Chiefs claim Kyle Orton off waivers

Orton, Tebow

Posted by Josh Katzowitz

Kyle Orton and the Bears won’t be reunited after all. Rapid Reporter Bob Gretz has confirmed an ESPN report that the Chiefs have claimed him off waivers from the Broncos.

Which makes perfect sense for Kansas City. Considering Matt Cassel is out for the season and Tyler Palko wasn’t great (but not completely terrible) last Monday against the Patriots -- he went 24 for 37 for 230 yards, three interceptions and a 48.3 rating in a 34-3 loss -- the Chiefs obviously feel like Orton gives them a chance to compete for the AFC West title.

Where they’re competing against (surprise!) the Broncos for a potential division championship. The two squads will face each other Jan. 1 in Kansas City in a contest that could have major playoff implications, especially if Tim Tebow continues to lead Denver to wins and Orton can reinvigorate the Chiefs. Entering this week, the Raiders are 6-4 to lead the AFC West, but the Broncos are 5-5 and are followed by the 4-6 Chiefs and Chargers.

The Tebow, Orton eras begin ...
So, basically, the entire division is up for grabs.

For those who wonder if Orton would decline to travel to Kansas City to fulfill his obligations, I think you can safely close the door on those thoughts. Don’t you think he would vastly enjoy ruining the Broncos season for his new team’s own benefit?

Yet, that’s also what makes this transaction strange. The Broncos must have known there was an awfully good chance the Chiefs would claim Orton -- I mean, John Elway probably watched that Monday night game and saw what Palko means to that team , right? -- if they waived him. Since Orton will be a free agent after this season, there’s a decent chance he’ll sign elsewhere in the offseason, and that means the Chiefs could win a compensatory draft pick* if they lose him.

*Can you imagine if the Chiefs beat the Broncos, expose Tim Tebow, win the AFC West and THEN get a mid-round draft pick for him?

On the Denver side, Tebow, who knocked Orton out of the starting quarterback role, seemed happy for his former colleague.

"Congratulations to him,” Tebow said, via the Denver Post. “That’ll be fun to play him the last game of the year."

But won’t Orton have a big advantage in knowing what kind of offense the Broncos run and the signals they use? After all, Orton ran that offense for the first five games of the season.

"Obviously he knows it pretty well, so he could probably give away a few things,” Tebow said. “But I think we’ll be OK.”

The Bears and Cowboys also made waiver claims on Orton, meaning that even if the Chiefs didn’t win him, Orton would be traveling to Dallas now based on the waiver order. What’s interesting about the claim made by the Cowboys -- who obviously have a starting quarterback named Tony Romo but have a backup in Jon Kitna who has a balky back -- is that it smells like Dallas claimed him simply to block Chicago from getting him.

That’s because the two teams will battle for one of the NFC wild card spots, and the Cowboys know as well as anybody that Chicago would have a better chance of accomplishing that if it played Orton instead of Caleb Hanie.

Meanwhile, the Bears announced that Jay Cutler underwent thumb surgery Wednesday and should begin rehab “within the next few days.” Chicago will still have Hanie starting this week and the forseeable future, though the team also announced that it’s signed Josh McCown to a one-year deal Wednesday. Not quite as exciting as landing Orton. But it’s something, I suppose.

Chiefs claim Kyle Orton off waivers

Good for them, now the Chiefs have a good QB.  We jumped the gun big time on this move.  Broncos are idiots.  Tebow will not last, so he has a few wins as a Bronco.  So did a guy named Josh McDaniels.  Any Bronco fans remember him?  So, when Tebow starts to stink it up, and he will, what is our back up plan?  Dumb move in my book.

Big Fred.  The Bears didn't get Orton because the Chiefs also claimed him, they had first dibs based on records.  Not a surprise, the Chiefs didn't have a QB also.  The Bears and Cowboys also put in Waivers for Orton.  The Bears did try for him but lost out.

Great pick up Chiefs!!!  Very surprised the Bears didn't get Orton.  I guess they feel Hanie can hold it down until Cutler returns.

Chiefs claim Kyle Orton off waivers - why??

I'm a Chiefs fan in Denver, and although I don't think Orton is all that bad, I don't think this move makes a whole lot of sense. Will orton play this week? no, Chiefs lose to Steelers, 4-7. Then Orton will start against the Bears, likely a loss, 4-8. Then he's got a chance against the Jets, let's say KC is now 5-8. KC then faces the Packers, a loss no matter who starts at QB. 5-9. Oakland and Denver the last two games are toss ups, but even if KC wins both, they're 7-9, no playoffs in sight. Best case scenario is 7-9. Likely scenario is 5-11.

So what is the point? Wouldn't you fellow Chiefs fans rather see what Ricky Stanzi has to offer, rather than suffer through vanilla gameplans against far superior teams that KC would lose anyway?

Again, Orton is not a terrible QB, and if we were in the playoff hunt I'd be ok with picking him up. Not now.

Also how much of Weiss's offensive terminology is still being used in KC . Both Josh Mcdaniels and Weiss use the same base and Orton was very good in that system . If the Chiefs still use a lotg of the same base terms Orton would pick it up the offense fairly quick .

I hate to say it being I hate Denver, but this is a good pickup.  Chiefs fans calling for Haley's firing are making a big mistake.  You wouldn't be able to find any coach out there who can do what Haley has done with this team.  They have won games they had no chance winning in the past without a really good defense.  We are still pretty young and building and with injuries, the growth is kind of stunted.  Unfortunately, this is a chalked up year.  I think healthy we had a shot at making the playoffs even with a difficult schedule, but without 2 very talented experienced players, no way.  I can tell you this, if we fire Haley, we will be one starting all over again and 2 needing the players to buy into a new coach.  Many times it can take years to find the right fit.  I think Haley is the right fit, but you have to give him time to build and I think they are on the cusp.  He had an excellent year last year and had a shot to do something this year with more experience, but things didn't go the way they planned.  It happens.  Hold off on the firing crap and give this guy a chance.  I think he has done an excellent job with Cassels limitations at getting wins.  I don't know many who could do better with a sub par young line.  It isn't like they have the Patriots line.

As a Broncos fan, thanks for the effort K O. You had to deal with some horrible crap while in Denver. Good luck with the rest of your career!

Chiefs claim Kyle Orton off waivers

way to generalize Chiefs fans dildo .... I've always hated Cassel and think Orton sucks a big one too, not happy about it but he's probably better than Palko.
LOL. Don't let 'em pigeonhole ya.

Last year, the Chiefs showed that all they needed was decent QB play to take the weak AFC West. Cassel hasn't given it to them, but Orton will. Unfortunately, it may be too little, too late, as it will take at least a month before Orton is even up to speed, and he'll still need to gel with his new team. I don't think that happens this year at all. If the Chiefs surge late and deide to keep Orton, I think Kansas City wins the division next year.

Yay Chiefs! Giving it everything they have to get another 50-0 first rd playoff aus whoopin.
The only way the Chiefs make the playoffs would be to win the division, and frankly, that's more than I think they expect, anyway.

Chiefs claim Kyle Orton off waivers

So let me get this straight...

Josh McDaniels comes to Denver.  Not happy with Jay Cutler, McDaniels makes inquiries about the availability Matt Cassel.  Meanwhile KC signs Cassel and then Jay Cutler acts like a little bitch and gets himself shipped of to Chicago in exchange for Orton.  Now Orton is going to KC to replace Cassel.  Cassel was injured in a game against Denver.

It is enough to make your head spin.
