Kyle Orton is Romeo Crennel's starting QB

Chiefs interim coach Romeo Crennel made big-time news earlier this week when he announced Tyler Palko was Kansas City’s brand-new third-string quarterback and said that if Kyle Orton’s broken finger allowed him to play, he would start. Otherwise, rookie Ricky Stanzi, who has been panned almost universally for his practice performances this year, would get the go-ahead.

Luckily for the Chiefs, Crennel (via Rapid Reporter Bob Gretz) has seen enough progress from Orton this week to announce Friday that Orton indeed will be the No. 1 quarterback heading into Sunday’s Packers game.

From Denver to KC
“Kyle did a nice job and it looks like he’s throwing better and so we are going to start him in the game," Crennel said.

If the Chiefs want any kind of chance to beat the Packers at home, Orton and not Stanzi has to be the one to start. The biggest concern entering the week for the Chiefs was whether Orton continued to have problems gripping the ball with his injured finger. But on Friday, Orton practiced without wearing the glove he’d worn all week to protect his index finger.

Orton apparently has not had a problem taking the snap from the center either.

“The ball has not been on the ground at all this week, so that’s a good sign,” Crennel said.

After the Chiefs generated buzz by signing Orton when the Broncos waived him -- at that point, Kansas City wasn’t quite out of the race in the AFC West, and it seemed like a necessary move if the Chiefs were going to defend their division title -- Orton got hurt on the first play of his Chiefs career.

Palko, with a 1-3 record as a starter, clearly isn’t the answer at quarterback, and considering former coach Todd Haley isn’t around any longer to try to save his job, Crennel obviously would rather have an Orton that might not be 100 percent rather than a Palko who is.

Kyle Orton is Romeo Crennel's starting QB

If he was not playing against my beloved Packers, I'd wish him luck.  He has had a tough and wierd season.  But as someone pointed out, his career numbers are not that bad.  He just seems to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.  Next Sunday, I hope he throws 5 TD's and no pics.  This Sunday just the opposite!   Go Pack!

Kyle Orton is no doubt a better Qb than Tyler Palko. Tyler Palko might not even be backup QB in this league. That being said, the Chiefs have virtually no running game with Charles being out for the year so you know  the Packers are not going to try and get after Orton. Losing your Qb, Rb and your best defensive player in one year is a bit to overcome.

It seems we call anyone that is not fantastic, bad. I hear it all the time on the radio where any team that isn't in the top 5 are just bad. Any quarterback that isn't Brees, Brady, Rodgers, or Romo is just bad.

Orton played in 34 games for Denver.
720 Completions
1194 Attempts
60.3% Completion Rate
8,434 Yards
49 TDs
28 INTs
72 Sacks
QB Rating about 86-87.

Palko played in 6 games for the Chiefs this year.

80 Completions
134 Attempts
59.7% Completion Rate
796 Yards
2 TDs
7 INTs
11 Sacks
QB Rating of 59.8

I think most of negative coming out of Denver was this season, not so much last, and it almost all revolced around the fans and media wanting to see Tebow play. I'm hoping that now that Orton is out from under the hate showered on him for not being Tebow, he will be able to get back to form and help the Chiefs.

Orton is no better than Palko.  Look at how bad Orton was at Denver.
Huh? You mean how he led the league in passing for most of 2010 despite having a running game and a defense that ranks at or near dead last in nearly every statistical category? Or how he led 4th quarter comeback after 4th quarter comeback, often getting the rug yanked out from under him by a D that couldn't stop anybody, and despite this, he still beat the Bengals, Cowboys, Titans, Patriots, etc on game-winning 4th quarter comeback drives? Or was he bad during the only time Denver's D played anything like they are now, when he went 6-0 with a 101 passer rating because opponents didn't play the pass exclusively, knowing the running game would go nowhere and the D couldn't stop anyone?

Or was the last 2 years of being the lone bright spot on a horrible team wiped out when he struggled along with the rest of the team for 4 games while they tried to work the kinks out o the new offense, defense, Head Coach, OC and DC - and despite this, he had a great day against a stiff Bengals D, and he threw more TDs than INTs on the year?

Where was he no better than Palko again?

At the beginning of this year, though, he just couldn't get it done.
True. The entire Denver team struggled early on with the new offense and defense, and Orton was uncharateristically prone to turnovers. At 1-4 the Broncos seemed to decide the season was over and put in the one guy that had signed beyond 2011. Luckily for Denver, everything seemed t come together within 2-3 weeks of each other: The running game, the defense, the offense rettoled to suit Tebow's skillset - whammo. 7-1. That's got to get Denver fans jazzed.

In the meantime, I don't think it will matter if Orton throws for 400 yards and 4 TDs; the Chiefs are going to lose. I rather expect about half those numbers, as Orton hasn't had much of a chance to practice or play with his broken finger. It will be a bad day for KC's new starter.

Tyler Palko was the worst quarterback in the history of the league.   Starting him was a death sentence for Haley. Crennel should just cut him.

Kyle Orton is Romeo Crennel's starting QB

Kyle Orton did look good for the Broncos right after he came over to them, and the collapse that followed didn't seem to be his fault.  At the beginning of this year, though, he just couldn't get it done.  When the Broncos finally benched him, they were 1-4.  Since then, Tim Tebow has the Broncos 7-1.  The Broncos really didn't need Orton any more, and they cut him loose.  Orton gets a chance to show what he can do with the Chiefs.  If he gives them any passing game at all, he'll be an upgrade from Tyler Palko.

Orton is the Chiefs best option right now. He can at least read a defense. The Chiefs suffered too many key injuries on offense to sustain drives this year. Their defense has been decent despite their record. But you can't keep a defense out there all game long. I don't think Orton is their savior, but he should at least prevent a game full of three and outs.  Crennel can't really lose in this situation by playing Orton or Stanzi. Just making a change  should pacify the fans for now.

I could not figure out why Haley was sticking with Palco, when he looked so lost out there. Haley must hae been trying to get even with them. Grow a beard, wear grubby clothes, be his normal smart-elec self. Little Todd  was showing those mean guys that didnt like him. This time they need to hire a grown man. They need to hire a football person. It is to much to hope they won't hire somebody that used to be with the Patriots. Just like Peterson and those San Francisco rejects. Pioli needs to branch out, hire somebody that was not  his best friend.
