Bengals trade Palmer to Raiders for 1st rounders

One of the names I mentioned in Sorting the Sunday Pile for the Raiders in their search to replace Jason Campbell was retired Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer. But even though the Raiders were reportedly trying to get Palmer, it seemed a highly unlikely end result, given the stubborn nature of Cincy owner Mike Brown.

But Oakland found a way to pry Palmer away from the Bengals, dealing a 2012 first-round draft pick and a 2013 conditional first-round pick to the Bengals for the no-longer-retired quarterback. Reports indicate that the 2013 conditional pick is a first-round pick only if Oakland wins at least one playoff game.

CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman confirms that the trade -- as originally reported by Jay Glazer of Fox Sports -- is a done deal. Glazer noted that Hue Jackson's close relationship with Brown -- Jackson was the former wide receivers coach in Cincinnati -- helped grease the wheels.

What likely helped grease the wheels more? The first-round draft pick that the Raiders gave the Bengals ... because they had to. As Ryan noted yesterday, the Raiders aren't exactly stocked with draft picks these days, having already given up their second-, fourth- and seventh-round picks in trades, and used their third-round pick on Terrelle Pryor.

Palmer to the Raiders

In other words, the Raiders only had one real pick of value in 2012 to give up, and they were apparently willing to move it in order to make themselves a contender for the remainder of the year.

More than anything, though, Mike Brown deserves a tremendous round of applause for absolutely crushing this scenario with Palmer. He called the quarterback's bluff, refused to deal the quarterback, landed a new franchise guy in Andy Dalton, and then when a team got really desperate, received two first-round picks in exchange.

The conditional pick is likely something that involves the Raiders making the postseason and/or riding Palmer to the Super Bowl; at least one would hope anyway. Otherwise, Oakland has, once again, undervalued draft picks.

It's worth noting, though, that the Raiders are anticipating a slew of compensatory draft picks in 2012, because free agents Nnamdi Asomugha, Zach Miller, Robert Gallery and Thomas Howard all departed the Bay Area.

Also worth noting: Jason Campbell's time as a Raider is now finished, for all intents and purposes. He's a free agent after this season and given the committment Oakland gave to Palmer plus Campbell's injury, it's hard to imagine him playing another snap for Oakland.

They are, at least now, all in on Carson Palmer.

redwings .... The Raiders are one of the youngest teams in the NFL, they are one team that does very well with late round draft choices and have done very well in the draft the last 4 years, the big exception of course is Russell. Russell would have been picked in the 1st round no matter what and whoever had that 1st pick that year would have had to take him if they were looking for a QB. The Raiders are a very strong team and are a playoff contender even with Campbell out. Now with Palmer the Raiders are a legit Super Bowl contender.  This team is so deep at RB and WR that as long as the O-line stays healthy and the defense can keep games close that this team can go very far.

Bengals trade Palmer to Raiders for 1st rounders

this will one day be remembered as one of the worst trades of all time. A team which has slowly been building into a great team just stunted their growth by dealing not one but TWO first round picks for a malcontent qb on the downside of his career. somebodys gonna go to the dentist in Oakland for this, with Raider fans doing the drilling

I don't see this a good deal for the Raiders.  They were developing an identify as a strong running team with a developing QB who is already pretty sound.  They deal two high draft picks for a guy who hasn't had a good season in several years.  Palmer may prove a slight upgrade over Campbell, but that won't be enough.  At that price, he has to return to Pro Bowl form immediately, and there's no reason to think he'll suddenly turn that switch.

I really thought the Raiders had a good thing going and were the most solid all-around team in their division.  Now I can't help but think they've upset the applecart and have set themselves up for a big fall.

On the other hand, the Bengals made out like bandits getting those draft picks for a guy they weren't using anyway.  They drafted their QB of the present and future, so this is like Christmas to them.  Except Mike Brown, who has to eat his words about never trading Carson Palmer.

Palmer got exactly what he wanted without hurting the Bengals.  How often does that happen?

Bengals trade Palmer to Raiders for 1st rounders

With the way the Raiders had drafted in the first round recently, this is a steal.  Jamarkus Russel anyone?  I don't think Palmer is worth 2 1st rounders, but if he wins a playoff game this year, yes he is...

2 first rounders for Palmer? Even if they win one game, that will be way too much to pay for a 2 year QB.  Given that the Raiders will probably be going on the road for a Wild Card game, they will probably only give up on First rounder so they will only lose out on the entire 2012 class.  We'll see what Palmer has left after being out of the game for 9 months.
