Report: Patriots release Leigh Bodden

Cornerback Leigh Bodden, a nine-year veteran, was surprisingly released from the Patriots on Friday, a source told Pro Football Talk.

BoddenThe move came as a shock, because, as Pro Football Focus points out, Bodden was the team’s best cover corner this year -- he played 222 snaps this year and had been thrown at 22 times, allowing 12 receptions for a touchdown while breaking up four passes. Considering the Patriots defense is ranked last in the league by allowing 423.7 yards per game (they’re also ranked last with 322.2 passing yards allowed), you have to wonder if this is a football-related move or from something that occurred off the field.

On Friday morning, Bill Belichick was asked about Bodden’s play, and he responded, “We’ll skip that right now.” He also said the team hadn’t made an announcement about anything Bodden-related.

"He's enjoyed this time in New England, but after meeting with coach Belichick this morning both parties agreed it was time to move on,” agent Alvin Keels told ESPN’s Josina Anderson. “Leigh is totally healthy and can contribute right away.”

The HC thinks he can win with busboys in the secondary. Pats are a great reg season team, bullies. But they aren't winning any super bowls with that mess of a defense.

Josh clearly has no clue what he is talking about. Bodden really hasnt been good at all. When thrown at the qb has a rating of almost 100. Bodden's penalties have also been coming in handfuls and at really bad times. Bodden is slow and old and simply done. This is a greatr move by the pats.

Excellent move by BB.  Bodden was a much-touted DB when he arrived but has been a disappointment during his time in NE.  I don't know why the release is such a shock to the writer.  He has been injured for a great deal of time, not his fault but you're useless if you can't play.  I was not impressed with his play when he did play.  He got beat many times, Mr. Writer.  The PATs passing defense is last.  They can only continue to remain last or get better.  Belichick knows what he's doing.  He's continuing to clean house because he won't accept mediocrity.  And neither will real PATs fans.  That said, the D-line needs to step up the rush!  Or there will be more changes.

When was his contract up?  That usually is the catalyst for getting dumped in NE, $$$, not performance.  Just ask Randy Moss that.....
