Polamalu slapped a loose ball into the Patriots' end zone. Turns out: you can't do that. (US PRESSWIRE)

The Steelers may have dominated the Patriots for 59 minutes and 41 seconds Sunday, but Tom Brady has a knack of pulling out improbable victories, and his history in Pittsburgh has been impressive. So when he took the field with 19 seconds left and the Pats trailing by six, the game wasn't over.

That became official some six seconds later, after defensive end Brett Keisel stripped Brady and Troy Polamalu knocked the loose ball into the end zone for a New England safety.

But here's the thing: when Polamalu sprinted from his centerfield position to make a play on Brady's fumble, he punched the ball a good 20 yards into the Pats' end zone. That's illegal.

Polamalu's heads-up play was also against the rules.

Via the Associated Press: The rule states that a player may not bat or punch a loose ball in the field of play toward the opponent's goal line; a loose ball that has touched the ground in any direction, if it is in either end zone; or a backward pass in flight, which can't be batted forward by an offensive player."

The call is not reviewable by video replay, though neither Tom Brady nor the Patriots sideline complained at the time. And even if the penalty had been assessed, it would've been 10 yards from the spot of the infraction. Which means New England would've had the ball on their own 25-yard line with about 12 seconds on the clock and no timeouts.

Given that the Pats don't have a deep threat on the roster, and Brady's longest pass to that point went for 23 yards to tight end Rob Gronkowski, we feel confident in writing that the outcome was unaffected. Plus, it afforded us the opportunity to see kicker Stephen Gostkowski drop-kick the ensuing onside kick clear out of bounds.

Polamalu was asked about the play after the game, and he channelled Costanza before answering.

"Whatever is going to get me in trouble, he said. "I'm saying the opposite."

Nothing to worry about, Troy. The NFL doesn't believe in frivolous fines.

After Gronkowski was robbed of his TD Brady took 1 minute and 20 seconds to run 2 plays. That is terrible clock management. Look at the play by play The bad TD call play started at 4:15, the refs had the ball set at 4:02. When the started the second play the clock was down to 2:48 and that play took about 6 seconds.

As far as the facemask on Polamalu. Watch the play in slow motion. Polamalu came in squared up and high, Welker turned his right shoulder towards Polamalu and the dipped his shoulder causing his head to drop a good foot or so. Troy never puts his fingers in the mask. He basically does twist Welkers head with his arm though. That is not a penalty, but still don't like to see a players head get twisted penalty or not. I like Welker and Gronkowski (a Pittsburgh native). You can't blame a guy who is flying at that speed for the receiver ducking his head. It even says that in the head to head hits rule. Sorry I know you guys who support other AFC North teams hate the Steelers, but the Steelers won against a great team and they earned it.

They do know the rules

Via the Associated Press: The rule states that a player may not bat or punch a loose ball in the field of play toward the opponent's goal line; a loose ball that has touched the ground in any direction, if it is in either end zone; or a backward pass in flight, which can't be batted forward by an offensive player
This is straight out of this article and it clearly states by an OFFENSIVE player. Troy Polamalu plays DEFENSE for the Steelers.
Also you can't compare this to a college game, the rules between the two vary.
This play had nothing to do with the Patriots losing. With less than 20 seconds left Tom Brady had the ball stripped away from him and if that is not enough then how about several Patriots fans saying if the penalty is assessed and they get the ball with 12 seconds left they still don't win. They needed a TD and Brady's deep pass (over 25 yards in the air) was off all day. The blown TD call did hurt them, but it is their fault they took 2 minutes off the clock trying to score from the one yard line!!!!! Plus BB didn't challenge the call that is his fault. Why because he said from the angle he saw it from it didn't look good. I see Ravens, Browns, Bengals, Jets, and Raiders fans on here crying, but no Patriots fans. Why do you think that is?

Polamalu punch vs. Patriots was illegal

Being a Patriots fan, I thought the play should have been a touchback.....at first. However, after thinking about it....can you really say that Polamalu batted the ball INTENTIONALLY? You can't prove intent.....maybe he was trying to pick it up and just hit it accidentally. Probably not....but you can't undeniably say he meant to do that. And since the defensive team never had possession the last ones to have it was the offense. Thus when it rolls out of the end zone it's a safety. HAD Pitt gotten possession and then lost it and it went out the back of the end zone it would have been a touchback. That's what I think anyway, maybe I'm wrong.

Either way. BB should have challenged the obvious TD that Gronkowski had which would have left more time. However, I would submit, that since Brady was getting dogged all day I doubt he would have been able to taken them down to score anyway.

I'm not from Ohio, but if you are a Steeler fan you can thank Ohio for Roethlisberger and James Harrsion. Without them, the Steelers don't win a thing.

How was that illegal? He wasn't the offensive player and he didn't bat it to the opponents goal line.
it was legal.

Yes Mr. Bob only a Steeler could get away with that and if only they could be as upstanding as your beloved Buckeyes. Who never do anything wrong. Wait did'nt they get a bunch of players suspended and their coach got fired! In case you have'nt noticed most Ohio fans slather Buckeye stuff on the internet because they are relatively successful. Its funny Ohio has 2 professional teams and its very rare that you see them use the Browns or Bengals next to their names. Only the true diehards do and I respect them for that.

Its expected that with success you are going to get all the haters bashing the Steelers. If one of your boys on the Jets would have made that play you would high five all your boys and say great play. You would take Polamalu on your team in a heartbeat and go run out and buy his jersey as soon as he was signed. There is so many missed and blown calls in the NFL for every team, but it seems like if your team is successful you get more in your favor than the other teams according to less successful teams fans. I don't recall seeing Tom Brady in the postgame conference berating the officiating and saying they got screwed. I watched sports shows and for some strange reason there was no big media circus going on how the Patriots got screwed and should have won, but you have come up with this one in your little mind. Does Bigfoot live in your basement and aliens from outerspace come to visit you on the weekend. You admonish 2 of the Steelers Super Bowl wins, and of course the 2 they lost to the Cowboys and Packers  the officiating I am sure was right on point in your opinion. So you take the 2 that they won away because of the officiating in your fantasy world, that still gives them 3 more than your team. The Steelers have been to 8 Super Bowls and your team has been to 1 a REALLY long time ago which you won and can say your team is undefeated in Super Bowls. Maybe the Jets will get there someday if the Steelers would stop knocking them out of the playoffs.  I would have to say you are just a little BITTER. Don,t hate the players. Hate the game.

Don't understand why it's a surprise.  It all started back with the Holy Roller and it has been a rule since.  How convenient refs forget this rule for another Steeler victory.
