Texans place Matt Schaub on IR, sign Clemens

While there had been some hope, however slim, that Matt Schaub could return from his foot injury sometime this season and lead the Texans into the playoffs, that has been dashed.

As Rapid Reporter Brandon Williams writes, the Texans have placed Schaub on the season-ending IR list. Which obviously is devastating news for the Texans. Now, as CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman tweets, Houston's season has just been placed on IR as well.

Also, you can scratch off the Texans as potential suitors for newly-waived quarterback Kyle Orton. That’s because the team has signed former Jets quarterback Kellen Clemens to the squad.

At this point, it doesn’t appear Clemens will be competing with Matt Leinart for the No. 1 spot, abandoned by Schaub because of his season-ending injury. Instead, Clemens, a 2006 second-round pick of the Jets, will back up Leinart and rookie T.J. Yates.

As was pointed out Tuesday, Clemens tried out for the Texans on Monday along with Jeff Garcia, Trent Edwards and Brody Croyle, and they went with a quarterback who, at one point, seemed a potential alternative to Mark Sanchez in New York.

What this also means is that the Bears might have a better shot of claiming Orton off waivers -- teams will have until 4 p.m. today to make a claim. Since Houston and the Chiefs are in need of a quarterback and since both had priority over Chicago, one potential foil for the Bears is out of the running.

Which means we might really see Orton return to his old team to try to save the day.

They're gonna need all the help they can get. Leinart won't get the job done.

Sage Rosenfels was the man they should have targeted. He is familiar with the offense and also had success as a backup when Schaub was injured in the past.

Shame the team was doing well and had a chance to make somew noise in the post season. I hate to see success end on an injury

I think that Clemens is a legit QB.  And nobody has really given him a chance.  He can be a little bit hurried at times, so Kubiak will have to pull the reigns in at times.  But he has a nice supporting cast surrounding him in Arian Foster, Ben Tate, Andre Johnson, Jacoby Jones, and Owen Daniels.  He did not have that in New York.  I do not see Leinart staying in that starting spot for long.  He doesn't know how to win.  Clemens strikes me as more of a Trent Dilfer type QB.  May not be the most talented QB or put up huge stats, but dammit, he knows how to win.  And that's all that really matters.  However, I still would have gone after the veteral Kyle Orton.  Clemens is no stranger to the starter role, but he is a few seasons removed from it.  But I like his upside.

Jets should have signed Clemens. That said, who the hell writes these articles? Clemens was NEVER a potential alternative to Sanchez. The Jets completely dismissed Clemens altogether by drafting Sanchez and starting him from day one with only a charade of a "open competition" in training camp. So sick of these CBS "writers" penning articles containing complete bulls&!t, thinking no one is going to pick up on it.

I truly believe the Texans are primed to make a run at the superbowl. They've had a lot of adversity this year and has over come everything that has stood in there way.

They've been without the best running back in the league for several weeks. The best WR in the league for a month. They lost the best defensive player on the team for the season. They got stronger each time a teammate went down. Now the starting qb is out for the season

The games this team used to lose they are now winning. Now hopefully the cowboys can get there act together and we can see a Texas superbowl

Clemens is the perfect kind of QB the Texans needed to sign. He has some experience, but not a big enough name to make Matt Lienart nervous. So at least he knows now that this is his team, at least for the rest of the season.
Matt, you've been handed the keys to the kingdom, do the film work plus a little, and show eveybody that you do belong as an NFL QB! At least that's the hope. You've got the #1 defense in the league, and you have two great running backs. Now with the return of Andre Johnson, this is all set up for you to at least win the division.
