Cornerback Leigh Bodden, a nine-year veteran, was surprisingly released from the Patriots on Friday, a source told Pro Football Talk.

BoddenThe move came as a shock, because, as Pro Football Focus points out, Bodden was the team’s best cover corner this year -- he played 222 snaps this year and had been thrown at 22 times, allowing 12 receptions for a touchdown while breaking up four passes. Considering the Patriots defense is ranked last in the league by allowing 423.7 yards per game (they’re also ranked last with 322.2 passing yards allowed), you have to wonder if this is a football-related move or from something that occurred off the field.

On Friday morning, Bill Belichick was asked about Bodden’s play, and he responded, “We’ll skip that right now.” He also said the team hadn’t made an announcement about anything Bodden-related.

"He's enjoyed this time in New England, but after meeting with coach Belichick this morning both parties agreed it was time to move on,” agent Alvin Keels told ESPN’s Josina Anderson. “Leigh is totally healthy and can contribute right away.”

"allowing 12 receptions for a touchdown"....I read it different, no where it says 1 TD, it says 12 receptions for a touchdown...in my book, that's 12 touchdown...someone here help me with the math, please....just bill being bill...

Even as a non-Patriot fan, there is no doubt in my mind that by week 15/16, New England will be playing great defense, regardless of personnel.  They seem to do it year in and year out.  The Hoodie is the man.

Hey duDE, he was thrown at 22 times, allowed 12 receptions and 1 TD. It was just worded wrong as usual on CBS. I would love to see the Redskins pick him up and get rid of that idiot DeAngelo Hall. He could not cover me.

If he was thrown at 22 times, and 12 were for TDs, what took them so long to cut him? Obviously Bodden inability to cover had been exposed and teams were definitely exploiting it. Belichick had most likely seen this on film for weeks and was able to hide it somewhat and hope he would tighten up...'guess he didn't. I expect to see at least 90 points between the Pats and Steelers this weekend...

Meriweather sucked, his release was inevitable.  He made pro-bowls based upon a reputation he didn't deserve.  Definitely a strange move to release a DB from a team who could use as many DB's a possible.  In Bill I trust but I would have liked to have seen some better production out of the DB's currently on the team.  I guess besides McCourty and possibly Arrington it will be Poo Poo platter approach to trying to cover team's WRs.

There has to be more to it, possibly something off the field, that led to his release. If not, the Seahawks could definitely use a CB, seeing as they've lost 2 in the past 10 days. He needs to get here this weekend and help defend AJ Green. I'm going to the game with a Bengals fan, and I don't want him reminding me every day of how Green went off for 200 yards against the 'hawks.
