Donovan McNabb clears waivers, becomes free agent

Despite a glaring need at quarterback on a number of playoff contenders, no one claimed recently-released quarterback Donovan McNabb on Friday.

McNabb, who reportedly asked for his release after being demoted, was supposed to draw interest from someone, like the Bears (currently starting Caleb Hanie) or the Texans (currently starting T.J. Yates), but instead passed through waivers, which makes him an unrestricted free agent.

Quite obviously, the limited upside that McNabb offers just wasn't worth the downside of picking up the rest of the quarterback's contract with a waiver claim and/or dealing with bringing McNabb into a backup situation that he probably wouldn't be happy with anyway.

McNabb could still sign with someone as a free agent, but Chicago seems like the only truly viable option for him, what with Houston inking Jake Delhomme recently.

Which means that this may be the end of the road, at least for now, for McNabb, who's impromptu live appearance on ESPN Thursday night may be the best predictor of what he'll be doing in 2012. He's now been demoted by three different teams and benched for Kevin Kolb, Rex Grossman and Christian Ponder in the span of two years.

The same team that just cut him, Minnesota, claimed Sage Rosenfels to take McNabb's place. Houston seems willing to roll with Jake Delhomme as Yates backup rather than taking a flier on McNabb. In other words, you don't need shades to stare at McNabb's future on the football field.

But hey, on the bright side, it's not like the Redskins, Eagles and Vikings -- 10 wins between them this year! -- are having a bunch of success this year.

Time for McNabb to retire to the telecast booth, where throws wide of the mark are the rule rather than the exception.

The guy is an IDIOT! Suck it up buttercup and call it what it is. A day in the sun has come down on McNabb's career and he's the only one who still thinks it's high noon. Problem with that is that he is out of bullets and no one is offering anymore. I tell you what, I here there is this other guy out there who also thinks he is still "ALL THAT", you might have heard of him Donovan. His name is Terrell Owens. He plays Wide Receiver, maybe you two can sit on your couche's on sunday afternoon, turn on Madden, put your headsets on and have at it. Because that's the only way you 2 will be lining up anytime soon. SUCKA'S!!!!

Well I think he should just wait until Charlie Batch retires and come on over to the Steelers as a back-up. Well wait a minute I thought that Charlie had been in the NFL for like 18 years and he has only been in for 14 years, so we won't need Donovan for a few more years. I like Donovan McNabb he is a class act to me and I would love to have him as our back-up after Charlie Batch retires. I don't think Dennis Dixon will stay a lifetime back-up Quarterback he is just to good and young. Well good luck Donovan!

I've always liked McNabb because he has always handled himself with class. He has taken the high road with all his demotions and not been a distraction to the teams. He is well past his prime and the writing is on the wall. I hope he can read it so he can retire with dignity. It may be hard to let go but the way he has gone about it will tell him if he still has a future in the NFL.

What a shame McNabb still has something left in the tank and with the right system he would be fine and the texans and the bears are making big mistakes by not picking him up. There is no way TJ Yates is a better option then donovan McNabb. No way no how are even Jake Delholm either. The league is just a joke right now!

The black is a better athlete to begin with because he's been bred to be that way, because of his high thighs and big thighs that goes up
Bla bla bla ...

Let's not get started on race here. I, and millions of other white sports fans don't see color in athletes. Just the uniform being worn.

But if you want to bring it up ... what is the by far hardest position in sports? NFL quarterback.

How many dominant black quarterbacks are there in the league right now? Zero. How many have there been in history? None come to mind. How many white ones in history? The list is so long I wouldn't know where to start. How many in the league right now? Brady, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees ... and MANY other exceptionally good ones. How many black kickers and punters? Don't ever remember seeing one. But there are dominant white players at every position in every sport.

This is not being racist. I am simply pointing out facts.

I remember playing pickup basketball in boston parks with both black players and white players. Generally speaking, the black players were not as good as the white players. However, a small handfull of the black players were unstoppable. Therefore, I don't think that blacks are automatically better athletes than whites ... but the few good ones here and there can be dominant. This is why the "blacks are better athletes" saying is simply an easy to misunderstand myth.

Now that I've spoken my opinion, I don't really ever want to bring up race again.
I love the teams and players that I root for regardless of color or race.

Jimmy the Greek was right again

“ The black is a better athlete to begin with because he's been bred to be that way, because of his high thighs and big thighs that goes up into his back, and they can jump higher and run faster because of their bigger thighs and he's bred to be the better athlete because this goes back all the way to the Civil War when during the slave trade'n the big… the owner… the slave owner would, would, would, would breed his big black to his big woman so that he could have ah, ah big, ah big, ah big black kid see…

A mind is a terrible thing to waste
