LT: Rivers 'distracted' due to being 'the guy'?

Philip Rivers is struggling right now, no question about it. Statistically, he's way off his production from the past two season in 2011. And the Chargers final play of regulation in a tough loss to Kansas City Monday, in which Rivers fumbled a snap before taking a knee, sums it up succinctly.

No one's precisely sure what's wrong with Rivers, but there are multiple theories -- a hidden injury, offensive injuries, Antonio Gates' health -- as to why he's not performing up to par. Rivers' former teammate, LaDainian Tomlinson, has his own idea, and it involves leadership.

"I don't know what Philip may be going through right now. But I will say, to me, he seems distracted for some reason," Tomlinson said to the media recently. "It just seems like he's distracted. I always said this: It's hard to be the guy on the team. When they say this is your team. It's hard to be that guy now. Because you get all the questions of what's wrong and what's right.

"Then, you get your teammates that expect certain things from you. When that doesn't happen, you get strange looks in the locker room. So it's hard to be that guy when it's your team. So that may have a little bit to do with what's going on."

I'm not so sure this rings true. Rivers played all of 2010 without Tomlinson, and though the Chargers didn't make the playoffs, he had a monster statistical year and kept the Bolts afloat despite more injuries than they suffered so far this year.

It sounds like A.J. Smith, Chargers GM, probably agrees with me. Or just doesn't like Tomlinson sticking his beak in someone else's business.

"I agree with what LT said about it’s hard being the guy," Smith said, via the San Diego Union-Tribune. "But I think it’s a lot harder when it’s no longer your team, and you’re not the guy."

Annnnd, burn. Oh right, but Rivers had a comment as well.

"Based on what you told me," Rivers said. "He has to be speaking from experience. I don’t feel that burden, nor has it had anything to do with the struggles.

"People say, 'It's your team.' I’ve never bought into that."

Naturally, Smith and Rivers are referencing the fact that Tomlinson wasn't exactly a leader in his final year with the Chargers. As you may recall, before the 2010 season began, Rivers expressed that there was "a little bit of relief" in San Diego with Tomlinson gone.

This went over really well with Tomlinson, who ripped back at Rivers and Gates, so to say he's not biased on this subject is silly.

LT: Rivers 'distracted' due to being 'the guy'?

It's called lackluster, uninspired play.  Notice how teams take on the temperament/personalities of their respectives coaches.  How many players got injured and kept themselves on the sidelines for the Chargers in the last game?  The answer is many.  How many got injured and remained out for the Chiefs?  The answer is none.  Do you see the correlation?  Players are rallying for the undermanned Chiefs.  Definitely the opposite for the talented but uninspired Chargers.  If the Bolts don't try to "right the ship" now, then they will get there behinds handed to them on Sunday.  And if they play motivated as the underdog, then they stand a fighting chance to be in this game, despite what everyone is thinking.

I'm not sure I believe what Tomlinson says is true, but The Charger's denying everything and putting forth no explanation themselves doesn't exactly give me any reason to take there side. Players are always very quick to deny everything yet often give absolutely no counter. "It's not that, but I have no idea what it is" in effect. Until they give me something else to believe, I'm betting its distraction, injury, or the lack of Gates...

Nothing bad was said. Nothing to stir up.  Calm down.

Rex Ryan knows the problem in San Diego, problem is that when you tell the truth and it involves another head coach you get a lot of heat. I guess it's some violation of "the good ol' boys club" to point out the obvious!  If Norv Turner ever had a set, he would have found a way to inspire his team to pund the Jets. Alas we saw the result, I now believe Rex would have had 2 rings for the Chargers with that talent.

San Diego is my team, but c'mon MAN! It's nice to see player's getting along as always. Need the Chargers be reminded that if it were not for their own BLUNDER in drafting Ryan Leaf way back, they wouldn't have had the LUXURY of having one of the ALL-TIME great back's playing for them and setting records in the powder blue. Now...take LT off the Chargers the past 10 years and what do you get? No one talking about San Diego that's for sure. A.J Smith wasn't known until LT made San Diego relevant again. I suppose Gates and the boys didn't appretiate the W's LT brought them with all those TD's. One last thing...doesn't Phillip Rivers remind us of Dan Marino? Great QB's, stat wise. I see Rivers going down that road, unfortunatly.

Just another stupid article trying to steer up shit between players. With Lebron and Wade watching the basketball season going in the tank , it seems reporters need someone or something else to trash on.
