With Garrard out, Orton could be option in OAK

GarrardPosted by Josh Katzowitz

The options for the Raiders to solidify their quarterback position in the wake of losing Jason Campbell for the season with a broken collarbone is dwindling, but the Denver Post is reporting that another might have appeared quite quickly if the Broncos decide to trade Kyle Orton to Oakland.

It seems quite clear that Bengals owner Mike Brown is refusing to trade his former star Carson Palmer, and now, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer has the report that David Garrard -- who’s just been kind of hanging around after the Jaguars surprisingly cut him in the preseason -- needs immediate surgery on a herniated disk in his back.

But the Denver Post, via the Contra Costa Times, is reporting that an unnamed source has said the Broncos would be willing to trade Orton to the Raiders for a draft pick. Which makes sense if Denver is willing to go all-in with Tim Tebow (and at this point, why not?).

The news on Garrard is somewhat surprising, since we all kind of figured Garrard was just sitting back and waiting for the exact right offer to come to him.

Garrard supposedly could have gone to Miami after Chad Henne suffered a season-ending injury, but instead he declined, because as a Miami Herald source pointed out, “he simply didn't feel like playing right now. Garrard apparently talked to the team and showed no great desire to play. He is, according to this version of the story, quite content sitting out this season, spending time with his family, and hitting free agency next March.”

So, what now? Well, if Oakland could get Orton for a relatively cheap price, it probably should go for it. Even if it means the Raiders basically would be sitting out the 2012 draft.

But in order not to play Kyle Boller or Terrelle Pryor – or, for that matter, punter Shane Lechler – that might be worth it.

..... Brown does not like being pushed into corners and will stand his ground no matter what. IF Marvin Lewis had a pair he would tell Brown they could get a decent draft choice to move him and they definitely need it.

If you guys get Orton, you will win the division. I was a huge Orton hater for a long time, but he won me over. He showed that he can put up huge numbers in denver, but come on, who wouldn't lose a step or two, or have decreased motivation in an organization as screwed up as the broncos? McDaniels trashed the team for years to come, they traded away all the support staff, and now they plan to play tough defensive Foxball with no defense. No sir, I believe you are wrong, and if you guys get Orton, you will be a dangerous team.

Orton started out great in Denver, but has become a product of his environment. mark my words, the Raiders, much to my dismay, will rock if they get Orton under centre.

Shanahan left Denver with a decent team, McLoser just screwed it all up.  Whats left in a half breed team that is not worth much.

I guess this shows just how much faith they really have in Pryor if they are trying out a guy who doesn't even want to play in the NFL and trading for a guy with a noodle for an arm.

And what is up with Mike Brown?  What point is he actually making by not trading Carson Palmer?

actually if you want a real Raiders QB in the mold of LaMonica and Stable there is Graham Harrell sittin on GB's bench, and he is an old raider allready (red raider anyways), he really fits the mold for a Raider QB.

Orton is a good game manager and has experience being the QB on a team that runs the ball. He was not the big armed QB the Bears thought they needed ( Cutler?) Denver can't run among other things and no one will mistake Orton for Manning or Rodgers as a QB to put the team on his shoulders. He is a good fit for Oakland and their great ground game. In Chicago, his mistakes were limited and he was an asset to the team. Denver is just a big mess the last few years with the personel moves and no clear course of action.
