Growing up, Ben Roethlisberger was a huge Joe Montana fan. Late Monday night, after Pittsburgh was throttled by San Francisco thanks in part to Big Ben's four turnovers, he called himself "probably the best 49ers player tonight."

Realistically, that honor falls to either Aldon or Justin Smith, but we take your point, Ben.

As CBSSports.com's Clark Judge wrote early Tuesday morning, Roethlisberger was playing on a bad wheel. He suffered a high-ankle sprain against the Browns in Week 14 and he spent much of the week hobbling around in a walking boot. Still, Roethlisberger, who ended the evening 25 of 44 for 330 yards with three interceptions and a lost fumble, took responsibility for his performance.

“I’m not going to make excuses," he said, according to CBSSports.com Rapid Reporter Michael Erler. I played a bad football game, turned it over, and that’s on me. Everyone goes out and plays with injuries and I’m no different from anyone else. I was going to play even if I was five percent; I don’t care. …

"It’s very frustrating. You feel like you let down your team, your fans and your coaches. It’s tough. They’re a good football team, they flat out beat us and I need to be a lot better.”

The 49ers rode their top-ranked run defense once again to beat ailing quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-3 on Monday night.

Big Ben also said that he didn't take a pain-killing injection before the game even though high-ankle sprains can take several weeks to heal.

“We heard that [ESPN analyst] Steve Young and those guys said pregame, ‘Oh, he’ll go shoot it up,’ ” Roethlisberger said via FoxSports.com's Alex Marvez. “No, we don’t do that. [Steelers trainers] would never put me out there and endanger me or anybody on this team to do that. I just think it’s silly that they assume that’s what you’ve got to do. Obviously, we could have done that and it would have helped a lot. But that’s kind of crazy to do and take that chance because you can further injure yourself.”

Roethlisberger risked further injury when refused to come out of the game late in the fourth quarter with the outcome decided. Judge rightly wondered why the Steelers would potentially jeopardize the rest of their season.

"When coach tried to get me out, I said, 'No, I'm not putting you in that situation," Roethlisberger said. "And I'm not quitting on our guys. I started this thing. I'm going to finish it.' "

“My hat goes off to Roethlisberger,” 49ers defensive end Justin Smith said on ESPN after the game. “Him playing, hobbled up back there, he wouldn’t come out.”

So we again have confirmation: Roethlisberger is tough. Now he needs to get healthy because it looks like the Steelers are headed for the wild card and a first-round meeting with the Denver Broncos.

Big Ben: 'I was probably the best 49er tonight'

Stifling defense my *ss. Giving up 300+ yards is hardly stifling. The Steelers were their own worst enemy. I watched this game from beginning to end and seen nothing spectacular from the niners. They'll go no where in the playoffs. Crippled Steeler team and the niners could still fare no better than 20 points at home with all of the Steeler mistakes. Pathetic in my book.
49ers 20 Steelers 3, that's the only stat you need to know.  If the 49ers are pathetic, then what does that make the Steelers according to all the delusional Steelers fans out there?  Just admit you got beat by the better team.

Big Ben: 'I was probably the best 49er tonight'

It is hard for Big Ben to not be able to pay at full strength. He really is a tough guy. What helps him most at being a good quarterback is his size. HHow many times have we seen a little linebacker or safety hanging on his arm, and Big ben completes a pass for a first down. To these guys it must feel they they are an antelope trying to bring down a water buffalo. He also plays hurt. If he does not get better by the playoffs, doubtful if that backup can lead them to the promised land. Such are the trials and tribulations of an NFL  team as the playoffs draw near. The injury situatuion and people playing their best, and others playing over their head is what makes the playoffs interesting and exciting.

Big Ben: 'I was probably the best 49er tonight'

I never expect respect from NFL players, but this is just like when the Bears trashed Tebow. (I am not a huge Tebow fan, just making a point) Ben is simply saying that it was his mistakes that won the game for the 49ers, I disagree. Sometimes it is nice to see guys be hard, but to say that San Fran didn't work for that win is nonsense. This team is for real, they have been built for years and finally placed a coach in the situation that could use the tools around him. (Anyone who knows the sport can see that landing Harbaugh was very helpful, but did not make them who they are) Obviously his mistakes made an impact on the outcome and did help the 9ers, but  the defense had to play more than just those 3 plays. I expect no class from this guy, but it wasn't just his errors that made his team lose. All around though, between the delays and score (yes I know it was a defensive game) it wasn't much to watch either way.

Big Ben: 'I was probably the best 49er tonight'

you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.  The steelers would be the number one seed in the afc if they had won last night and the last two games of the season .... the ravens did lose to the chargers and the steelers have already beaten the pats.  Next time get the facts straight before you post such garbage

Big Ben: 'I was probably the best 49er tonight'

Ben is a gamer and Tomlin should have stepped up and taken Ben out of the game. That was a big game for both teams, but the long term benefits greatly out weigh last night's game. I could argue it was the best move to start him, but after the first couple of drives his performance wasnt there. I would have pulled him after the first quarter. I want to call out Max Starks for being abused at LT. I thought that the coaches would make adjustments move Health Miller to Starks side or keep a back in there to chip. Moving forward they are in the playoffs already, I want Tomlin to consider starting Batch or Dixon against two wekaer teams down the strecth. Did everyone forget what Batch did last year with Ben out? Also, Bruce Arians play calling drives me crazy. Now that the Steelers actually have deep threats at WR, it is RB dive or fly routes. Looking deep is great becasue you have to take your shots when the they are there. However, they were a much more complete offense when they mixed in shorter routes. I am sick of seeing 5 WRs and a empty backfield when it is 3rd and 4. Final thought: Give Ben some rest and have him ready for the playoffs. If they fall to the wildcard slot, then so be it. They have won from that positition before.

Big Ben: 'I was probably the best 49er tonight'

Coming from someone who has a Filthadelphia logo as their Avatar, doesn't speak much.  Your QB repeatedly killed and tortured dogs over and over.  Also, if the Steelers would have won last night, they would have simply had to win the final 2 games of the season to have home field advantage in the playoffs.  So last nights game was not meaningless.  Do you even follow football much? The Ravens lost to SD the night before, paving the way for the Steelers.  Your so called "dream team" is 6-8 this year.  How many Super Bowls have the Eagles won? Roethlisberger wasn't being cocky when he said he was the 49ers best player.  He was simply stating that he helped aid their victory, which he certainly did.  Vick misses games on a consistent basis because of broken ribs or a hang nail.  He is nowhere close to Big Ben's status.

Big Ben: 'I was probably the best 49er tonight'

Ben is a gamer, the problem was he was too hurt to go and be on top of his game.  But nobody  on the coaching staff had the balls to tell him he shouldnt be playing. A guy like Ben is always gonna want to play, coaches are there to do the right thing in the long run and for the team.  Steelers would have had a shot with Batch or Dixon

Big Ben: 'I was probably the best 49er tonight'

Just reaffirms why I hate Ben Roethlisberger so much other than he's a rapist.  He's so full of himself.  If he felt that after the game, he should have known pre-game that all he do is hurt the team.  And last  nights game was basically meaningless unless the Ravens faulter and the Steelers could have jumped over them for the number one seed.  Yeah Ben, what about playing against one of the toped ranked defenses in the league.  And by the way I am not a 49ers fan, I wish my Eagles could play half as good and consistant as the 49ers have this year.  I'm hoping to see the 49ers and Green Bay in the NFC Championship game.  As far as the Steelers go, hopefully they & Big Ben get knocked out in the first round.

Congrats on a great hard faught win Niners!
