Packers defensive lineman Johnny Jolly -- currently suspended indefinitely by the NFL -- received a six-year prison sentence for violation of his probation on Thursday.

Jolly was charged with possession of codeine in October (in addition to tampering with evidence) -- the third drug arrest for Jolly in three years. His most recent arrest violated the parole that spared Jolly jail time stemming from a charge in April.

The defensive lineman has been featured in numerous media interviews leading up to his verdict, in which he essentially filed an emotional public plea for another chance.

However Jolly, drafted in the sixth round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Packers, has apparently run out of chances, at least for now. This is his final season under contract with the Packers and given his recent run of arrests, he may find it difficult to secure an early release from prison.

Jolly started 48 games for the Packers, including all 16 in 2008 and 2009, and recorded 77 tackles, two sacks, one interception and 17 pass deflections. He is eligible for parole after 14 months of his current sentence.

Johnny Jolly gets 6 years in prison

I agree with most on here. I am a law and order type of guy, but no way this guy needs to take up space in the slam. Six years??? While guys like Ray Lewis and Aqib Talib run free (granted he may still get his)!

The drug war is a crime against humanity.  We should lock up the people who lock up drug users.

It's a damn shame how the system works.  Prison, really?  Poor fella, if I were a god fearing man I'd pray for Johny.

I wholeheartedly agree.  It’s difficult to understand how we lack the resources to cover the cost of essential services like education, healthcare, and police/fire protection but we have money to imprison a non-violent codeine addict.  The man has already thrown away a promising and lucrative career in the NFL because of his addiction, does anyone really believe that time in prison is going to get him to change.  Provide Jolly with some treatment, pray for him, and send him on his way!

Johnny Jolly gets 6 years in prison

(MY PREVEIW DID NOT LOOK RIGHT, HOPE IT LOOKS OK AFTER POST, USING FF 9.0B)

Prison is NOT the place for this guy,

he needs help, there are too many players in pro sports using pain killers, and if you've seen stories on HBO or simailar, you would understand why, they are in constant pain, every day of their life, especially after their career ends.
The pain is unbearable for many, including myself.

Prison will only make it worse for this guy, you can get more drugs in prison than on the streets. Hopefully he does not go on to other drugs that are available in prison, and no I have never been in prison, but have been in L.A.  County Jail for Drunk driveing 25 yrs ago, and there was plenty drugs I could have taken.

He should have been given probation and entered into rehab by the courts.

Although I have never played FB,I have major problems with my right knee, and both feet, (work related from lifting heavy equipment) and sorry to say I am addicted to pain killers, it is the only way I can work, and make it thru the day, and no I don't fly an aircraft or anything that involves anyones safety, I work from home.

hopefully it works out for Jolly, and gets released soon, and help.

Just my opinion guys.

Big Blue True,  He chose to use codeine because it was what got him on the field on Sunday's. He has been using it before he even got into the NFL.  College trainers were giving it to him, pro trainers gave it to him and now he is hooked on it because of minor or major injuries he has sustained.

It isn't like some pusher came up to him in highschool and told him to "try this, it'll make you feel better than anything you've ever had before."

He isn't hooked on crack or heroin.

Sure he has messed up by violating his parole.  But 6 years?  Vick and Stallworth didn't get 6 years and they killed.

This dude is gonna be a mess when he gets out of prison.  Those are wasted tax payer dollars. This dude should be locked in rehab, not locked in the State Pen.
