Bengals trade Palmer to Raiders for 1st rounders

One of the names I mentioned in Sorting the Sunday Pile for the Raiders in their search to replace Jason Campbell was retired Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer. But even though the Raiders were reportedly trying to get Palmer, it seemed a highly unlikely end result, given the stubborn nature of Cincy owner Mike Brown.

But Oakland found a way to pry Palmer away from the Bengals, dealing a 2012 first-round draft pick and a 2013 conditional first-round pick to the Bengals for the no-longer-retired quarterback. Reports indicate that the 2013 conditional pick is a first-round pick only if Oakland wins at least one playoff game.

CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman confirms that the trade -- as originally reported by Jay Glazer of Fox Sports -- is a done deal. Glazer noted that Hue Jackson's close relationship with Brown -- Jackson was the former wide receivers coach in Cincinnati -- helped grease the wheels.

What likely helped grease the wheels more? The first-round draft pick that the Raiders gave the Bengals ... because they had to. As Ryan noted yesterday, the Raiders aren't exactly stocked with draft picks these days, having already given up their second-, fourth- and seventh-round picks in trades, and used their third-round pick on Terrelle Pryor.

Palmer to the Raiders

In other words, the Raiders only had one real pick of value in 2012 to give up, and they were apparently willing to move it in order to make themselves a contender for the remainder of the year.

More than anything, though, Mike Brown deserves a tremendous round of applause for absolutely crushing this scenario with Palmer. He called the quarterback's bluff, refused to deal the quarterback, landed a new franchise guy in Andy Dalton, and then when a team got really desperate, received two first-round picks in exchange.

The conditional pick is likely something that involves the Raiders making the postseason and/or riding Palmer to the Super Bowl; at least one would hope anyway. Otherwise, Oakland has, once again, undervalued draft picks.

It's worth noting, though, that the Raiders are anticipating a slew of compensatory draft picks in 2012, because free agents Nnamdi Asomugha, Zach Miller, Robert Gallery and Thomas Howard all departed the Bay Area.

Also worth noting: Jason Campbell's time as a Raider is now finished, for all intents and purposes. He's a free agent after this season and given the committment Oakland gave to Palmer plus Campbell's injury, it's hard to imagine him playing another snap for Oakland.

They are, at least now, all in on Carson Palmer.

With this trade the Raiders made, is this going to take away some of the carries from Darren McFadden and Michael Bush? If so, are the Raiders going to chuck the ball downfield like in the days of Daryle Lamonica?

Bad move but for now its ok. Like with the whole Mcnabb, Ponder situation its always good to get the young slingers in there and see what they can do. You want to build them up. I understand that they are a playoff contender but this will only hurt them in the long run. They need young guys in there. Thats the only way your going to build a franchise. You have to let the young guys play so they become a good, consistent quarterback.

Who got the better deal?  Hard to say until we see what the Raiders get out of Palmer and with what the Bengals do with their picks.  The Bengals seem to have a pretty stout defense so one might suspect that they would be in the hunt for a RB, Trent Richardson would surely be an upgrade and if they could somehow grab him and Briscoe then the Bengals could be a huge threat in 2012 with Andy Dalton and A.J. Green having a year under their belt.

Bengals trade Palmer to Raiders for 1st rounders

"Now to reality.  The Raiders probably go 3-3 putting them at 7-5 with 4 games left...
If they beat Oakland on Sunday the Raiders are 4-3 and the Chiefs are 3-3, right back in it.
If Chiefs win that game they are 4-3 and provided the Chargers beat the Jets this week the Chargers would also be 4-3

This division is wide open if you ask me."

Bro, I'd say that's some wishful thinking there.  You might win powerball before this stuff starts happening.  KC sucks.  Pretty bad.  They squeaked by a lousy Minnesota team, and a downright awful Indy team.  They kept it close against SD, I'll give ya that, but they were blown out hard besides.  What did they put up, a trey, on the Lions?  Their passing game is so butt and they're a bad team.  Reality.

As far as Oakland going 3-3, it's possible.... but I doubt it.  I'd say that's more likely over their last 6, but the next 6?  Nah.  Next 6 games are KC, DEN, SD, MIN, CHI, MIA.   Chicago could beat them but have shown glimpses of being off.  San Diego quite possibly could beat them but also have shown themselves to have trouble holding off even weak teams.  But the odds that both do AND either of KC, DEN, MIN, or MIA?  I guess it's possible, but not probable at all.  Definitely a better shot that that happens though then KC being 4-3 in 2 weeks, I know that.

Bengals trade Palmer to Raiders for 1st rounders

I thought Al Davis died? He is the only one stupid enough to make this kind of a deal. Carson Palmer? Are you kidding me. Two first round draft picks for a fat out of shape, injury prone QB coming of an injury. This has all the makings of a total disaster. But then again that is the "Raider way" is it not. I guess Al left things in good hands because the team is going on just the same way without him. Good luck with this.

Bengals trade Palmer to Raiders for 1st rounders

Win-win.  The Raiders haven't done well of late with 1st rounders anyway, and with better QB play we beat Buffalo and maybe even NE this year.  Who gives a wet fart about the 24th pick in the draft when you can win now, baby!!!  Do the Bengals even have a scouting department, or is it Mike Brown and Marvin Lewis on the couch with a remote hahahahahaha...

Bengals trade Palmer to Raiders for 1st rounders

I'm ready to quit wearing the brown bag and buy a Mike Brown Jersey! He did not cave in, he called Carson's bluff. I like Carson as a player but turned on him after he refused to play. I'm glad things might work out for him in Cali, but the Bengals won this one. Wouldn't it be fun for CIN to face OAK in the AFC Champ game?
