Report: Christian Ponder in as Vikings starter

Even though the Vikings were down 29 points, Donovan McNabb was indeed benched for Christian Ponder on Sunday night in a loss at Chicago. Minnesota coach Leslie Frazier said he'd announce his decision on who'll start going forward Wednesday, but his mind is reportedly already made up and Ponder will get the nod in Week 7 for the Vikings.

That's according to Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network, who reports that Frazier "has made the change and notified those involved." This is a bit awkward considering McNabb said Monday that he expected to remain the starter.

The logic behind the move to Ponder is pretty simple: the Vikings aren't winning now whether McNabb or Ponder's under center, and McNabb simply isn't anything more than a one-year rental for Minnesota.

Ponder, on the other hand, is the theoretical future of the franchise, as my colleague Pete Prisco wrote on Monday morning. And Minnesota, already five games back of the division-leading Packers, needs to find out if Ponder can be as successful as they hope.

It's unlikely he'll turn around the Vikings season, but he did provide a spark to the offense Sunday, albeit against a prevent defense from the Bears.

And as I noted in Sorting the Sunday Pile, it sure sounds like the rest of the members of the Vikings offense are on board with plugging Ponder in and trying to see what they've got from the rookie out of Florida State.

It's the smart, logical move, even if it won't pay off immediate dividends in terms of games won. But then again, McNabb didn't appear to helping much either.

Report: Christian Ponder in as Vikings starter

Jamal Lewis 2300 carries, Eddie George 2200 carries, Shaun Alexander 1700 carries, Ricky Williams 1600 carries, Priest Holmes 1400 carries

No one can last much longer than 2300 carries. Next year in RB years AP will be a senior citizen. Our time is now

The reason I chose those players where that they should be cheap. Meaning below third round and backup guys. I should add Weiggman and Waters for O-Line. For those that think AP has a lot of years left let me show you Exhibit A: LaDainian Tomlinson. Much like AP he was a workhorse for his first five years (80 games, 1700 carries). Year 6: 1815 yds (Career high). Year 7: 1474 yds (Career Ave). Year 8: 1110 (Career low). Year 9: 730 (Darrien Sproles). 2300 carries is the lifetime of workhorse players. AP will have over 1500 carries by the end of this year. The clock is ticking

Stupid move they will pay for. McNabb actually had a decent game, but the team sucks. They are going to ruin this kid before he gets started. He is NOT Cam Newton, or Andy Dalton! Bye, Bye, Minnesota, you will suck for years to come.

Move had to be made. If you saw the game on TV they even showed McNabb's mom walking out on him before the game was over.

I just have to wonder, where is the next generation of 13 plus year quarterbacks? you know, the Vinnie Testaverdes, Bernie Kosars, Fran Tarkentons, Wade Wilsons, Mark Rypiens etc. I mean these guys played year after year and yet stayed in the game a long time. McNabb's stats can tell you where he ranks compared to the guys I mentioned. He never lost his skills, he lost heart, the love of the game. It's easy to blame him in Phillie (not Defense), then in Washington (good job Grossman) and now in Minnesota. Presently stuck in a mundane job, the thrill is gone, pressure is on especially in the NFC, head to Miami for fun in the sun.

It's probably time for McNabb to walk away. After he gets released this year, who would want him as a starter and i don't think he'd just want to hang around be a mentor. No harm in quitting.

Is the press in Minn. calling the Viks racist the way the press called the Redskins racist last year for sitting McNabb?
