It's been a busy day in the AFC South. The Jaguars fired head coach Jack Del Rio this morning, and by lunchtime, the Colts announced that they had relieved defensive coordinator Larry Coyer of his duties. Because, really, the defense was the primary reason the team is off to an 0-11 start.

“The move was made to improve communication and production,” Head Coach Jim Caldwell, via the team's web site. “We feel this is the most effective and realistic way to move forward and win games this season. We appreciate all of the effort and hard work Larry Coyer put forth in his three years with the Colts.”

We suspect that owner Jim Irsay will be issuing similar comments after the season when we learn that Caldwell has suffered the same fate as Coyer. For now, he's still in charge of a team that has a realistic chance to go winless in 2011.

Linebackers coach Mike Murphy has been assigned to replace Coyer.

In other Colts-related news, Caldwell has announced a new starting quarterback.

“Dan Orlovsky will (start this week at New England),” he said. “He’s been working at it and getting himself ready. … I think he’s a guy that certainly is comfortable within the framework of the system. I think he is a guy that’s also been around the league a while. He’s able to adjust and adapt to different systemic problems that you may have or see from a defense. He can adjust to those very easily. He has a nice, strong arm. We’re anticipating he’s going to be accurate as well, that’s key. The big is, obviously, to stay away from turnovers. He’s got to play smart and not scared."

It seems like a great opportunity for Orlovsky, who's probably best known for running unprovoked out of the back of the end zone when he played for the Lions during the 2008 season (Detroit, incidentally, went 0-16 that year). But the Colts' schedule shapes up like this the next two weeks: at New England, at Baltimore. If he survives that, Indy closes out against Tennessee, Houston and at Jacksonville.

I always hear about how great Bill Polian is, but, if he`s built a team that relies so much on one player, he must not be all that great. Seems like Polian should be getting ready for an address change, with this pityful record for the team.

Just shows how deep their problems are besides having no Peyton. The best excample would be when Brady got hurt, Matt Casell came in and the Pats still won 11 games becasue they didn't fall apart and get dispirited like the Colts apparently have, I believe if you have solid system in place, you can succeed even if the QB is just about average.

No way a GM overpays for Manning under the circumstances, unless they're desperate (a la New Orleans in 2006)...
Manning will need to prove (for a full season) the neck isn't an issue before a team will give up a slew of picks for him...

Only thing that will get the rebulild going would be trading a healthy Manning (and maybe Wayne, Freeney etc.) for a bunch of players and picks to build around Andrew Luck.  If the guy is the real deal it's a genius move.  Worth the risk.  Hard to see Manning doing too much if he returns to Indy and has to deal with all the rot around him.  He dereves better, send him to the Jets!

The main problem with the Colts' defense this season is the lack of an offense. How Larry Coyer was supposed to overcome that is anybody's guess.

What a nightmare season for a great franchise. I'm a Titans fan but even a fan of a divisional rival can't delight in this trainwreck of a season. That's not how the Titans (or Texans) ideally want to claim the AFC South title. We would rather beat a Peyton Manning-led Colts team.

You basically learned who is running the colts this year.  Caldwell isnt a coach, he is like Mike Brown was to LeStiff in the nba..he is just a baby sitter.  Manning runs that ship, they are almost assured oof getting Luck now so they are gonna act like they acre,They have been stiffing on purpose..Manning is done, he just needs soomeone to tell him...he wont play again..

Yuck.  One of two things has happened with the Colts.  I don't beleive they have a winless talent level so:  1)the coaching staff has lost the entire team 2)  the team is basically throwing games

Do they really think they're better with Orlovsky?  To me, it's just an attempt to make sure they secure the number 1 pick.

Good idea going with Dan Orlovsky. He has experience leading this type of team with their record.the Colts have a much better chance of running the table now.

Getting rid of Coyer was a good idea also. He couldn't cover or stop the run. Neither can the players he leaves behind, but you can't fire all of them. Hey, Irsay, good news!  Jack Del Rio is now available to run your defense.
