Everyone knows that Ravens-Steelers games are a different (read: more violent) brand of football and that was exactly the case on Sunday night, when Baltimore snuck out a win in Pittsburgh. Ray Lewis and Ryan Clark delivered the most notable hits of the evening -- Lewis knocked Hines Ward with a clear helmet-to-helmet hit but wasn't flagged, while Clark picked up a 15-yard penalty for a hit on Ed Dickson.

Tuesday, Ryan Wilson told you to expect fines for both guys, and on Wednesday, they came down from the league. Lewis was fined $20,000 for his hit on Ward and Clark was fined $40,000 by the NFL for his hit on Dickson. Clark is especially unhappy about it.

Reviewing Week 9

"The hit wasn't malicious at all," Clark said, per Will Graves of the Associated Press. "i know how to knock somebody out if i want to knock them out. Am I supposed to let him catch it and then wait for him and hug him? Should I throw a pillow at him? Should I blow a whistle?"

And the Steelers safety had some choice words for Commissioner Roger Goodell as well.

"Somebody else needs to step in ... not that I respected Roger before this ... but this is ridiculous," Clark said. "I'm not going to sit across from [the Commissioner] unless they handcuff me. which is probably the next step anyway."

Lewis wasn't happy either, but had less aggressive words for the league office.

"Yeah, I heard from the league and like I said they fined me whatever they was going to fine me," Lewis said, via Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times. "The thing is you definitely respect them trying to protect player safety. At the same time, it won't change not one way I play this week no matter what the fine is. You can't stop playing defense the way defense has always been created to play. When the receiver has the ball, your job is to disengage him from the ball. You never want to hurt nobody.

"I've been in this business too long. I just think once you start getting into these fines I don't know how they come up with the numbers most of the time."

Well, actually, the NFL has a pretty standardized system for fines, though there is some confusion about the application. A fine for a hit on a defenseless player or impermissible use of a helmet (including illegal launching) is $20,000, which explains Lewis' fine.

And a repeat-offender fine is $40,000, which is why Clark, who's been targeted more than once by the NFL, got double what Lewis did, even though the safety claims the hit wasn't against league rules.

Apparently the Steeler fans can't read either because it is clear why the fine was larger for Clark, he is a repeat offender.  He has already been fined in the past for the same type of hit where as Lewis has not.  Make it a Ravens Steelers thing if you want Steelers fans but if the situation was reversed and Ray was the repeat offender then Ravens fans would not be doing this much complaining.  I don't like Goodell either but come on, he is not anti Steeler, that is insane.

Lewis' hit would have never been helmet to helmet if Ward didnt duck. Ray Lewis' shoulder pad would have hit Ward in the neck. Ray should send Ward the bill. If Hines wasnt a coward it would have been a legal hit. Plus, Lewis couldn't react to Ward ducking. He already had forward momentum. I dislike both teams and am fine with the fines. But steelers players should always have to pay double. It's just the way i should be.

Goodell who has never played the game, is giving out fines for hits? Why don't you just take away the defense all together, then it will be the CFL.
It's brilliant to let the lawyers ruin this great game. I understand player safety, but this is insanity. Great defense is just as important as a 45-38 game.
If that's all Goodell is wanting, a video game sport, he should just buy Madden and play it all the time. And let football players play football. Not a game of two-handed tag with blocking.

Ryan Clark fined $40K, Ray Lewis fined $20K

Well let's see: Ray Lewis hits a receiver blatantly in the head and knocks him out of the game, (with no flag on the play mind you) and Ryan Clark hit a guy with his shoulder and gets a flag and a fine. Yeah that's fair. Come on Goodell try not to be so blatantly obvious your distaste of the Steelers. This is the second year in a row the Ravens hit illegally and not much is done. This is so screwed up.

You steeler fans are a bunch of cry babies. The power has changed in the AFC north and you want to bury your head in the sand.

Ryan Clarks hit wasn`t clean. It was helmet to helmet on a defenseless reicever. To me it looked a bit worse then hit Ray Lewis delievered, but still I think should have been fined the same amount.

You have to be wearing special Steelers glasses for Clarks hit to look clean. I dont think either should have been fined! Its football!

You gotta be kidding me. Ray Lewis, once a murder suspect, knocks a guy out of the game, while Clark's hit which is perfect football and the player plays, but Clakr gets a bigger fine. This proves Goodell is an idiot, and needs to resign now. What a joke. Goodell is ruining football, and I am about done with spending money on this league if this blatant cheating against the Steelers is not stopped.

Notice how it is ONLY blatant cheating when the Steelers lose! When they win and the calls go their way the refs are doing a great job! Hilarious!

Pity the poor Pit posse cause his team plays dirty all the time and gets caught fined. Deal with it or do as you suggest and kill yourself.
