Donovan McNabb clears waivers, becomes free agent

Despite a glaring need at quarterback on a number of playoff contenders, no one claimed recently-released quarterback Donovan McNabb on Friday.

McNabb, who reportedly asked for his release after being demoted, was supposed to draw interest from someone, like the Bears (currently starting Caleb Hanie) or the Texans (currently starting T.J. Yates), but instead passed through waivers, which makes him an unrestricted free agent.

Quite obviously, the limited upside that McNabb offers just wasn't worth the downside of picking up the rest of the quarterback's contract with a waiver claim and/or dealing with bringing McNabb into a backup situation that he probably wouldn't be happy with anyway.

McNabb could still sign with someone as a free agent, but Chicago seems like the only truly viable option for him, what with Houston inking Jake Delhomme recently.

Which means that this may be the end of the road, at least for now, for McNabb, who's impromptu live appearance on ESPN Thursday night may be the best predictor of what he'll be doing in 2012. He's now been demoted by three different teams and benched for Kevin Kolb, Rex Grossman and Christian Ponder in the span of two years.

The same team that just cut him, Minnesota, claimed Sage Rosenfels to take McNabb's place. Houston seems willing to roll with Jake Delhomme as Yates backup rather than taking a flier on McNabb. In other words, you don't need shades to stare at McNabb's future on the football field.

But hey, on the bright side, it's not like the Redskins, Eagles and Vikings -- 10 wins between them this year! -- are having a bunch of success this year.

Donovan McNabb clears waivers, becomes free agent

I hear the lingerie Football League needs some players....   He just needs to have a sex change and he should be good to go.  He might get waived though because he only has a C cup bra size.

The NFC CG against the Cards is a perfect example.  Everyone will say, he had a great game, just look at his stat line.  The bottom line is Warner (the dictionary definition of clutch QBs) drove his team down the field to get the lead late in the game, and McNabb did not.  McNabb is the Mike Vanderjagt of QBs.
Yeah, you're right.  It was Donovan McNabb's fault that Kurt Warner drove the length of the field in the NFC CG.  I believe he was covering Anquan Boldin most of  the game.  Or was he rushing the passer?  I forget which.  Bottom line is once again Mcnabb had the Eagles in a position to win (which he often did btw) and the rest of the team failed him.

People act like this guy was supposed to be perfect all the time.  He had A LOT MORE positive plays in his ten-plus year career than negatives.  he was in his prime better than 90% of the quarterbacks in the league when he played. Yeah it was McNabb's fault it took them getting T.O. who he was on the downside of his career for them to make the Super Bowl.  He had crappy receivers his entire stay in Philadelphia.

I love how people want to re-write history as if I didn't watch it or wasn't there.  The Eagles always had a great defense, running game, and McNabb at QB.  What they didn't have was quality help in the passing game FOR YEARS.  If the Bears are willing to roll with Hanie in pursuit of the playoffs and further, then more power to them.  Godspeed.  But I think they are going to live to regret not taking McNabb up on his availability.  I mean it's not like you are asking McNabb to turn back the clock.

With Forte as one of the premiere runners in the game, he wouldn't have to be slinging it all over the place.  Chicago has one of the best defensive units in the game.  Their receivers  aren't great either (but Cutler and Orton and Grossman always got a pass or took most of the blame, depending on who you ask).  but Donovan could make them better.  The Bears offense is far from complicated compared to what he ran in Philadelphia.

I would take a chance on that guy for a whole what, two months?  I think surely he could perform to that level for that span with the incentive of possible Super Bowl appearance.  He had zero motivation, coaches backing or happiness in Washington or Minnesota.  He would be going home to possibly finish his career.  Guess what, the Bears could now sign him since he went through waivers to a more suitable contract I believe.  Don't be surprised if he isn't penned in a few days, especially after Sunday's possible implosion on offense.

Even a blind squirrel can find a nut sometimes. Lets seriously not attempt to laud the supposed "genius" of Rush Limbaugh. If he was such a football expert people would be beating his door down for his football opinions. Without looking $1000 says he thinks Tebow is great and is so picked on

He just clowns around too much, and when a player gets older losing speed & reflex you just can't get away w/ it anymore.

And when was the last time you saw McNabb on the sidelines during a game, looking at photos of the other teams defense.

He spent plenty of time looking at photos on the sideline, even after he was benched.

McNabb is definately finished.  Was when the Eagles traded him.

His biggest problem is that he clearly wasn't a clutch performer.  His stats seemed to indicate he was good, but he often failed at key times.

Don't forget to add Joe Webb to that list as the Vikings had made McNabb 3rd string
