Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

Q. Jammer blamed the officials in San Diego's loss (US Presswire).Posted by Josh Katzowitz

You can forgive fans (well, almost forgive them) for complaining about referees and thinking (no, truly believing) that the officials are out to screw over their teams for whatever reason. Maybe players think that way too, but it’s uncommon to hear a player emote the things that Chargers cornerback Quentin Jammer said after the Jets 27-21 victory against San Diego.

"I don't have to say anything about what the refs did -- everyone saw how the calls went," Jammer said, via the New York Post.

Then, of course, Jammer went on to say many things about what the refs did, especially when he was asked if the officiating was consistent.

“Yeah -- consistently bad,” he said. “No way it was called fairly. No way. Not at all. It wasn't called fairly at all. Maybe I'm being biased, but I'm just judging off what I saw. It wasn't a fair game called."

Well, yeah. Jammer is biased. His team lost a game it felt it should have won. Quarterback Philip Rivers and the offense did nothing in a 2-minute drill at the end of the game, and the Chargers fell to a Jets team that managed to score its biggest win of the season.

Jammer made the point that the Chargers had zero penalties called on them in their previous game, but then got nailed 13 times for 95 yards vs. the Jets, who were penalized eight times for 60 yards.

"How does a team just get sloppy like that the very next game?" he said. "The answer is, it doesn't."

Well, that’s ludicrous. Every team has the ability to get sloppy. Look at the Ravens, who are 4-1 and one of the favorites in the AFC but looked terrible in Week 2 against the Titans. With the exception of the Packers, teams can look great one week and crappy the next (it’s called parity, baby, and the NFL loves it!). Teams can avoid penalization one week and get tagged with 13 the next game.

Is that so difficult to believe, especially when five of those flags were for either offside or neutral zone infractions, a penalty that’s tough to dispute? Apparently so. Therefore, the officials get placed in the crosshairs.

“They were bad,” safety Eric Weddle said. “Really bad.”

Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

Was just going back through my old posts and saw this reply. Perceived favoritism? I have lived in San Diego for 38 years.... of course I am a Chargers fan. Ebb and Flow? Fifty years has yet to see a Lombardi flow to my home town team. The way this game was called, its become quite clear that this is no longer sport, but just business. So why bother to watch if my team doesn't have a fair chance to win? Whats pathetic is that you think the NFL is "the greatest sport in the World" Its no better than a soap opera. If the Chargers move to LA I am done, there is nothing pathetic about that.

Hate to be that guy, but...
that is not called parity - it is called inconsistency.

Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

I will agree with most that there were bad calls on both sides.  The unfortunate thing that I am noticing with most NFL games is the difficulty officials are having with the "pass interference" and "unnessary roughness" penalties.  It just happens that these penalties are game changers, as they reward automatic first downs, and extend drives for the offense.  Defenders are being penalized for playing good, sound, texbook defense.  The call on Jammer in the 4th quarter was on a 3rd and 19, where he jumped up and knocked a pass down to the ground.  Jammer never made any contact with the receiver.  When Jammer confronted the ref, he indicated that Jammer held down Holmes arm prior to the ball reaching Holmes.  Replays clearly showed that Holmes had both arms cleanly up in the air, attempting to make the catch, and Jammer knocking the ball to the ground.  Did this call impact the game.  Most certainly.  But we are seeing this not only against the Chargers, but every team in the NFL.
In my opinion, officials are too quick to throw the flag against defenders, especially for Pass Interference.  I understand that running through a receiver, grabbing a receiver, holding their arms, hooking the body and twisiting should all be called.  But now, the officials are simply flagging the defensive backs for putting a hand on the receiver.
I sympathize with all defensive backs in this league and commend them for speaking out.  Because if they don't start speaking out, we are going to have to witness this crappy officiating for more seasons to come.

Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

The Chargers are going no where!  They have one of the worst coaches in the history of the NFL.  The truth is this team is consistently unprepared to play.  Talent can only go so far when faced with horrible coaching.

Turn your back on it now. What an absolutely pathetic comment reddog858. Evrything i life is about ebb and flow. Some days go your way others do not but to say you would turn your back on the greatest sport in the world for your perceived some therapy!

Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

I'm a fan of neither team, but did watch the game. The refs did make plenty of bad calls for both sides. The Chargers did get short end of the calls, especially on a call when the Jets lineman clearly moved first. These players are professionals and should conduct themselves as such....that's the reality, not actuality. We all must realize the refs are only human and get to see most things only once without the luxery of replays like all of us fans. Mistakes will be made and whether or not the refs had it in for the Chargers remains to be seen...good luck tyring to prove it. I challenge anybody to try and do what the refs do during a game and then tell me they would get every call right on the first shot. Bad calls are a part of the game, but when you are a professional, you need to find the fortitude to overcome adversity and move forward. As for Rivers, who i call the Dikembe Mutombo of the NFL because of his constant complaining on just about every call that doesn't go his way, he should be embarassed with his horrific display of a 2 minute drill in his game against the Jets.

Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

WAHHHHHH! Poor poor phillip rivers...WAHHHHH! Seriously!? Every game has its share of bad officiating, we see it every weekend and occasionally people complain, but to seriously BLAME the officiating crew for how the Chargers let that game go is ri-freaking-diculous!!!
And for the record, phillip rivers is by far the biggest whiner the NFL has ever seen, I'd rather watch TO work out in his driveway or defend Tony Romo!

Cry Me A Rivers

It looks like someone is trying to unseat Phillip Rivers as the biggest cry baby in the league.  This is the type of attitude that Norv Turner creates with his teams, and it's right about the time you could expect it to happen - when they start playing teams that can compete.

Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

The refs didnt call a good game. On either side.

I saw numerous holds by the Chargers go unpenalized throughout the 1st half, letting them keep driving and it was not good officiating. There were ticky tack calls on both teams in this game. Just let the damn guys play ball without effecting the game. But, most of the games Ive seen this year have had a bunch of bullchit calls in them too. Its happened like this for years, and it seems it will never get straightened out...
