It's been a busy day in the AFC South. The Jaguars fired head coach Jack Del Rio this morning, and by lunchtime, the Colts announced that they had relieved defensive coordinator Larry Coyer of his duties. Because, really, the defense was the primary reason the team is off to an 0-11 start.

“The move was made to improve communication and production,” Head Coach Jim Caldwell, via the team's web site. “We feel this is the most effective and realistic way to move forward and win games this season. We appreciate all of the effort and hard work Larry Coyer put forth in his three years with the Colts.”

We suspect that owner Jim Irsay will be issuing similar comments after the season when we learn that Caldwell has suffered the same fate as Coyer. For now, he's still in charge of a team that has a realistic chance to go winless in 2011.

Linebackers coach Mike Murphy has been assigned to replace Coyer.

In other Colts-related news, Caldwell has announced a new starting quarterback.

“Dan Orlovsky will (start this week at New England),” he said. “He’s been working at it and getting himself ready. … I think he’s a guy that certainly is comfortable within the framework of the system. I think he is a guy that’s also been around the league a while. He’s able to adjust and adapt to different systemic problems that you may have or see from a defense. He can adjust to those very easily. He has a nice, strong arm. We’re anticipating he’s going to be accurate as well, that’s key. The big is, obviously, to stay away from turnovers. He’s got to play smart and not scared."

It seems like a great opportunity for Orlovsky, who's probably best known for running unprovoked out of the back of the end zone when he played for the Lions during the 2008 season (Detroit, incidentally, went 0-16 that year). But the Colts' schedule shapes up like this the next two weeks: at New England, at Baltimore. If he survives that, Indy closes out against Tennessee, Houston and at Jacksonville.

I could not have said it better myself. True colts fans who understand football have known this team was a 3 win team without manning, winning 0 games is just bad coaching. The offensive line has been one of the worst for 4 or 5 years and nobody but freeny, mathis and beatha on our defense would start on another team. I hope when they fire caldwell they look at hiring someone like cowher who will draft big tough football players instead of little fast guys who somehow always seem to get burnt by other small fast guys and ran over by the rest.

Little Voices: Your a moron. There is NO WAY the Colts will just cut Manning. Now if he is still injured and retires thats a different story. But they will not cut him. Are you serious?

At least they got to know they have a darn good 4th stringer in Curtis Painter.

Does it really matter at this point? You couldn't hang on to the guy for 5 more games that you will lose anyway? This is an epic implosion from bad decision making and talent evaluating from the top down for about 5-6 years, ahem, Polian. Wow what a fall.

This is the perfect opportunity for the Colts to show the Packers how the changing of the guard should be handled.  For Andrew Luck to get adjusted to the speed of the NFL it will take a year or two and what better mentor than Peyton Manning.  Peyton plays Andrew learns and in 1-2 years passes the torch, unlike 1 more year Favre who insisted on staying and forcing the Packers to choose, looks like Rodgers was a good choice, Peyton will do this right and go out with class.

How about firing Caldwell? No way this team is winless just because Peyton isn't playing.

I love this comment.. Lol. Thumbs up, man. I couldn't agree enough about Orlovsky... hear comes the second team to have completed the perfect season. Don't worry, Lions, you will not be the only ones to go 0-16 in a season at the end of 2011.

I see that firing Coyer is going to erase years of very poor drafting by that mensa Bill Polian. His defense's have been horrible for the last ten years. All he wants to do is draft speed players on defense. He should have tried drafting actual football players. Instead of having a good defense, he has the fastest defense that can't play defense. That is on top of the fact that his Offensive linemen are also very poor players. He does have two or three good linemen. What have you been drafting these last 10 years? Oh that's right, WR's and DE's. Outside of Peyton, those are the only good players on the team.
So go ahead, fire Coyer, fire anybody you want. But the person to blame for this garbage of a team is Bill Polian.

What better way to go 0 - 16 than to bring in and start the QB who's been there and knows how to do it.

Also, those of you who think teams will give up draft picks for an injure prone, aging, late thirties QB must be dreaming. All interested teams will simply wait until the Colts cut Manning and THEY WILL CUT Manning, afterall would the Colts be stupid enough to pay a $28M roster bonus to a QB who is one hit away from never stepping onto a football field again? I Don't Think So, espacially considering how many needs they will have.
