Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

Q. Jammer blamed the officials in San Diego's loss (US Presswire).Posted by Josh Katzowitz

You can forgive fans (well, almost forgive them) for complaining about referees and thinking (no, truly believing) that the officials are out to screw over their teams for whatever reason. Maybe players think that way too, but it’s uncommon to hear a player emote the things that Chargers cornerback Quentin Jammer said after the Jets 27-21 victory against San Diego.

"I don't have to say anything about what the refs did -- everyone saw how the calls went," Jammer said, via the New York Post.

Then, of course, Jammer went on to say many things about what the refs did, especially when he was asked if the officiating was consistent.

“Yeah -- consistently bad,” he said. “No way it was called fairly. No way. Not at all. It wasn't called fairly at all. Maybe I'm being biased, but I'm just judging off what I saw. It wasn't a fair game called."

Well, yeah. Jammer is biased. His team lost a game it felt it should have won. Quarterback Philip Rivers and the offense did nothing in a 2-minute drill at the end of the game, and the Chargers fell to a Jets team that managed to score its biggest win of the season.

Jammer made the point that the Chargers had zero penalties called on them in their previous game, but then got nailed 13 times for 95 yards vs. the Jets, who were penalized eight times for 60 yards.

"How does a team just get sloppy like that the very next game?" he said. "The answer is, it doesn't."

Well, that’s ludicrous. Every team has the ability to get sloppy. Look at the Ravens, who are 4-1 and one of the favorites in the AFC but looked terrible in Week 2 against the Titans. With the exception of the Packers, teams can look great one week and crappy the next (it’s called parity, baby, and the NFL loves it!). Teams can avoid penalization one week and get tagged with 13 the next game.

Is that so difficult to believe, especially when five of those flags were for either offside or neutral zone infractions, a penalty that’s tough to dispute? Apparently so. Therefore, the officials get placed in the crosshairs.

“They were bad,” safety Eric Weddle said. “Really bad.”

Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

The REFS didn't call a fair game?  REALLY??  Did they design that stupid 2-minute drill?  Did they tell Rivers to ignore his backs and throw to covered receivers?  Did the refs really make the Chargers D-line jump offsides like 200 freakin' times?  NO.  This was a loss pinned squarely on the lapel of Norv Turner, with a matching item for Phil Rivers.  SOMEONE FIND FAT BASTARD!!  He's stolen Phil Rivers' mojo!!  I'm a Charger fan, yes I am, but I refuse to blame the refs for any game other than the one in Denver a couple of seasons ago.  This game was lost because the head coach is a wussy, the quarterback is regressing, and our DBs have a hard time covering anyone taller than 5'10".  Simple...but not the refs fault.

Of course Jammer didn't mention a word about the pathetic excuse for a 2 minute drill at the end of the game.

Turner and Rivers should be ashamed to show their faces after that.

Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

I totally agree. Green Bay committed a pass interference that wasn't even called. Even Troy Aikman said "I think they got away with one". However, Green Bay was the recipient of pass interference calls on incidental contact for un-catchable balls. The refs are biased, and they stink as well. They ruin the game.

Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

Now you're going to throw out the 10am West Coast start as one of teh reasons you lost? Like this is the first time a team had to travel across the country to play a game?

And its not homerism but a fact.  The Jets have made it further than San Diego the last 2 years - fact.  They were favored to go further than the Chargers at the start of this year - fact. The Jets are better than the Chargers at every position except QB (LB, offensive and defensive line, DB's, Special Teams, RB's and WR's) - that's a fact.

We should all just quit the talk and see which team plays better on the field - oh wait, we already did. You better focus on Oakland and not the Jets - cause the wildcard aint coming out of the West.

I don't know if the calls changed the outcome of the game but have to agree it was some of the worst calls I've ever seen.

  1. 6 offsides/neutral zone infractions. If you watch the replay the right tackle moved on 3 of them drawing the defence offsides. on one other the Tight end moved. some of these wern't little flinches but big moves.
  2. Pass interference on Jammer in forth quarter. There was no interference even the announcers were shocked and keep playing it over and over showing that it was a bad call.
  3. Sanchez dives and the line judge makes the spot a yard short should be 4th and 1. The umpire comes in from the backfield and moves the ball and signals first down. As noted by the announcers it's not the unpires job to mark the spot especially if he is out of possition. the line judge was right there, yet the umpire marked the ball when he was 15b yards behind the play.
All together shotty work but Charger fans should be used to it, remember the debacle in Denver.

Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

Of course the Chargers got screwed. New York is a big market and the NFL wants to make sure they make the playoffs. personally I don't care for either of these teams but I do know how the NFL operates.

Chargers say refs didn't call fair game

Let's say the Refs have been consistantly bad this year. Jammer's PI on Holmes was a bad call, but he didn't turn around to locate the ball, that is what Revis does so well that allows him to get away with the contact. Turn around, make a play on the ball and you will npot get called.

The Jets had some really bad calls go against them during their road trip (roughing the passer against Jason Cambell comes to mind, the Mark Sanchez foward pass fumble also comes to mind, with an obvious illegal hit to Sanchez that was fined but not called). It seems the Refs are just favoring the home team this year for whatever reason.
