On Thursday afternoon, Matt Barkley could give quarterback-needy teams at the top of the 2012 NFL Draft an early Christmas present. Or maybe he'll come sliding back down Lane Kiffin's chimney. Er, whatever -- he's announcing whether he'll return to USC or enter the NFL Draft on  Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. ET.

2012 NFL Draft

"USC junior QB Matt Barkley will hold a press conference this afternoon to announce his decision regarding next season," the Trojans announced from their official Twitter account.

Barkley is the second-best quarterback prospect on Rob Rang's Big Board, behind only Andrew Luck, and in the latest NFL Draft Scout mock drafts, both Rang and Dane Brugler have Barkley going to Washington at No. 7 overall. (Brugler has Robert Griffin, III, going ahead of Barkley to Cleveland.) As our Eye on College Football colleague Tom Fornelli points out, RG3 is reportedly chatting with agents and looks like a good bet to enter the draft.

The Redskins, along with the Colts, Browns and Dolphins all qualify as top-10 teams (currently) who have a serious need at quarterback or might have serious interest in acquiring one of the top-three signal callers in the draft.

Barkley's USC teammate and blind-side protector Matt Kalil also recently announced he would enter the NFL Draft and that surely has to play a part in the decision that the Trojan quarterback will make.

Matt Barkley to announce draft decision Thursday

They are actually bowl eligible next season.  That would be his only reason to stay, beside being a college campus celebrity.  With Kahlil entering the draft though, he's as good as gone.

Matt Barkley to announce draft decision Thursday

Matt Leinart will have that memory at South Bend for the rest of life.  He will be talked about by kids who are not even born.  There is no way to replicate that experience.  Jake Locker became a better quarterback in the extra year he spent in the Sarkisian system.  Remember, he had just recently converted to a drop-back passer from a run first passer.
Sure, Matt Barkley started against Ohio State as a freshman.  Yes, he is being talked about now, but his sophmore and junior years were stolen from him.  He received few accolades outside of Southern California.  When he WAS mentioned, it was always in the second tier, behind Andrew Luck.  Nobody noticed when he three for 400 yards or six touchdowns but when Stephen Garcia threw for 250 or Trent Richardson ran for 120 they were mentioned as Heisman candidates.  He did not even get invited to the banquest this year.
Yes, Matt Kallil is leaving.  However, the entire USC offensive line gave up seven sacks last year.  There is much more depth to the O line than in years past.  Thus, protection for Matt Barkley should be almost as good as it was last year.  Besides, doesnt EVERYBODY say that the only place that defense is played is in the SEC?
So maybe Matt Barkley has something to prove.  Not to USC fans but to the all those that disrespected his work and his team.  He is a good christian and is of service to his fellow man.  He does not need accolades, but it would be nice.  In the NFL, as a high draft pick he will have to wait a few years to create his legacy.  At USC, he can do that now.

Matt Barkley to announce draft decision Thursday

College is a once in a lifetime experience, opportunity to win NC in 2012, front runner for Heisman, but a major injury could kill his professional career, not an easy decision, but I say he stays. Too much fun in SoCal.

Matt Barkley to announce draft decision Thursday

As an SC fan I would obviously love for Barkley to finish out his 4 years..... Perhaps the possiblity of becoming a Redskin is enough to keep him away from the NFL for one more season...LOL

Luck will go #1, and as a Browns fan I dont want a QB in the draft Id rather get Blackmon WR OSU for McCoy since our guys suck. But if Barkley is still there when we pick he would be hard to pass up, I think he is just as good if not better than Luck and will be a great QB for years in the league. Locker and Ponder will probably struggle for a while and Gabbert too, I really dont even know why they were drafted where-as Barkley is a cant miss and its no secret that whoever drafts him will not get second guessed by anyone. I can see him doing what Daltons dong this year and thats impressive. I kinda hope he does come out because that may help keep teams from drafting our reciever...

With that said, if he does decalre if I am Indianapolis, I am looking a little further down the draft board and trying to get there to grab Barkley. This would be a good way to protect themselves, yet avoid a messy Manning seperation and possibly grab another top pick in the process. If Peyton is healthy next year, Barkley learns from one of the best, if not, then he would still be an upgrade over anything they have there this year.

Interesting, that is what I have been saying for some time.  Obviously we don't know if either Andrew Luck or Matt Barkley will be great or a bust but I have been saying for weeks that if Matt comes out I would trade down if I were the Colts.  I would be happy with either "on paper" but if some team has a hard on for Luck and wants to give me a 2nd rounder this year and next as well as a 3rd next to jump up and get Luck then take that deal.  Drop down in the 5-8 range, grab Barkley, let him sit a year or two like Canton said and use those picks to shore up that lousy D or O-line.  With all the hype surrounding Luck its almost as if he would need to start right away and the team that lands him will expect him to be like Cam and step in from day one, its not fair to Luck but when you are the #1 overall pick that is the way it is in the NFL.

Matt Barkley to announce draft decision Thursday

I think we all know that it would be logical if Barkley entered. What does USC have to offer him? They won't be going to a Bowl Game for the next 2 years.  Things will only get worse for him if he stays at USC.

It's going on 2012 not 2010, their two year ban is over my good man!  It would be a coup if he stayed, I think we all know he is as ready as he would be if he stayed another year but for the sake of SC fans, they really need to hope he stays especially since Matt Kalil and Nick Perry have already declared.  If he stays it would help that bridge be little shorter between SC losing scholarships due to the sanctions because losing 10 per year over the next 3 would be rough for any program.  I mean that in regard that they would benefit greatly and keep their head above water the next few years, having Matt Barkley back would certainly guarantee that and more in 2012.  During these next few years SC fans know they can’t afford too many early entrants or else they may actually lose to Notre Dame thrice in a row, (2012, 2013 and 2014) that folks, would be the biggest tragedy of all, ha!

This is news?

Matt Leinart - flame out
Mark Sanchez - mostly inconsistent, on the verge of flame out
John David Booty - did he even get his cup of coffee?
Carson Palmer - one great season; the rest - Orton-esque

Is there a list of more overrated NFL QBs from one school? Does anyone else see a pattern?

With the need for 1st round quarterbacks this year and his "blind dise" protection gone, it is my opinion he is as good as gone. His risk vs reward by returning favors him leaving by a landslide. Good question On3. I would have to assume with the success of this year's class, combined with the affordability of rookie contracts we'll see it again. However there will probably be a team or 2 that drafts a QB to sit and learn, much like Tennessee did with Locker. I would love to see that with RG3 on a team where he's not thrust into the lineup early and then get beat up for the next 2 years, something like could be a huge detriment to his development.
