Josh McCown to start for Bears on Christmas

Caleb Hanie had a good run (well, a run anyway), but it's all over now -- the Bears announced on Wednesday that Josh McCown will start on Sunday against Green Bay, per our Bears Rapid Reporter Gene Chamberlain.

It's been quite a while since McCown took starting snaps in an NFL game. December 23, 2007 to be exact, when, as Chamberlain notes, McCown went six of eight for 48 yards before leaving the game.

Since then, he's played in four NFL games (two with Carolina, one with Chicago), completing two of his eight attempted passes and throwing one interception.

In other words, things had to get really, really bad for the Bears to bail on Hanie and take a shot at McCown running the offense. And things did: Hanie completed an even 50.0 percent of his passes (51 of 102) for three touchdowns and nine picks this season and though he's been somewhat effective as a scrambler, it's pretty obvious he's not a capable starter in the NFL.

McCown probably isn't the "answer," per se, but the Bears are in a four-game losing skid since Jay Cutler suffered a broken thumb against San Diego. In those four games -- three of which were against the AFC West -- Chicago's been outscored 86-47. 21 of the points scored by their opponents came either on defensive touchdowns (two from the Seahawks) or via a Hail Mary (Tyler Palko to Dexter McCluster).

And the Bears limited the Raiders to six field goals (18 points) and a touchdown. It's not hard to imagine a world where, if they had a capable backup quarterback, they'd be in the playoffs.

So, um, Merry Christmas, Josh.

particularly if the Packers start resting players which they should.

Interesting.  I thought they would have been more worried about winning a game to secure home field advantage.  But apparently they should start resting guys.

This shouldn't be an issue if we had a good GM.  Instead we have another washed up QB.  Can anyone say Todd Collins.  I got a bad feeling about this one,

The first step in fixing the Bears is firing JA.  The reason they have absolutely no depth at any position is his annual failures in the Draft and refusal to address needs that are glaring to everyone but him. To Martz's credit he never liked Hanie and was begging JA to sign a veteran backup.  This team just threw away a season because they had an completely incapable backup.  All they needed was someone who could manage a game and they are in the playoffs.  Hanie will be out of the league after this season, so will McCown and Enderle won't be far behind.

As a Bears fan this falls into the category of who really gives a crap.  Hanie, McCown or Enderle couldn't beat the Packers if they only played with 10 on defense.  Hanie would still throw to the other team.  They have no chance of winning this game, Packers are going to be out for blood and looking to sew up home field advantage.

In all fairness to Hanie, having lost Forte, they had very few offensive weapons. McCown is not a long term answer and from what the Bears are doing they are accepting that Hanie will be gone as well.

The Bears still have a chance at the playoffs particularly if the Packers start resting players which they should. Given how the Packers don't defend the runnd let poor QBs throw all over the field, why not give Hanie - who can scramble a chance. Going to McCown is pretty much waving a white flag.

Exactly!

If Hanie can't finish the seaon he shouldn't have been on the roster! Peroid!

That decision falls on your GM who could have brought in McCown at the beginning of the season or 100 other more qualified people.

Seeing as this is Hanies 4th year he's likely gone since he failed (well, the organization FAILED!).

Doesn't say much for Enderle either why would you waste a draft pick on a clipboard holder?

Real signs of a poor GM!

The back up RB spot is juast as well.

Bell should be getting a lot more touches to develop him into a solid back up but only 39 carries! They are wasting their time & his.
He should have had 50 while Barber was on the mend. Also why would you sign Barber when he was not healthy??!
Roy Williams was another brilliant move! 27 catches. 27! Out of a veteran who already knows the system.

Then the best one yet. The Browns pathetic recieving corps signed a WR not even on anyones preseason roster & the Bears sign one of the Browns cuts. Haggerty, not even the Browns wanted him back.

I do believe I saw an article where the Bears GM is leaving. It can't happen soon enough! He's leaving a MESS!

The Bears have real problems & to think they would have made the playoffs or still have a chance.

Imagine if the right decisions were being made!

The playoffs wouldn't even be a question right now.

He needs to speak to Jim Harbaugh about doing this.

LMAO, Martz probably believes he would be a better HC in SF than Harbuagh.  That's how over-infated his ego is, forget about Matz taking any advice.

On the other hand, I would love to get Harbaugh coaching the Bears.  (Not that there's a prayer in the near future).

Heck, I'd love to see him strap it up and plya QB for the Bears on Sunday.  He'd be better than McCown.

Josh McCown to start for Bears on Christmas

You know that your season is over when you have to rely on Josh McCown to be your starting Qb. Bears are going to have an intersting off season coming up, they need to decide if they are going to give Forte his big money contract along with figuring out if Mike Martz is the answer at offensive coord.

Josh McCown to start for Bears on Christmas

I have 2 major problems on this situation'

1.  Why does a team go into a season with no decent backup QB?  We've seen the starter go down to many times to count!

2.  What is wrong with Martz' head as the OC?  Instead on using his complicated system with a virtual greenhorn, wouldn't it make sense to simplify the play selection to make it easier?   He needs to speak to Jim Harbaugh about doing this.
