Rex Ryan will face large fine

Rex Ryan doesn’t mind talking and he doesn’t mind talking back to the fans who he thinks are disrespecting him. In 2010, he was fined $50,000 by the NFL for shooting fans the finger at a UFC event, and at the time, he said, "It was stupid and inappropriate. I wouldn't accept that type of behavior from one of the coaches or players and it’s unacceptable from me. I apologize to the Jets organization, the National Football League and NFL fans everywhere."

Looks like Ryan didn’t learn his lesson.

As CBSSports.com’s Mike Freeman reported last week, Ryan will be fined by the league after he cursed at a fan during halftime of last week’s Jets-Patriots game.

As Ryan walked into the tunnel to exit the field, a fan yelled, “Hey Rex, Belichick is better than you.” Responded Ryan, “Shut the f--- up.” You can see that in this video right here -- obviously watch out for strong language.

As Freeman wrote, “The league despises this kind of behavior,” and it sounds like Ryan is going to face a substantial fine next week. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, that fine will be in the range of $75,000-$100,000.

Once again, Ryan was contrite afterward.

"I obviously made a mistake,” Ryan said. “I was full of emotion and just popped off. Obviously, I know I represent the NFL, I know I represent the Jets, and I know it was a mistake. I apologize for it. It’s who I am sometimes ... I’m about as big a competitor there is. At that time, I was in no mood to hear anything, but I also understand I have to handle that better.

But hey, Ryan wasn’t the only one vulgar one that day. At least he didn’t tell anybody, unlike Patriots coach Bill Belichick (reportedly), to s--- his d---.

I must have went back in time about 20 years or so for a few mins there.  Back when writers actually wrote articles with facts.
I don't recall writers ever doing that, 20 or even 30 years ago. Writers write for shock value and drama and they will use rumors and hearsay at every opportunity. It's just part of the game...

Who cares. Seriously, this is what the league hates so much? How about worrying more about the players behavior off the field. Dwi's domestic abuse, ....etc. The NFL has more violent off the field incidents then any other sport by far and they are making a big deal about cursing. It wasmt on the broadcast the idiot fan taped it.

Aw maybe you should get your facts straight, Belichick's conversation was a private conversation which is none of the media's business. If Belichick was wired for sound its one thing, but when a scummey reporter overhears a private conversation and puts it on the wire as if it was a public comment then the reporter was creating news vs. reporting news and should have his press pass (including access to the all you can eat media buffet) revoked, until he can pass journalism 101.

Why is it ok for fans to scream whatever they want at professional players and coaches?  The idea that buying a ticket gives you the freedom to say whatever is riduclous.  Do we stand outside a courtroom and heckle the judge, stand in line at a grocery store and scream at the checker?  In what other job is verbal harassment part of the deal.  I am suprised more coaches/players don't respond and the should be commended for not responding!  75-100k for this is ridiculous, the idiot fans who scream obsenities should be kicked out of the stands.

The fan didn't curse or swear at Rex Ryan. all he said was, "Belichick's better than you." Nothing wrong with that.

Dbunde , do you think football is supposed to be played in a monastery ???

Ryan cursed the fan and it was recorded on national television. He is supposed to be fined for that. The fan, on the other hand, did not do anything wrong.

I don't have any idea if he said it or not paytonb.  Don't really care all that much either.  I realize now when I think of most articles you read on just about anything.  Writers using hearsay isn't exactly uncommon.  More writers probably do it then don't actually.  I must have went back in time about 20 years or so for a few mins there.  Back when writers actually wrote articles with facts.

This country needs to wake up and realize it's the person who is offended by the word that's to blame, not the person saying it.  FREEDOM OF SPEECH...a word is nothing but a WORD...society is what draws the stigma...let's grow up, humanity...words are words...there are no "words of curse"...banning "curse" words is rediculously backwards and archaic....let's just wake up and stop throwing fits and fining people or worse for their WORDS and some WORDS make a stronger statement than others but they are still JUST WORDS...let's instead judge people by their actions and get our heads out of our ASSES.

Rex Ryan shouldn't be fined, he should be looked up to as someone not afraid to break away from old rules of etiquette (realize the word was probably originally banned by either a KING or POPE).  The reason our Nation's leaders suck is because we're so hung up on what they're SAYING that we're paying no attention to WHAT THEY'RE ACTUALLY DOING so nothing gets done.  Say what you want Rex, it's your 1st Amendment right because where do you draw the line?  If you say all offensive language is unallowable, and whether or not something is offensive varies from person to person, I'm sure every sentence on earth is offensive to someone so should we just do away with words, writing, and speaking altogether so no ones holier-than-thou ears are never tainted?

As for America...just keep pouring on the disappointment...I for one won't be surprised when we wake up one day to a harsh reality and realize American dominance is a thing of the past...if we keep going in this direction, caring about everying that DOESN'T MATTER, and completely ignoring everything that does.  USA!  USA!

Did you really just compare something someone actually got on tape for the whole world to hear.  To something that 1 Jets supporter "says" they heard Belichick?  Sorry a Jets fan "reportedly" hearing something bad from a rival team doesn't carry a whole lot of weight for me.
It's not exactly foreign ground for Beli to let loose with the language. If you truly don't believe he said it you are probably the only one.
