Donovan McNabb clears waivers, becomes free agent

Despite a glaring need at quarterback on a number of playoff contenders, no one claimed recently-released quarterback Donovan McNabb on Friday.

McNabb, who reportedly asked for his release after being demoted, was supposed to draw interest from someone, like the Bears (currently starting Caleb Hanie) or the Texans (currently starting T.J. Yates), but instead passed through waivers, which makes him an unrestricted free agent.

Quite obviously, the limited upside that McNabb offers just wasn't worth the downside of picking up the rest of the quarterback's contract with a waiver claim and/or dealing with bringing McNabb into a backup situation that he probably wouldn't be happy with anyway.

McNabb could still sign with someone as a free agent, but Chicago seems like the only truly viable option for him, what with Houston inking Jake Delhomme recently.

Which means that this may be the end of the road, at least for now, for McNabb, who's impromptu live appearance on ESPN Thursday night may be the best predictor of what he'll be doing in 2012. He's now been demoted by three different teams and benched for Kevin Kolb, Rex Grossman and Christian Ponder in the span of two years.

The same team that just cut him, Minnesota, claimed Sage Rosenfels to take McNabb's place. Houston seems willing to roll with Jake Delhomme as Yates backup rather than taking a flier on McNabb. In other words, you don't need shades to stare at McNabb's future on the football field.

But hey, on the bright side, it's not like the Redskins, Eagles and Vikings -- 10 wins between them this year! -- are having a bunch of success this year.

Donovan McNabb clears waivers, becomes free agent

Once Brian Westbrook started to get hurt it exposed McNabb. He had no safety net to rely on to bail him out and m him look good. I think one fact lost in all this is how freakin good Westbrook was in his prime. Have a little self respect and bow out gracefully.......oh wait that time would have been 3 teams ago

Donovan McNabb clears waivers, becomes free agent

The bi g question is now which team he'll join.....CBS, ESPN or NBC?
I don't see any point of any other team taking a chance on him although Jake D just got a gig in Houston so who knows? McNabb just looked awful the last couple of years so I can't see it happening
He was better than what alot said of him but just never seemed to reach that elite level. Still had a better career than Ricky Williams so Philly be happy with what you got in that draft!

Please don't feel bad for McNabb. He made 100 million PLUS in his lifetime throwing screen passes, and puking when the heat was on. The guy had 1 good year. That's when T.O said "just try to overthrow me on every pass." After that, he tried to be accurate. Didn't work.

He couldn't run the offence in Philly because he was a lazy and stupid to boot. The Eagles did the right thing when they dumped Low Throw McBlow. Retire you fool!

I would be shocked if Donovan McNabb signed on anywhere. I believe his playing days are over. His skills have declined to a point where even if you surround him with a great team he will not be able to consistently produce. It is not like Randal Cunningham who had the skills to have a great season with the Vikings. I do not see that happening.

I wish him well.

Any caucasian that disses Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick and Cam Newton is just racist, plain and simple. You are just jealous that a young African American man makes more money than you.

Now we know why your reputation level is a 0.

"DEEZ NUTZ 4 YOU"????

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

You sound like an idiot, you know that?

We know you are already an ass clown because you are an Eagles fan.

Now you are bringing race into the conversation????

Go back to the 1800's where these comments make any sense.

What would you say if I came on here and said: "Any African American that disses Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Drew Brees is a racist. You are just jealous that your poor and these guys make money!" Would that piss you off?

If your three African Americans (McNabb, Vick, and Newton) learned to THROW a football better rather than running all over the field trying to be Barry Sanders, they might have the Superbowl rings that my slow, caucasian quarterbacks have.

Leave race out of this, man. No one wants to hear Black/White crap on here.

Glad I could help you out.

He hasn't played like the stud he was for some time now. He didn't and wasn't a part of any teams rebirth (Washington, Minnesota) since leaving Philly. If your a possible play-off team who needs a QB, why take someone you have watched for 2 years slowly sink? You would rather take a chance on someone who doesn't have a contract and that you havn't watch sink under preasure. It's all in the article, all the facts.
