Jeremy Shockey played a big role in Carolina's 28-13 victory over the Texans in Reliant Stadium on Sunday, catching a 9-yard touchdown pass. But he made more noise after the game, when Shockey ripped members of the Texans for not showing respect to the National Anthem.

Well, at least in Shockey's opinion anyway -- the Panthers tight end apparently didn't feel like some of the players should've had their hands on by their sides.

"Myself, I was pretty upset they weren't showing respect to America during the national anthem," Shockey said per Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer. "There were about 10 players who didn't put their arms across their chests.  This is America. They should at least give respect to America. Maybe they just forgot to do it or something. I don't see how you can forget something like that."

Um, OK? That's just weird, right?

It's not like the Texans players turned the opposite way as the anthem was being sung. And it's not like they waved British flags while the music was playing.

They simply stood there without putting their hand on their hearts. Good for Shockey if he's able to use it as motivation later during the game, but there's really no reason to rant about it -- unprovoked -- to reporters afterwards.

For what it's worth, Shockey took to Twitter after the game to apologize, so clearly he feels bad about the comments.

"Respect" for the flag and the National Anthem would mean not trotting it out every ten minutes.

I remember when the flag flew at Federal buildings and schools, not every car dealership and drug store on the street. And I remember when, if it rained, someone took the flag in.

Did you know that, in the 60s, when they started putting the flag on police and fightfighter uniforms, a lot of cops and firemen objected because they aren't feds, and the veterans objected even more because cops and firemen aren't soldiers? True story. People respected the flag then.

Now the flag is like Linus's security blanket -- flag in one hand, thumb in the mouth, eyes closed, insecure Americans need something to cling to because they can't hack the responsibility of being a truly free people. So they sit there watching to see if people are standing right and they run to denounce them as traitors if they don't.

I'm grateful to those who have sacrificed to preserve our freedom. But that includes the freedom to stand with our hands at our sides or in our pockets or anywhere we'd like. Freedom means ... guess what? ... freedom.

while I think the comment of dissrespect toward our country and each other is true  ("Hey old man--- STFU!" typical example of disrespect ) I also
Read that the texans gave a war widow a new Home in honor of Her husband.. something I think any team could do to be honest..I have no
respect for those who pander hate and dissrespect That take the liberty of  anonymity to hurl insults..that is the true proof of the decline
of America. So many excuses for your own failings.Blame yourself and stop hating those who have  courage to speak up and step up
and support the Vets and their families America

Guess Shickey needs something to get all jacked up about before going to play a football game.  Whatever works, Shockey.

As for the story?  I bet every game has a few folks who don't do such.  I know for a fact, many fans aren't "participating".  Why not call them out.?

In reality, this is a story only because it is being ran with in the media.  If every game played, there was someone whose job it was is to captur those who are not participating in the "proper" way to honor the moment when the National Anthem is palying, it wold be an album of pictures for every game.  Yes, guess what, not everyone does everything proper.  It is a reality, folks.

Do I stand and give proper allegiance to my flag and the National Anthem?  Absolutely.  Do I shake my head at some folks who are too busy chatting on their phone, taking pictures, or drinking their beer?  To a degree.  But I don't let it affect me.

Wonder what Shockey does this week to get all jacked up?

Shockey: Texans didn't 'give respect' to anthem

It is sad to hear the NEW GENERATION refer to as thier free nation now. I proudly fought for this country and almost made the ultimate sacrifice but by the grace of God I was saved, so don't tell me it's your new free nation now. Yes it your country but I have EARNED the right to express my opinion!

Shockey: Texans didn't 'give respect' to anthem

After reading every one of the posts concerning Shockey: Texans didn't 'give respect' to anthem and the standing at attention and placing the hand over the heart for OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM and the FLAG OF OUR COUNTRY, I cannot believe at the state of our Education and disrespect that has been ingrained into our young people by the Educators over the last 20-30 years. Is it any wonder our country is in such a decline from our values as Americans? The young people of today do not even act like Americans – they act like foreigners to me – it’s as if we have become another country in just 30 years! Our generation use to sing our National Anthem at Football Games WITH PRIDE. From FRANKLIN FIELD in Philadelphia to Boston, Atlanta, and all over the Country and with extreme pride… now today, with these remarks how sad and it is disturbing what has happened to my/ our Country? What a disappointment to read such remarks – how pitiful they are and the legacy they reveal that this NEW GENERATION has nothing to offer our country what-so-ever.Frown

Hey old man--- STFU!

Learn a little history, it was YOUR generation that started running this country into the f'n ground. It was you and your generation of people who consumed anything and everything in sight with an unsatiable greed and you will not let any of it go until you are in the deaththroes of your pathetic over self absorbed lives!

We, the new generation are WHAT YOU HAVE MADE US! You paved the way, you are the example that we have witnessed, you are more to blame than any of us could ever be!

You begat this, this is all you and those of your ilk's doing, YOU CAN ONLY BLAME YOURSELVES!

This is OUR FREE NATION NOW, ALL OF OURS, TOGETHER; not your fantasy RESTRICTED NATION where your ego is relevant, because you and the antiquated folks like you no longer are relevant. Just go away already!

Shockey: Texans didn't 'give respect' to anthem

For the record, standing up, holding your hand over your heart and facing the flag in silence is required for anyone who is or ever has been in the service.

Standing up and facing the flag in silence is required for civilian Americans who respect their country.

I applaud Shockey's remarks 100%

Holding one's hand over their heart isn't required to show respect.  Removing one's hat and standing up and being silent are all that is required.

As far as your globalism commentary ... learn some history.  Then tell me how to make 6 BILLION people of differing cultures work as one.
