Chiefs claim Kyle Orton off waivers

Orton, Tebow

Posted by Josh Katzowitz

Kyle Orton and the Bears won’t be reunited after all. Rapid Reporter Bob Gretz has confirmed an ESPN report that the Chiefs have claimed him off waivers from the Broncos.

Which makes perfect sense for Kansas City. Considering Matt Cassel is out for the season and Tyler Palko wasn’t great (but not completely terrible) last Monday against the Patriots -- he went 24 for 37 for 230 yards, three interceptions and a 48.3 rating in a 34-3 loss -- the Chiefs obviously feel like Orton gives them a chance to compete for the AFC West title.

Where they’re competing against (surprise!) the Broncos for a potential division championship. The two squads will face each other Jan. 1 in Kansas City in a contest that could have major playoff implications, especially if Tim Tebow continues to lead Denver to wins and Orton can reinvigorate the Chiefs. Entering this week, the Raiders are 6-4 to lead the AFC West, but the Broncos are 5-5 and are followed by the 4-6 Chiefs and Chargers.

The Tebow, Orton eras begin ...
So, basically, the entire division is up for grabs.

For those who wonder if Orton would decline to travel to Kansas City to fulfill his obligations, I think you can safely close the door on those thoughts. Don’t you think he would vastly enjoy ruining the Broncos season for his new team’s own benefit?

Yet, that’s also what makes this transaction strange. The Broncos must have known there was an awfully good chance the Chiefs would claim Orton -- I mean, John Elway probably watched that Monday night game and saw what Palko means to that team , right? -- if they waived him. Since Orton will be a free agent after this season, there’s a decent chance he’ll sign elsewhere in the offseason, and that means the Chiefs could win a compensatory draft pick* if they lose him.

*Can you imagine if the Chiefs beat the Broncos, expose Tim Tebow, win the AFC West and THEN get a mid-round draft pick for him?

On the Denver side, Tebow, who knocked Orton out of the starting quarterback role, seemed happy for his former colleague.

"Congratulations to him,” Tebow said, via the Denver Post. “That’ll be fun to play him the last game of the year."

But won’t Orton have a big advantage in knowing what kind of offense the Broncos run and the signals they use? After all, Orton ran that offense for the first five games of the season.

"Obviously he knows it pretty well, so he could probably give away a few things,” Tebow said. “But I think we’ll be OK.”

The Bears and Cowboys also made waiver claims on Orton, meaning that even if the Chiefs didn’t win him, Orton would be traveling to Dallas now based on the waiver order. What’s interesting about the claim made by the Cowboys -- who obviously have a starting quarterback named Tony Romo but have a backup in Jon Kitna who has a balky back -- is that it smells like Dallas claimed him simply to block Chicago from getting him.

That’s because the two teams will battle for one of the NFC wild card spots, and the Cowboys know as well as anybody that Chicago would have a better chance of accomplishing that if it played Orton instead of Caleb Hanie.

Meanwhile, the Bears announced that Jay Cutler underwent thumb surgery Wednesday and should begin rehab “within the next few days.” Chicago will still have Hanie starting this week and the forseeable future, though the team also announced that it’s signed Josh McCown to a one-year deal Wednesday. Not quite as exciting as landing Orton. But it’s something, I suppose.

Nice pick-up by the Chiefs. KC plays hard, but they have been stagnet on offense, and his presence will give them some punch. He gives them a chance to turn things around and win right now. I think they (KC) will be much better because of this move, how much better will depend on the leadership Orton can bring to a young team that is hungry for a leader. Time is not an option, they need to start winning now. They (KC) went and got what they needed. I hope he does well, and kudos to the Bronco's for giving Orton the chance of being the starter for someone else. They won't win the Super Bowl, but Orton gives them the best chance to be a tough out on Sunday's..

That's not the same offense that Orton ran.  Orton ran an NFL offense, and Tebow is running an NCAA offense.

Chiefs claim Kyle Orton off waivers

I love how all the Chicago homers were on here yesterday saying how Orton would be wearing a Chicago uniform by tonight.  They sound as dumb as the Paties fans saying they will win the superbowl because they signed Fat Al and Ocho-stinko or Philly with their "Dream Team".

John Elway is smarter than a lot of people. He released Orton, which the Broncos were still on the hook for 2.1 million. Now that the Chiefs have picked him up, the Broncos don't have to pay him that money. From a financial point of view, a QB you weren't going to play or after this year, keep.
For the Chiefs, this could be a good move. A fairly well thought of QB. Recently he had been putting up some good numbers. But he has trouble in the red zone. Always has. So if you think that he's going to save your season, don't bet your house on it.
All of this talk about the Chiefs beating the Broncos or the other way around, doesn't mean anything. Neither team will make the playoffs, and even if that particular miracle happened, they would be one and done.
The best thing about this move is to see if Orton can challenge Cassel for the starting spot. For next year of course.

I think Orton needs to get a new agent....did he not watch the Monday night game?  The Chiefs are horrible and Orton will do nothing to change that.  He is at best a back-up on a team that needs quarterback depth.  The guy is mediocrity personified.  The Chiefs just realized that they couldn't finish the season with the stiff that started on Monday so they signed Orton to finish the season.  Orton will not be a Chief next season.  Perhaps a Raider, but not a Chief.

By the way, as much as I hate to say it, the Raiders are the best team by far in the AFC West.  The rest of the division is pretty poor.

I'm with you.  I've been an Orton fan since he was in college.  Not the greatest, but good enough to win.

Good move for Chiefs.  Orton will be way better than Cassel.  Orton will not have very many teams knocking on the door in free agency with the QB draft class coming out.  KC is a perfect fit for him.  He will make Bowe's numbers glow even more.  As a Bronco fan I am glad Elway did the class thing and let the man go play.  Players have a finite time in this league even though he went to a rival.  Not worried about the competition.  We know him as much as he knows us.  Even steven.  Here's the rub Chiefs fan.  He is the 2nd coming of Brian Griese.  That means... Great touch passer.  Kind of pouty and boring as a leader.  Doesn't lift the guys to a higher realm.  Doesn't fling the long ball that well but good enough.  Has a huge struggle with comebacks and 4th quarter victories.  Bronco's fans are used to Elways comeback drives.  We have missed that drug until Tebow has delivered as of late.  Although I agree that won't last long if Tebow doesn't learn real quick how to throw off his back foot instead of his front.  Good luck Kyle but glad to get you out of here.  You never had a chance to be resigned here with or without Tebow.  You know and we know it.

@,  think they get a draft pick if he signs with another team in the off season, thats like buying a free draft pick, no brainer . who said he is going to start? maybe he starts or matbe they let stanzi try to play and if he isnt ready then put orton in or they just go with orton to start and if he cant win then they switch it over.

In the event that Tebow either gets hurt or benched, does this open the door for Brady Quinn?? Brady has become the forgotten man everywhere he goes, and isnt ever mentioned even when all the Tebow hating was going on. The real question has got to be is Brady a bust? He doesnt even get an opportunity..
