Growing up, Ben Roethlisberger was a huge Joe Montana fan. Late Monday night, after Pittsburgh was throttled by San Francisco thanks in part to Big Ben's four turnovers, he called himself "probably the best 49ers player tonight."

Realistically, that honor falls to either Aldon or Justin Smith, but we take your point, Ben.

As CBSSports.com's Clark Judge wrote early Tuesday morning, Roethlisberger was playing on a bad wheel. He suffered a high-ankle sprain against the Browns in Week 14 and he spent much of the week hobbling around in a walking boot. Still, Roethlisberger, who ended the evening 25 of 44 for 330 yards with three interceptions and a lost fumble, took responsibility for his performance.

“I’m not going to make excuses," he said, according to CBSSports.com Rapid Reporter Michael Erler. I played a bad football game, turned it over, and that’s on me. Everyone goes out and plays with injuries and I’m no different from anyone else. I was going to play even if I was five percent; I don’t care. …

"It’s very frustrating. You feel like you let down your team, your fans and your coaches. It’s tough. They’re a good football team, they flat out beat us and I need to be a lot better.”

The 49ers rode their top-ranked run defense once again to beat ailing quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-3 on Monday night.

Big Ben also said that he didn't take a pain-killing injection before the game even though high-ankle sprains can take several weeks to heal.

“We heard that [ESPN analyst] Steve Young and those guys said pregame, ‘Oh, he’ll go shoot it up,’ ” Roethlisberger said via FoxSports.com's Alex Marvez. “No, we don’t do that. [Steelers trainers] would never put me out there and endanger me or anybody on this team to do that. I just think it’s silly that they assume that’s what you’ve got to do. Obviously, we could have done that and it would have helped a lot. But that’s kind of crazy to do and take that chance because you can further injure yourself.”

Roethlisberger risked further injury when refused to come out of the game late in the fourth quarter with the outcome decided. Judge rightly wondered why the Steelers would potentially jeopardize the rest of their season.

"When coach tried to get me out, I said, 'No, I'm not putting you in that situation," Roethlisberger said. "And I'm not quitting on our guys. I started this thing. I'm going to finish it.' "

“My hat goes off to Roethlisberger,” 49ers defensive end Justin Smith said on ESPN after the game. “Him playing, hobbled up back there, he wouldn’t come out.”

So we again have confirmation: Roethlisberger is tough. Now he needs to get healthy because it looks like the Steelers are headed for the wild card and a first-round meeting with the Denver Broncos.

Big Ben: 'I was probably the best 49er tonight'

"When coach tried to get me out, I said, 'No, I'm not putting you in that situation," Roethlisberger said. "And I'm not quitting on our guys. I started this thing. I'm going to finish it.' "

Unfortunately, Big Ben put the team in a worst situation; making them play handicapped.  I personally don't understand him doing that, it's a selfish act, and not one that speaks well for the coaching, the management, nor for a healthier alternative.  Pittsburgh had 11 days to prepare Batch for this game. Although Batch is old and not as good, if you can't trust him to be there then he shouldn't be there. Period.

At the end of the day, Pittsburgh won 3 out of 4 games last year to start the season with Batch at the helm. That was a position Big Ben put them in and Batch bailed them out. Why not put the same trust this year until he gets healthy? One things almost sure: Pittsburgh has basically made the playoffs.  Continuing to play him before he's fully healed will guarantee another thing when the playoffs begin: same result as last night.   Somebody please ask Tomlin who the head coach is: him or Big Ben?

I can take him or leave him, but you have to give Roethlisberger credit for taking the heat, even though his offensive line stunk it up.  Also, he had no business being in that game.  Yes, players play hurt all the time but he was obviously limited.  They should have had Charlie Batch taking snaps all week with the first string, and let Roethlisbereger heal up.  Batch is more mobile than Rothlisberger anyway.  Bad move on Tomlin's part, that could also carry over into the play-offs.  The 49ers are just a hungrier football team, and though I think Harbaugh is an arrogant loudmouth, he has his team playing well enough to win it all.

Big Ben: 'I was probably the best 49er tonight'

A Pittsburg fan whining about another team getting all the calls is the ultimate "pot calling the kettle black". Unbelievable! I credited Steeler fans with more class than that.  Pittsburg had enough actual excuses for playing poorly on MNF (road game, hobbled Ben, and a missing Harrison) without inventing nonsense.  Hey B&G Posse, take your butt whoop'in like a man and stop whining.

Big Ben: 'I was probably the best 49er tonight'

Enough is enough... the Steelers lost because of 2 reasons.

1. Bruce Arians is horrible

2. The Refs favored the Niners - Goodell is invloved, since the Niners speared, hit heads and slapped helmets all with no calls. The Steelers have to play with different rules since Goodell is the devil.

Big Ben: 'I was probably the best 49er tonight'

Steelers lost because of a few factors: 1) The 49ers played relatively well; 2) Ben threw some horrible passes, and held the ball too long yet again, and fumbled; and, 3) The Steelers 'D' allowed too many long, time-consuming drives...were not good on third down.

Pittsburgh blew an opportunity to play the entire playoffs at home, which seems very important judging by their inability to play quality ball away from Heinz.

so you're saying the only reason the steelers loss is because ben didn't have his mobility? well simple solution for that. SIT HIM. Everyone knows he's a tough guy, no one is going to all of a sudden question that if he misses one game with a severe injury. Honestly, steelers did it to themselves by not sitting him out. No excuses from Steelers fans, you lost.

Big Ben: 'I was probably the best 49er tonight'

you kidding?? Ben gave them a win,the 49ers are not the better team here. The 49ers offense is too terrible to do anything in the playoffs. Steelers will probably be back in the Super Bowl. get some

Big Ben: 'I was probably the best 49er tonight'

You know what it's probably just as well. I think Pittsburgh people are getting tired of winning Super Bowls, having sb parties, and the big fun parades in the streets.......you know? Oh that's right, you don't know......unless you're from here! Sorry folks, I'm joking....the steelers will surely be making another trip this season. We will sit Ben and the big boys for a few weeks to let them heal up and then it's GAME ON!!!!! See you all in Indy feb. 5th!!!!!

Big Ben: 'I was probably the best 49er tonight'

Ben is a scrambling QB. he usually is very mobile, but an ankle injury is a killer. He is definatly a top10 QB. Charlie Batch is a good enough QB he should have played.

.........And if Patrick Willis would have played then then Steelers probably would have had 6 TO's and 0 points ......
