Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

Q. Jammer blamed the officials in San Diego's loss (US Presswire).Posted by Josh Katzowitz

You can forgive fans (well, almost forgive them) for complaining about referees and thinking (no, truly believing) that the officials are out to screw over their teams for whatever reason. Maybe players think that way too, but it’s uncommon to hear a player emote the things that Chargers cornerback Quentin Jammer said after the Jets 27-21 victory against San Diego.

"I don't have to say anything about what the refs did -- everyone saw how the calls went," Jammer said, via the New York Post.

Then, of course, Jammer went on to say many things about what the refs did, especially when he was asked if the officiating was consistent.

“Yeah -- consistently bad,” he said. “No way it was called fairly. No way. Not at all. It wasn't called fairly at all. Maybe I'm being biased, but I'm just judging off what I saw. It wasn't a fair game called."

Well, yeah. Jammer is biased. His team lost a game it felt it should have won. Quarterback Philip Rivers and the offense did nothing in a 2-minute drill at the end of the game, and the Chargers fell to a Jets team that managed to score its biggest win of the season.

Jammer made the point that the Chargers had zero penalties called on them in their previous game, but then got nailed 13 times for 95 yards vs. the Jets, who were penalized eight times for 60 yards.

"How does a team just get sloppy like that the very next game?" he said. "The answer is, it doesn't."

Well, that’s ludicrous. Every team has the ability to get sloppy. Look at the Ravens, who are 4-1 and one of the favorites in the AFC but looked terrible in Week 2 against the Titans. With the exception of the Packers, teams can look great one week and crappy the next (it’s called parity, baby, and the NFL loves it!). Teams can avoid penalization one week and get tagged with 13 the next game.

Is that so difficult to believe, especially when five of those flags were for either offside or neutral zone infractions, a penalty that’s tough to dispute? Apparently so. Therefore, the officials get placed in the crosshairs.

“They were bad,” safety Eric Weddle said. “Really bad.”

Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

If the referees were going to actually officiate a Jets game fairly, they would have to call defensive holding on Derelle Revis every single play.

Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

ALl three of the Jets scoring droves were kept alive by Penalties-  ALL THREE!  IMO the Chargers would have won that game had the Ganggreen refs not handed the Jets their second half miracle comeback

Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

As a Jets fan I can say the Chargers got screwed on a few calls. One in particular, was a pass interference call on Jammer in the 4th Qtr (maybe 3rd??) that was very, very suspect. But that's the way it roll sometimes.

It's certainly invalid to say that teams can't get sloppy between games, especially when the schedule shifts dramatically from game to game.  The Chargers so far have only defeated Minnesota, Kansas City, Miami, and Denver (the first three at home).  Is it really that big of a surprise that when they actually face a reasonable defense they might get baited into making more mistakes?

Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

There were a couple questionable pass interference calls. One in particular on Jammer when he did nothing and got flagged. On the other hand, there was one play where Santonio Holmes took a forearm shot to the helmet just before the ball arrived and there was no flags.

However, Jammer's point that you can't "get sloppy" from one week to the next is completely invalid, and the Chargers D-Line proved it in this game. The repeated neutral zone infractions that were called were all deserved as the Chargers kept jumping offsides.

Also, the overall discrepancy in penalties was's not like the Lakers taking 27 free throws while their opponents take 4.

The Chargers defense did get sloppy, and they have themselves to blame, much more than the refs.

Shut up, watch the film, and get better.

Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

I watched that game and I did think a few calls went against the Chargers, but nothing out of the ordinary.  That's the NFL, I see it all the time.  Only the Patriots ALWAYS have calls go their way, for everyone else it might go for you or against you any given week.

I think the Chargers just aren't that good.  Judge had an article up where he pointed out who they played and the struggles they were having.  That was enough for me to switch my pick to the Jets, and the Jets pulled through.

The Chargers just are not very good.  Is it the refs that have caused Rivers to have what, 9 TD and 7 INT on the season?  Is it the refs fault Gates has only played in 2 games now this season?

They just aren't good.  The Raiders well have this division, just need Carson to get comfortable in the offense.

I don't care for either of these teams...
If they could play each other and both lose I'd be fine with that - but - the officiating was indeed VERY one sided. Even the announcers were saying that the pass interferance calls against the Chargers were poor officiating and I agree. The chargers got called for every little touch... every time Sanches threw a third down drive ending incompletion - and he threw many - there was a call for ticky tack - magically creating a FIRST DOWN... a few of them I laughed out loud about but it definately kept several of the JETS drives alive
