Going rate for yellow shoes? 5K. And the ol' one-finger salute? That'll run you $10K. (FOX/Getty Images)

This is what happens when your team is so much better than everyone else: you have to find ways to make the game interesting because dominating opponents week after week gets old. Perhaps this explains Packers linebacker AJ Hawk who, moments after sacking Rams quarterback Sam Bradford last Sunday, turned to the Green Bay sideline and gave them the finger.

He later apologized, saying it was an inside joke amongst teammates. Although, apparently, Hawk forgot to let anybody else in on it because cornerback Charles Woodson said he "hadn't heard about it." (Then again, Woodson may have just been hanging Hawk out to dry by feigning ignorance, which makes the joke even funnier.)

Whoever knew what and when might be up for debate, but this much was certain the moment Hawk initiated the one-finger salute: the NFL would be fining him for it.

And so they did, docking Hawk $10,000, FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer reported Friday.

In other Packers-got-fined-last-week news, linebacker Clay Matthews was fined $5,000 for wearing bright yellow shoes against the Rams.

The Green Bay Packers look to remain undefeated as they travel to Mall of America Field to square off against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Join Jason Horowitz and NFL.com's Pat Kirwan as they take a look at this upcoming matchup. Also: don't forget to check out the Pregame: Packers-Vikings edition.

Details via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Tom Silverstein:

"The Packers wore their 1929 throwback jerseys that feature navy blue tops, brown helmets and tan pants. The shoes that come with the gear are dark brown. Some players wore white shoes, but used black tape over them so that they were dark and didn't stand out.

"Matthews, however, wore bright yellow shoes, which the NFL deemed as inappropriate and a violation of the league's dress code."

We'd love to see a copy of the league's fine schedule because it has to good for a few laughs. Last season, Matthews was fined $5,000 for roughing up Bears quarterback Jay Cutler. So in the NFL's eyes, Cutler's worth a pair of canary yellow shoes, and half as much as one of Hawk's fingers?

NFL fines AJ Hawk $10K for middle finger vs. Rams

Since this is equivalent to chump change, why is it news? Why not for once, tell us readers where the money goes for these fines? Is it given to charities?

5K and 10K are ridiculous if WE get fined that much in our lives, but none of us make upwards of a million $. The fines have to be ridiculous compared to us because 100$ is nothing to these guys. In another story, a self-imposed  "drops fine" for Packers receivers have them giving each other WR a 100$ gift card to Best Buy every time they drop a pass...thats at least 300$ per drop, and that's SELF IMPOSED. If the fines from the NFL aren't this high, no one would care enough to follow the rules...

For instance, if I was fined 25 cents for drinking at work, I'd say F the 25 cents and drink every day...if it was 10$ per day, I'd probably take notice.

Remember L.C Greenwood?  He wore yellow shoes way back in the day.  I believe he was fined every single game.  I'm not a Steeler fan, but you gotta love that guy!

Now that was funny.  It is probably accurate though. Jay Cutler is not a very good quarterback. He is one of the best at throw interceptions though.  Now that Brett Favre retired Jay Cutler and Eli Manning should be comprtition with each other for most interceptions this season.

TDAISON, I dare ya to say it to his face.  I have no problem with the fines, but $5,000 for a dress code issue, $10,000 for a gesture, well, come on.  I am sure Packers fans will be happy to take up a collection and pay it for them.  Roger Goodell and the NFL, the No Fun League.  Roger do us all a favor and resign.  Your priorities are all mixed up and you are a joke.  The amounts of the fines are inconsistent, do not seem to be tried to anything like seriousness, basically arbitrary.  You want to add 2 more games to the schedule and you are worried about concussions.  You say the fans want it but most of the fans I know do not.  I did not see a major or any outcry for it on these broads.  Your just mad because you do not look good in yellow, or any other color!  But at least your shirt is tuck in.

The NFL is ridiculous. $5000 for yellow shoes? Really? A dress code? Then how did they get to use those nasty uniforms to begin with - talk about horrific.
Yes the NFL has a dress code, has had for years and years and all the players know it ...regulates tucking in your jersey, length and color of socks, shoes, etc etc.  Matthews knew the rule (the uniforms were selected by the Packers and approved by the NFL as "throwback" uniforms, but not the yellow shoes), chose to ignore it and got fined.  To be effective at all, given the amount of money these guys make, the fine has to be fairly high (fining a guy, for example, who makes $1,000,000 $5,000 is like fining someone who makes $60,000 per year $300 -- its really not that much money.

Makes you wonder what the NFL would make on fines if they could see all the birds being flipped by Rams fans this season. The collapse in St.Louis has to be hard after what looked like a promising season last year.

Yes, they havea a dress code.   It shouldn't be that hard for the players to follow it.   They aren't going to allow (minor) exceptions because it would certainly lead to players pushing the envelope week after week.

Obviously ALL of the packers kew about it (read how players with white shoes put black tape over them)   Mathewes was aware of the policy and chose to ignore it.  (He knew he would be fined)

If you are a coach, you can darn near start a riot after a game---but that's OK. However, if you are a player and you wear bright shoes, that's not OK?

I have no problem with the NFL using fines when their employees behave in an unbecoming way. However, I am sure the players would appreciate the respect of some consistency in that structure.
