Casserly: Saints to tag Brees without new deal

Drew Brees and the Saints decided to put any long-term contract talks on hold until after the 2011 season, but that doesn't mean a new deal for Brees isn't still kicking it as the large, pink elephant in the corner of the room.

On Sunday, CBS Sports Charley Casserly reported that the two sides are still working on a deal, but if they can't reach one before free agency begins, the Saints will place the franchise tag on Brees, and that Brees will probably not report if/when that happens.

"He's a free agent at the end of this year and both sides would like to get a long-term deal done," Casserly reported on The NFL Today. "The Saints told me if one is not done by the start of free agency, they'll franchise him. I estimate that number will be between $14-15 million. The target for Brees? The Peyton Manning contract -- $18 million a year, but more importantly, $23.4 million over the first three years.

"If a long-term deal is not done, I would not be surprised if Brees does not show up for offseason and even training camp."

Brees, as we've previously noted, probably would've slotted somewhere between Manning/Tom Brady and Michael Vick when it comes to a long-term deal and the amount he'd make annually. That's if, of course, the Saints were negotiating with Brees before this season.

Instead New Orleans will now be trading numbers with Brees' agent Tom Condon as Brees comes off a season in which he broke Dan Marino's record for most passing yards in a single season (he's just 300-some yards shy).

That stands to make things expensive for the Saints, and if the team goes deep into the postseason this year, things won't get any cheaper. And it won't exactly the public relations nightmare they deal with if Brees holds out any easier either.

Casserly: Saints to tag Brees without new deal

Brees is a phony. Look at the lockout, he gets his team together to workout. And that's fine, but it should have been closed. No, not for Drew. He had to have the media there to record his benevolence. Brees is all about the team. No he's not. He wants to be the highest paid QB in football. And if he gets that, the team will have to release a few players it doesn't want too. Yeah, Drew is going to break Marino's yardage record. Big deal, he throws pactically every down. Take a look at his yards per pass. It's a full yard and a half less than Rodgers. Look at his percentage of completions over 20 yards. Rodgers is at 63%. I'm not exactly sure where Brees is, but the next 3 QB's had percentages of 54, 48 and 42. So he's at least 21% behind Rodgers. Brees completes 71% of his passes. That's very good, but if all you are doing is throwing the ball 5-8 yards downfield, you should be completing 71%.
Do I think that Brees is a bad QB? Of course not, he's very, very good. I'm just of the opinion, that people don't look at ALL the numbers. They see the yards and the completion %. They don't look deeper.

hey whitebread how exactly was brees going to close the practice to the media. He didn't own the facility, it was on tulane's campus. By the way he also paid out of his own pocket to use the field and for the equipment needed I don't know what you think is phony about that. You are correct about the different offinsive styles between Marino and Brees, but how many teams have been running the west coast system since Bill Walsh and Joe Montana introduced it to the NFL .No one has come close to the record othe than Brees and now also Brady. As far as the Saints passing on every down check your facts they have one of the better run offensses in the league.

Remember what the Saints were before Brees?  You better.....  Drew deserves to be paid like Manning and he will get it.  San Diego made the mistake of letting him go and if New Orleans does the same, they are an average (8-8) team.

I don't see why they wouldn't just pay him. Why is there even a negotiation? Just give him the Peyton Manning contract, maybe a little more, and just move on. Seriously what would you want to save that money for on the cap? Who else on that roster is irreplaceable exactly?

Like most I agree it wont get that far as Brees is a player who enjoys the off season workouts and training camps, hes a football perfectionist.  He will be there and this will get done

There's no way the Saints go that far;Drew Brees deserves to be paid like Brady, Rodgers, & much more than Michael Vick.If the Saints don't pay him properly, there are plenty of teams that will.

This is a non-story.  No way the Saints don't pay him and no way he sits out of camp.  Find something else to write about.
