Bubba Smith died of acute drug intoxication

Bubba Smith died at the age of 66 (AP).Posted by Josh Katzowitz

In early August, Bubba Smith, a two-time Pro Bowler who played for the Colts, Raiders and Oilers, died at the age of 66, and it was originally believed that Smith had died of natural causes. An autopsy, though, has turned up a different conclusion.

According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office, Smith died of acute drug intoxication and other conditions.

An autopsy showed Smith had high levels of phentermine, a weight-loss drug, in his system, and a coroner’s spokesman also said Smith had heart disease and an enlarged heart.

Such a sad story for a once proud NFL pro and a man who made an impact in his post-career pop culture with his Police Academy appearances and his Miller Lite beer commercials.

Bubba Smith died of acute drug intoxication

Why does the media have to sensationalize all stories about present and past atheletes? What good does it do to tell the demeaning aspects of Bubba Smiths death???Would'nt it be better to have a on line  eulogy of all the good things in his life rather than concentrating on one weakness that eventually caused his downfall?Come on people can you remember this man as a player(if you are old enough)playing his heart out every Sunday?I can and i think its a sad state of affairs when the only thing young people who did'nt will only remember"yeah that was the guy who ODed.

Bubba Smith died of acute drug intoxication

Well let's see.

1.  Head line says "Acute", not "Chronic".  Seems to be accurate.  2.  A person with known heart problems is not suppose to be taking drugs like phentermine because it can kill you IF your heart is impaired.  So again that the drug killed him seems to be accurate as well.  He didn't die of heart disease.  He died because of the drug in his system.
3.  Guess why you can't buy medication with this ingredient without an ID or going to the pharmacist?  Its one of the drugs used to make crystal meth.
4.  Some times the truth hurts.

Bubba Smith died of acute drug intoxication

I agree with PolishPounder that it was a poorly written atricle.  After all, the drug in his system was for weight loss.  So he was looking to lose weight.  How many people try that, but to indicate he was a drug user was wrong.  My first though when I saw the word "drug" that it was hard drugs like cocaine or something similar.
From all I have ever read or heard about Bubba Smith, he was a good person and a heckuva great football player.
