Tim Tebow triggered $472K playing-time bonus

By Will Brinson

Tim Tebow's played well as a starter for the Broncos (or, if you prefer: Tim Tebow has won games as a starter for the Broncos), but it appears "just playing" was enough to make his wallet a lot bit fatter.

According to The Denver Post, Tebow's now crossed the threshold to trigger a playing-time bonus that pays him an extra $472,500 on his rookie contract.

As we noted yesterday in pro-rating Tebow's stats, he's nearly at eight full games, what with his seven starts, half of another game and some plays in the "Tebow package." That puts him well over the 45 percent needed to unlock the bonus.

If you want to get really technical about it, Tebow's now at 46.9 percent of Denver's snaps, per Mike Klis of The Post.

Whatever it is, though, Denver probably doesn't care. Half a million bucks is a ton of cash, of course, but the resurgence Tebow's given the Broncos with his play (they're 6-1 since he took over, obviously) outweighs the bonus they'll pay him at the end of the season.

And that doesn't count merchandise sales and all the other things that come with going from 1-4 to a potential No. 4 seed in the NFL playoffs.

Maybe he should ask for more.

Tim Tebows not gay.  If he is who cares but all the ladies that can't have him.  The gay QB in the league is Mark Sanchez anyway.

Dude aint gay he was in GQ.. since they cant say he sux since he has a better win percentage then  most Qb's in the league this season. he may actually make the pro bowl.. if for one winute you think he is gay then u need to ask yourself y u think he is gay? is he gay cause you like the way he talks? cause you like how he wins games.. i was always told take one to know one.. i think u people on here bashing him want to oil his back lol.. give the man a break.. he is told he wont make it to nfl.. makes it. told he wont win..  all he does is win.. say he cant throw my man goes 10/15 for his last game..  now they say he is gay.. how do u prove that wrong? easy since Kim Kardashian is getting divorced.. he can make a show with her..  and then prove everyone wrong again.. then it will be he caint win a super bowl..

I dont know why people hold elway in such high regards.. took him 16 years to win a bowl and he didnt win it the d and Terrell Davis won..  Elway wasnt the best and he had kind of a sloppy game..  he at times had to bring teams back from 4th QRT loses because he made that hole.. i think he is just mad that he didnt get to draft the QB he wanted since he became GM.. cmon man brady quinn? u drop orton when u could have got a pick from miami from all because he hoped Tebow failed

Tim Tebow triggered $472K playing-time bonus

Tim Tebow is a great story for the NFL and especially the Denver Bronco's..

I do need to ask this question though.....Where does all of the gay commentary come from?  Is it just because the guy lives his life outwardly as a Christian that he automatically gets labeled as gay?  Just because the way the guys talks (calm and well spoken) that he gets this label?  Oh, it must be the fact that he is man enough to admit he is a virgin and is waiting for the woman he marries, that makes him gay?

I'll tell you what.  I was a big homophobic jock in high school, but that was 25 years ago.  If Tim Tebow is gay, so be it.  He lives his life in a way that helps poor people all over the world, was instilled great morals and values from his family, and is a hell of a football player.

If he is gay (which I do not believe), it would still be ok with me.  I am rooting for this guy, just becuase I like his style.

Go Tebow and yes, GOD BLESS YOU!

Gays are no more sinners than you and me are, all sins are just what they are: sins.

Tim Tebow triggered $472K playing-time bonus

I agree 100% BuckManster. If Tim Tebow was told that Denver could not pay his salary due to financial problems ,I believe he would still play and give the 200% he is giving now. Here is a man that loves the game so much, money is only secondary.

Tim Tebow triggered $472K playing-time bonus

Try to save the exclamation points for when you are actually on to something.  As the article says, he's got seven complete games, most of eigth, and a number of plays from the Tebow package prior to starting.  That is half of the season already under his belt.  There are only 16 games in the NFL by the way.  And he only needs to see 45% of the snaps for the season.

I suppose you will argue that he could go down in practice before Sunday and that the new bronco offense will run 80 plays a game compared to the 50 something per game they run now.  Mathematically, you would be correct, it's possible..but it's still a goofy argument and so unlikely as to be ridiculous.
You really nailed those sports journalists on this one though.

Tim Tebow triggered $472K playing-time bonus

The mystery here is whether the contract states playing time as the critical factor, or the number of snaps.  He needed 45% of the magic metric to get his bonus.  Time-wise he's over 45% already, and the assumption inherent in this and the post article is that the average number of snaps per minute will be roughly the same for the beginning and end of the season.

My appraisal is that that's not a logical assumption, since running plays take much more time off the clock than passing plays and under Orton we had more passing plays.  Not to mention that Tebow's passing plays often are slower to develop than Orton's.

With that said, it's very unlikely that Tebow will be replaced for the entire remainder of the season, thus it's very unlikely that he will end up in the gap where those two numbers disagree.  He's been a solid investment for Denver, not just financially but also energy-wise.  A reinvigorated fan base (and players) is always a great thing, and there's no denying he's helped with that - along with the return of Doom, the smashing performance of Von Miller and the continued leadership of Champ, Dawkins etc.
