kyle Boller or Terrelle Pryor – or, for that matter, punter Shane Lechler – that might be worth it.

Bengals' owner Mike Brown is spiting himself by not getting a draft pick for Palmer.  I don't think he has to worry about Palmer coming back to bite him by playing well.

I've had great respect for Palmer as a player -even had him as QB of a fantasy team- but last year he was awful and clearly is NOT the same after elbow surgery.  He often threw high or low on routes where it was clear the receiver had run the correct route.  It was a sad thing to see.  So I think Brown is doing the rest of the league a favor at his own expense.

Kyle Orton is probably the best option at this point unless the Raiders roll the dice and go with Boller

Anyone wanting Oakland to pick up McNabb must be a Chargers fan

Or a Vikings fan. Make the trade now.

If Palmer was playing for Cinci, they would be 1-5 at best.

This is all too funny for Carson Palmer! He has egg on his face. He could have stayed with Cincy and who knows, they could be unbeaten right now? They were in all six games and were just a play or two away from that unblemished mark. Now, he could go back to California and be a starter for the Raiders. But no, he wanted to pout and pack it in. Oh well, good riddance. The Red Rifle is working out fine in your absence. Go Bengals! Stick to your guns Mike Brown. He signed and could be making millions. He left his contract. Hope the Raiders find a replacement soon. Things are looking up for the Raiders and Niners.

Just snap the ball to McFadden.  The qb choices are like choosing between diarrhea and constipation.

No one work nights at CBS? Garrard needs back surgery. I don't doubt he may of not wanted to play for Miami...but I think it was more so him being hurt than anything and needing surgery. He won't be back this year.I don't think he was interested in playing for any non playoff / non contending team. I don't blame him!

Not sure how it would work out. Orton being in Oakland, but it's a win win I guess.Raiders need a QB, Broncos want to get rid of one. One man's trash is anothers treasure as the saying goes.

Do you understand the business side of football. Here I will break it down for you. Starting with Lloyd he is a FA at the end of the season and was offered a 2 yr contract extension which he declined. So in essence he will be a FA at the end of the year and definitely would not resign in Denver which means he leaves with no compensation for Denver. He was traded which I am sure willl be a 5th rd pick.

Isn't that better then nothing? I would say yes.

Orton is in the same boat, he is a FA at the end of the year and definitly will not sign in Denver and comes with a 5-8 mil price tag for the remainder of this year which Denver would love Oakland to pick up his price. If Denver gets a 5-7th rd pick that is also better then nothing. Am I correct?

Even if these are late round picks you can always package them and move up in the draft. Am I correct? Any smart football fan looking at the business side would like those picks.

The bottom line is Denver would rather have 2 late round picks then NOTHING at the end of the year. If your team was in this predicament what would you prefer?

Knowing what kind of idiots are right now running the Broncos they would give up Kyle Orton for just a seven round pick like they give up there All-Star WR in Brandon Lloyd to the Rams today. Take the advantage Raiders and get Orton for nothing because there is no one better out there for you guys to get at QB who can maybe and that's a big maybe save your season yet.
