Donovan McNabb clears waivers, becomes free agent

Despite a glaring need at quarterback on a number of playoff contenders, no one claimed recently-released quarterback Donovan McNabb on Friday.

McNabb, who reportedly asked for his release after being demoted, was supposed to draw interest from someone, like the Bears (currently starting Caleb Hanie) or the Texans (currently starting T.J. Yates), but instead passed through waivers, which makes him an unrestricted free agent.

Quite obviously, the limited upside that McNabb offers just wasn't worth the downside of picking up the rest of the quarterback's contract with a waiver claim and/or dealing with bringing McNabb into a backup situation that he probably wouldn't be happy with anyway.

McNabb could still sign with someone as a free agent, but Chicago seems like the only truly viable option for him, what with Houston inking Jake Delhomme recently.

Which means that this may be the end of the road, at least for now, for McNabb, who's impromptu live appearance on ESPN Thursday night may be the best predictor of what he'll be doing in 2012. He's now been demoted by three different teams and benched for Kevin Kolb, Rex Grossman and Christian Ponder in the span of two years.

The same team that just cut him, Minnesota, claimed Sage Rosenfels to take McNabb's place. Houston seems willing to roll with Jake Delhomme as Yates backup rather than taking a flier on McNabb. In other words, you don't need shades to stare at McNabb's future on the football field.

But hey, on the bright side, it's not like the Redskins, Eagles and Vikings -- 10 wins between them this year! -- are having a bunch of success this year.

I don't get why there is so much focus on the past.  We all probably remember with varying degrees of accuracy how good we used to be at different things.  The whole point is, regardless of the reason, be it laziness, age, or an inherent lack of ability, nobody believes this guy can make a substantial contribution to their team winning games TODAY!!!

On ode to Donovan Mcnabb, to whom many thought was great.  He could pass a ball, run like the wind and has the charisma of a chevy luv truck...He hangs around the field seeing memories of years gone by, still blind to the reality he is no longer that new small of a new car,..he is one who some have tried to restore to it's former glory and shine....but try as they might, he is like the story of humpty dumpty, and so no of the kings men from seperate kingdoms could not put him together again.  His tale should be now, be that of a cowboy who has fought a good fight and now rides off into the sunset, no more to be the gun slinger with the fastest draw, slowed by age, but yet in his own mind, his greatness will always be his...still thinking when he is old and gray, saying "I can still get out there and make a difference....but maybe that thinking needs to be channeled to that of an advisor, one who share his knowledge of the game, teach those who would become a Donovan Mcnabb clone...and thus carry on the legend of the gunslinger who one graced the fields of the NFL realm doing battles on Sundays, trying to earn the trip play for the coveted championship, setting them apart as the greatest, if not only for that year, but also enshrining them in history books for all time and maybe even a triva game question.

Hat's off to Mcnabb....thanks for playing the game, making it exciting...but now the time to say good bye.
