Trent Cole fined $7.5K for flipping Russell Okung

Seahawks left tackle Russell Okung suffered a season-ending injury -- a torn pectoral muscle, specifically -- in the final minutes of last Thursday's loss to Philadelphia.

As we noted at the time, Okung was injured when he was unnecessarily thrown over Trent Cole's shoulder away from the play, after the whistle.

The NFL agreed with our assessment that Cole should be fined and according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the league fined the Eagles defensive end $7,500 for the play.

"I'm not a dirty player," Cole said Wednesday. "At the time, all the stuff that led up to that, there was a lot of stuff that happened in that game. ... Watch that game closely and key on Okung and key on me and you'll see what I'm talking about."

At the time of the play, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll disagreed with Cole's notion, pointing out nicely that he didn't think the injury should have happened, because the take down was unnecessary.

"I heard his comments," Cole said of the Seahawks coach. "You all seen what happened. The guy was on my back after the whistle. He was holding me the whole game. If you look at that play he had me hooked. I'm running to the ball and he had me hooked."

In the screenshot to your right, Cole and Okung (bottom left) aren't anywhere near the play (top right). And the ballcarrier is clearly on the ground while Okung's being flipped, meaning Cole's excuse for the specific play doesn't really make a lot of sense.

While the $7,500 fine stings Cole in his wallet, it doesn't hurt him nearly as much as the loss of Okung will hurt the Seahawks who, at 5-7, aren't technically eliminated from the playoff race yet.

Though if Okung's injury has a hugely negative impact on Marshawn Lynch's revived season, that will change quickly.

You seattle guys need to quitwhining, or did you miss one of your own suplexing Jerome Simpson of Cincinnatti? What Cole did was wrong, but nothing that doesn't happen every week. What your boy did was patently illegal and it's not like he was being held on teh play. It was just a pure dirty play becuase he was burned. Here is the link

Hard to believe an arm toss ended the guys season with a torn muscle, tough break, but doesn't this kind of stuff happen all the time during the game, whistle blows, but guys are still blocking each other and shoving?  Obviously Cole is int he wrong, but Okung seems to still be shoving Cole in the back after the whistle.

If that screenshot is the evidence, I'd like to point out that the player standing behind the Seahawks Williams (17) is #58, which would be Trent Cole ? I mean I can make out #98 Patterson, #94 Landri, #58 Cole and an unknown Eagle in the pile. More inclined to think it's Brandon Graham # 54 that appears to be flipping the Seahawks player # 76 Okung in the lower left hand corner ? Okung's # 7 of his jersey is obvious, but the only way the 6 can be determined is because Okung comes away with the season ending injury being flipped over the back of that Eagles player.

Suh's action while heinous did not end anyone's season.
Speaking about Suh, and the Lions in general. Burleson already reported to get fined $7,500. The same as Cole for a facemask penality. Cole's judo flip is basically the same as a facemask penality. As the NFL sees it anyway.

Also, Pettigrew and Young could also be fined, probably will, but we won't know any specifics until Friday. Probably in the same range if not more.

The NFL fining mechnicism is inconsistant, at best. Blatant fining of certain players (teams), at worst.

By the way, just to put this in perspective. While, arguably justified, (I'm not debating whether it is or isn't) Suh lost 2 gamechecks while on suspension. Those total $168,000.

If Cole was fined $7,500. Well, I'm sure many can reach their own conculsions.

I did the math on the 7,500 and Cole's base salary listed on the Eagles website of 2,900,000.  It comes out to about .002 of his base. The equivalent of a parking ticket.  The NFL's administration of punishment is all over the place.  This action ended a man's season so it was given this "fine" that Cole probably pulled out of his couch cushions.  Suh's action while heinous did not end anyone's season.

Oh, that is okay then right? NO!
$7,500 fine stings Cole in his wallet, it doesn't hurt him nearly as much as the loss of Okung will hurt the Seahawks
So it was worth it then right Eagles fans?  Pathetic. Watch out for the stairs in the morning, they might not be dirty but karma is a COLE

oH that's all he did? What was it that Vick was cyring about?
So now Phillys DREAM TEAM employs a cheap shot, malicious bastared and the league not only supports that by not even suspending him, but the Eagles also employ a man who murdered dogs by drowning them in buckets of water and hanging them from trees and shocking them  to death and tries to act smooth. That is the representation of the Eagles franchise eagles fans. Enjoy that brotherly love! What a city. I hope when the Eagles go to Seattle on Thursday night that they get owned. Oh wait, that happened.

This fine is crap! The dude was getting owned and decides on a cheap shot. Worse than the Suh incident (It ended an NFL Starting lef tackles season) in my opinion. This guy is allowed to play? Where is the suspension? How is he not fined at least a couple game checks? WOW How cowardly. This guy is not anything but a little punk. He didn't get a legit punishment and I hope if you disagree he injures your favorite player for the rest of the season AFTER THE PLAY IS OVER and has to shell out a fine of a whopping 7.5k.
PATHETIC!
