Packers defensive lineman Johnny Jolly -- currently suspended indefinitely by the NFL -- received a six-year prison sentence for violation of his probation on Thursday.

Jolly was charged with possession of codeine in October (in addition to tampering with evidence) -- the third drug arrest for Jolly in three years. His most recent arrest violated the parole that spared Jolly jail time stemming from a charge in April.

The defensive lineman has been featured in numerous media interviews leading up to his verdict, in which he essentially filed an emotional public plea for another chance.

However Jolly, drafted in the sixth round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Packers, has apparently run out of chances, at least for now. This is his final season under contract with the Packers and given his recent run of arrests, he may find it difficult to secure an early release from prison.

Jolly started 48 games for the Packers, including all 16 in 2008 and 2009, and recorded 77 tackles, two sacks, one interception and 17 pass deflections. He is eligible for parole after 14 months of his current sentence.

If you know it's a crime when you do it, you make a choice (am I willing to do the time, if I get caught).
Whether you like the sentence or not, he chose to self medicate...knew what could happen, and chose to do it anyway.
Help is out there to assist people (especially people with money), who want help. Apparently he did not...No crying...see ya in 14 months.

Six years for a non-violent crime, where the only person he's harming is himself? I don't agree with that sentence. Jolly is an addict, not a violent criminal who must be separated from society.

what a class act right here...he will do the 14 months and get released, then signed by another team.  Makes me sick to my stomach!

So a guy does prison time for dealing drugs, but when released he MAY or MAY NOT get a 2nd chance and that makes you sick to your stomach?? What would you suggest then?? Maybe just kill the guy so he never gets a chance at redemption right??

Never give anyone a chance at redemption right?? This isn't Nazi Germany, Communist China or Communist U.S.S.R. People get second chances in our country buddy.....

Some people may be more likely to get addicted than others, but everyone CHOOSES to start doing drugs....so stop trying to give the guy an excuse....

@conasty i think you dont realize how priveledged YOU are to not have a drug habit. Drugs do not discriminate between rich and poor, athletes or regular joes....the real problem is not that a pro athlete is having real life issues we all can relate to, but rather that he received a 7 YEAR PRISON SENTENCE for drug abuse. that is a travesty of our society and it is doubtful he will get the help he needs behind those bars, especially considering he didnt get the proper help while NOT behind them.

It's a horrible law but I don't know why you think it reeks of racism. Do you think only black people abuse codine?? I got news for you buddy.
